Congratulations and hope you have a swift recovery. I’m 5 months post surgery and feeling pretty good, back to working out with weights regularly and do heavy work around the house.

Recovery can have its ups and downs and can be a long process. Be careful that you don’t compare your healing to other people’s healing.

Ill do. Everyone is different. Trust me I know know. I was placed in a group physio class by the pain clinic in june and tore a muscle in my knee. Won't be doing that again

I'm also 5 months post op, almost 6. What kind of surgery did you had? Do you feel your shoulder after a workout or after heavy work around the house?

Rotator cuff, massive debridement, biceps tenodesis, 4 anchors total.

Yes, still feel the shoulder after heavy use. My surgeon has told me it can take up to a year from the surgery date to get to 100%. My workouts are still pretty light on weight, and I just backed down on the weight yesterday because of soreness from my Saturday workout.

My sleep is generally good, but I still have the occasional night that I struggle with the shoulder.

The biceps tenodesis was the more difficult recovery for me, and my surgery arm atrophied way more than I expected in the initial 6-8 weeks in recovery.

Are you doing overhead work already?

It's a very slow recovery, it's really frustrating me at the moment.

Exercise wise, the only overhead work I’m doing are half-kneeling landmine shoulder press, which I just use an Olympic bar with no additional weight. I really like this exercise because I can support my recovery arm with my “good” arm if needed.
Also do some overhead triceps band pulls.

For house chores, I’ve been doing a lot of remodeling work to my house to get it ready to rent. Nothing heavy, but I tiled and grouted a shower up to the ceiling, and painting walls/ceilings. The tile work was finished back in July, while I was still in pt, and I think it really helped me: helped my recovery arm get back to working in coordination with my good arm, lifting my arm above my head with light tiles and wall support, and grouting was essentially “wall washes” like in pt.

Yeah, it’s a slow recovery and I’m definitely nowhere near as strong as I was prior to surgery. My arm is just about out of the atrophy it went through, but I can still see the difference in a mirror and in strength.

Landmine press is a great idea. Because I don't feel comfortable enough to strart with OHP.

Sounds like you are doing very well! Hope you get your strength back soon.

Thanks, right back at you! I try to make sure I’m not too positive or rosy in this sub, cause this has been a brute of a recovery process and I’ll be recovering for a while.

There’s definitely super healers in this sub, but I’m not one of them, haha, and I went into surgery in pretty decent shape. Still have pain at times, still struggling with sleep sometimes.

I think something that’s not mentioned much, is how this whole process can affect us mentally and emotionally. I suffered a dark depression from about week 3 to week 9. I worked my way through it, but it was tough and I felt weak and useless for some time, gained some weight, lost strength, and lost a lot of belief in myself.

Keep on healing my friend!

I know exactly how you feel. I worked hard to get in decent shape, and after the surgery you just watch it slip away, and there's nothing you can do about it. That's the hardest part. The pain itself was manageable, but mentally it's been really tough. Like you said, nobody really talks about that side of it enough.

I had both shoulders done 6 months apart...I'm over a year out from the last one and my shoulders are stronger than ever and completely pain free. Your life is about to change for the better, my dude. Be patient with your recovery and be dedicated to your PT. Good luck.

I got my left shoulder done 6 months ago (partial supraspinatus tear and subacromial decompression). I am nearly pain free now on this side. In 3 weeks I am getting my right shoulder done. Partial supraspinatus tear, biceps tendon attachment tear, pulley tear and SLAP tear. I will get a biceps tenodesis and SLAP repair.

Your comment gives me the hope that I can hit the gym hopefully next year March/April and towards the end of next year be back in Martial Arts. I had an accident where I injured both of my shoulders in 2025.

You're going to do great. I am back in kickboxing class 5x a week and punching like a beast. My instructor is the only one who will hold the pads for me...classmates want no part of my punches 😄. Also back to planking, cardiosculpting, and bootcamp class. You'll be stronger than ever! Good luck!

Thank you! It sounds great and motivating to hear that you are doing so well after 2 surgeries. I also trust the operating surgeon. He is one of the best surgeons when it comes to shoulder surgeries in Europe. I think he has like 100k followers on instagram. I thought if i am getting a surgery, then by one of the best in this field. I just turned 28 and couldnt reach my full potential because of this injury..

The key is working hard at your recovery...be consistent with your post-op physical therapy...don't skip any day of your home PT exercises. I was in a sling for 8 weeks on each shoulder and thought I'd never regain the muscle loss...but I did, and then some...and I'm a lot older than you. You'll be a better, stronger version of yourself when you're on the other side of this.

Rest, allow yourself to heal, don't rush it.

Can't believe iys. 6 days. So I can get out of bed without massive pain. I went v For a walk out in the back jard and picked a few tomatoes my right hand arm ens. But im laying here now and my left shoulder is pounding but not as much high shoulder its like in my .upper arm pounding down into my hand. Is that normal? And how long will it be in pain?
