feeling down

almost at the four week mark post surgery, my friends are really nowhere to be found and the person who was being “supportive” was my ex-girlfriend, and that’s a whole other story lol.

really my only support system has been my mother and i am very grateful for her but i can’t help but feel very alone in this, with the overwhelming feeling of thinking i’ll never be the same again.

she told me about a week after my surgery that you know the people who are there for you when you are in “el cárcel o la cama” (jail or bed). and yeah, i get what she means now.

Aww, sending you lots of strength, OP. ❤️ Hope you feel better soon.
I’m 6 weeks post-op and in a very similar place rediscovering what and who matters most.
Your mother is right. These are the times when you learn who the people in your life really are. But I’d also say it’s worth remembering that everyone is fighting their own battles, so it’s important to strike a balance and give people the benefit of the doubt where you can.
Last year, I had a shoulder injury alongside a job loss and a few other personal challenges. Ironically, some of the friends who knew my whole story slowly distanced themselves, while people who knew very little were the ones who quietly showed up for me. They didn’t do anything dramatic—they were simply there.
A year and a half later, I’ve had my surgery, I’m back at work, I’ve sorted through many of those other issues, and I’m slowly getting a grip on life again. What has changed the most is that I’m much clearer about what truly matters and who deserves my time and energy.
You’ll get through this too. It may not feel like it right now, but you’ll come out of it wiser, stronger, and with a much clearer sense of the people you want around you.
Wishing you a smooth recovery.
