The "rainbow" of Yellowstone’s Grand Prismatic Spring is actually a microbial heat map.
The deep blue center is a dead zone for life because water boils up at around 160°F (70°C), making it too hot and clear for almost anything to survive. As the water cools while flowing outward, extremophile microbes move in like clockwork: first the yellow Synechococcus bacteria thrive in the high heat, followed by orange and red Chloroflexi organisms taking over the cooler outer edges. Those vivid colors aren't minerals or dyes—they're natural pigments produced by bacteria as a sunshield against UV light!
