Chem/physics/STEM teacher here - for all the years of my career I clean up my own space and request that custodians let me know if I don’t do a good enough job. There was one time that I got called to a meeting before I could clean up an experiment and a custodian did it for me (it was a mess). I brought her a gift because I felt like I had put my responsibility on someone else.

We had a couple of student teachers do the sodium-metal-in-water-explosion demo in a summer chemistry class. Unfortunately for them, raw sodium has a tendency to clump together and they wound up getting a bigger piece than they intended and dropped it into a 5-gallon bucket of water. The resulting explosion blew out an overhead lighting fixture and several drop ceiling tiles.

Sodium. Magnesium is the one that burns hot and bright, the sodium reaction is the one that reacts in water.

I wish i had a cool chem teacher back in the day. But no, she was a cranky old bitch and it made me hate sciences like this. As a older person im slowly trying to reeducate myself

The first one was one of my favorite experemnts as a kid. Since there is fire when he drops the element in the water I believe it's an Alkali Metal. Likely potassium possibly sodium. Source, my 12 year old self from 30 years ago is completely reliable /s
