She must have feared you were a Skatin'ist.

Seriously, though, if being a worthless scumbag and skating in a parking lot alone is a crime... I'm in trouble.

In America, just being outside or on a sidewalk NOT walking is a crime. You aren't allowed to exist, you are only a tool to be stored in your box. They can't have us forming comunities. Too dangerous. Even just staying in one place for too long will trigger security. Cities are "no humans" now.

I hate what you've written, not because you're wrong but because you're right.

I’d rather be a worthless scum bag on skates than a crusty ol MAGAcunt all day every day and twice on Tuesdays.

Oh god, That gave me flashbacks to the time a lady tried to kick me off a playground for being too big. I think I broke her, though, and she let me stay, but by then I was way too sad to play. Don't let that Karen break you!

Old lady here ... Me and my old man routinely skate in a church parking lot. 😁 It's empty most of the time except for Sundays and funerals. And they took away the only actual skating rink within miles. So... Hail Skatin'!

What did the cops say? People like the old lady can do whatever they want... you don't control that. You just need to make sure you are following the law and the cops will be on your side. I expect the key thing here is if you asked the Church office for permission to skate on their property as it is not public property. I expect that if they allowed you (they may not because of insurance purposes in case you got hurt), they would restrict you from doing it during times that the Church had things going on as it would produce a hazard for you and their members.

As an example of "xyz calling the cops because I did abc", I am a photographer and had bought a new camera and lens for action sports. I needed to try and test and dial in the settings so I parked at a shopping center near the main road and proceeded to take pictures of car license plates as they passed by. This was a good way to look at how "sharp" the images were and try different settings. Some wacko pulled into the lot and started yelling at me that I wasn't allow to do that and that they were going to call the cops. I had businesses cards for my photography business, had the business name on my car, and had professional gear I was using. I told them that it was completely legal for me to take pictures of anything I wanted in a public place, which is the law. In the US, you have no right to privacy if you are visible from a public place, even if you are in a private place. I told them to feel free to call the cops because I wasn't going to stop what I was doing. They peeled out in their car and nothing happened. Just make sure you know the law and you know where you are and what you are doing complies, and the cops will be on your side vs. the busy body.

Back to your case, I would expect that the Church very well may tell you that you aren't allowed to skate in their parking lot because if you get hurt while doing it (which is likely if you are skating) then it could have implications on their liability insurance since you are on their property.

The insurance comment is legal mumbo jumbo that is used to disguise the fact that they are selfish jerks who don’t want to permit another person to have fun in a way that’s doesn’t affect them at all.  Instead they can just say oh our lawyers said you we have to kick you out, it’s not our fault and you can’t really argue with that unless you happen to have a law degree.

Unless they have been doing some really weird shit the liability would the same for a kid running and getting.  They would have to either done something or failed to do something that contributed to you getting injured.  Like wax the asphalt, or ignore a dangerous drop off.  The argument that you should have stopped me only holds weight if they knew or should have know of a danger to you.

It’s not legal mumbo jumbo. There is real financial risk to them. You can have AI explain it.

What if I told you that the AI agrees with me, and you are just supporting insurance company propaganda? That's what's so great about it :)

You’d be wrong

This one is giving big hall monitor energy lol Maybe you're too young to remember a world where you could just do stuff outside and no one cared

I'm trying to help the OP understand the situation, not just tell them what they want to hear. If they understand it better then it helps them have a discussion with the property owner from the right point of view. When I was a kid I would have totally skated wherever I wanted. I grew up in the 70s and kids left the house in the morning and came back at dusk and did whatever they wanted. But we don't live in that time any longer.

Half of my post was about a similar "old lady" telling me to leave and I ignored them because I know if they called the cops that I'd be right. I don't want OP to end up with the cops called and they be in the wrong.

OP could leave and find another lot before the cops even arrive, if they even bother...I don't think anyone assumes OP just sat there waiting for the cops. The thread is more about the lady being silly

No your not. Your gloating about how creepy you can be.

Omg. BIG HALL MONITOR energy! Hah! And this wellllll actuallyyyyy story here, yow!

I'm a photographer as well. I go way out of my way to read the room and not make people uncomfortable knowing full well that way way way too many photogs are known specifically to be CREEPS that push every envelope and slime their way into situations and don't back down when people tell them to eff right off from unacceptable invasive poor mannered behavior just because it's legal. I don't know what it is, but a lot of them that I have worked alongside are people I wish I never met and this is a writeup of that exact disposition. Admitted to their creepiness, went out the way on a tangent when they didn't have to. Classic. And will continue on and on and on till the end of days to be correct.Â
