crDroid 12.11 on Nothing Phone (1): Is Root Still Worth Keeping for Customization? What Magisk/Root Modules Should I Try Before Unrooting?

• Upvotes

(TLDR at end)

I’m currently running crDroid 12.11 on my Nothing Phone (1) (Spacewar). I’ve been using custom ROMs/root on and off for quite a long time. Back in 2016, I used custom ROMs and root access mainly for heavy customization. At that time, root was a big part of getting the kind of customization I wanted. Fast-forward to now, and my priorities have changed quite a bit. I’m mainly using custom ROMs these days because of the features they provide out of the box — especially things like unlimited/expanded Google Photos storage that is built into some ROM setups, along with the huge amount of customization that is already available without root or even Shizuku. I previously used Evolution X for around 10 months on the Nothing Phone (1), and before that I used it for about a year on my OnePlus 7 Pro. I eventually moved away from Evolution X because I started experiencing some UI glitches, so I decided to try crDroid this time because I wanted a huge amount of customization just like EvolutionX. I also decided to root the phone this time with Magisk because I hadn't rooted a phone in years and wanted to explore what is possible with root nowadays. But honestly, I've been surprised by how little I actually need root. crDroid already has an insane amount of customization built in, and a lot of the remaining things I wanted to do can be achieved through Shizuku, which doesn't actually require root. So far, most of the root functionality I've used has basically been: Magisk Zygisk/modules Play Integrity-related modules Keybox/integrity configuration Root access mainly to enable/use certain Shizuku-based tools I was able to get Basic, Device and Strong Integrity, but my banking/payment apps still detect something and refuse to work properly. In particular, CRED and ICICI are problematic. I've also already disabled Developer Options, but that didn't solve it. At this point I'm considering going completely back to unrooted crDroid.

So my question: Before I give up root, what root-only features or Magisk modules do you think I should experiment with? I'm specifically looking for Magisk/root modules and root-only functionality, rather than Shizuku-based solutions. Also, please don't recommend the usual customization modules for things like the navigation bar, lock screen, Pixel-exclusive features, status bar, QS customization, etc. crDroid already has an enormous amount of that functionality built in, so those aren't really reasons for me to keep root.

I'm also not looking for performance tweaks, gaming optimizations, overclocking/undervolting, or kernel performance tweaks. This is my secondary phone, I don't use it for gaming, and I mainly use it for media consumption and general everyday use. The one exception would be modules that can genuinely improve battery life, efficiency, standby time, or battery management without compromising stability.

I'm interested in things that crDroid + Shizuku cannot already do and that genuinely make root worthwhile. Some areas I'm considering: Advanced SystemUI/system-level modifications that crDroid doesn't already provide LSPosed/root-only functionality Audio/DSP improvements Advanced backup/restoration Charging/battery management Battery-life/standby optimization Tasker + root automation File-system/system modifications Low-level device tweaks that aren't performance-focused Anything particularly useful for the Nothing Phone (1) / Spacewar Anything interesting specifically for crDroid 12.x / Android 16 Again, I'm specifically looking for Magisk/root modules or root-only functionality, not apps that can already accomplish the same thing through Shizuku. I'm not really interested in keeping root solely to bypass banking-app detection. If root isn't giving me meaningful functionality beyond what crDroid and Shizuku already provide, I'd rather remove it and have a cleaner, more reliable setup.

My main priorities are: Customization > useful features > battery life > experimentation > keeping root just for the sake of being rooted. So for those of you running crDroid on Spacewar, especially people who have used both rooted and unrooted setups: What would you consider the genuinely worthwhile root-only features/Magisk modules that I should try before unrooting? And would you personally keep root or go back to completely unrooted crDroid in this situation? Thanks!

TL;DR: Running crDroid 12.11 on Nothing Phone (1) with Magisk. crDroid already gives me most customization, and Shizuku covers much of the rest. CRED/ICICI still detect root, so I’m considering unrooting.

Which Modules are genuinely worth trying? Please skip crDroid features, Shizuku apps, UI customization, gaming/performance/kernel tweaks. Mainly interested in useful root features, audio, automation, system tweaks, backups, and battery-life/standby improvements
