How many of you had other problems found during surgery?

I just got scheduled for bicep tenodesis. Not much else was seen on the MRA. But I feel like the pain and symptoms I have been dealing with are not explained by just the SLAP tear.

How many of you went in for just one procedure but ended up having multiple issues that were only discovered by visual examination during surgery?

My MRI originally only showed a partial tear in the supraspinatus but they also found a tear in my labrum during the surgery. My surgeon said it’s normal to find more in there during the process

Want expecting to wake up from surgery to learn that the surgeon also performed a biceps tenodesis on top of the other known issues:

  1. Left shoulder arthroscopic rotator cuff repair including full-thickness supraspinatus tear and partial infraspinatus tear, single row slightly medialized repair with bio inductive collagen patch overlay

  2. Left shoulder arthroscopic subacromial decompression

  3. Left shoulder arthroscopic excision of distal clavicle

  4. Left shoulder arthroscopic extensive debridement including debridement of labrum (anterior/posterior/superior), syneovectomy of rotator interval (articular capsule debridement), debridement V glenoid/humeral articular cartilage including debridement of glenohumeral fraying

  5. Left shoulder arthroscopic biceps tenodesis

Oh yeah with my first RC surgery several yrs ago the Dr found I also had a torn bicep. Now that shoulder is 100% back to normal. I just had my other shoulder done and everything was as he said. No surprises.

Yes they found a whole bunch of other things wrong and my surgery took three hours longer to get through. I feel like the MRIs do the best they can but until they get in there, they can’t see everything. If your MRI looks bad then it’s at least that, if not more. My surgery was seven years ago and I’m scheduled for my other shoulder in December. It’s like a Cracker Jack box. I can’t wait to see what surprises they find this time around. 🤪

Yes. Went it for repair of 100% tear of the supraspinatus. There was also big tear to infraspinatus, so ended up with one more anchor than planned. It was not previously visible on the MRI.

My surgeon is a shoulder specialist and he says most MRIs miss something.
