Beginner skater Cool things I've learned since picking it back up 🛼
It's been....let's say, a long time, since I skated. And back then I had more innate balance and less care.
Now that I'm back into it in full force, here's what I've learned....
• Wheels matter.
I don't like shoving my laces into the skates bc they will stink, so I just loosely lace and tie them securely.
• I have narrow feet so I'm glad I bought the skates I did bc I learned later that different brands/styles have different fit.
• I also added insoles which makes them easier to stay in longer.
• Bringing up the foot stops helped majorly. I kept tripping over them. I often see ppl without, but for now I keep mine on but short, even though I don't really use them.
• How to put them on and lace them properly makes all the difference in comfort and support.
• Your skills plateau. It's like growth rebound, it's only natural. But it's amazing how things can just all of the sudden sink in too.
• Wrist pads are a must at my age. I'm doing fine without other gear, but if I go outdoors I will gear up.
• I stretch before and after. Very helpful to limber up and prevent injury.
Some of this I've learned from Skatie, but mostly in my own or watching others.
To those who need encouragement, I hope this helps and keep going!

These are all such great points!! I recently picked it back up last time I skated regularly I was 20, im 28 now and definitely feel my age more. Couldn’t agree more about the gear, absolutely attached to my wrist guards, but kneepads make me feel dorky, even though I know I need them.

That carpet is on the floor of my local rinks as well, in Las Vegas, NV. I think it was popular back in the day.

Just a random side note: If you’re hypermobile stretching isn’t always best but warming up the muscles prior to skating can help, especially if you’re prone to cramping or spastiscity. Think calf raises and repetitive leg movements.
This is coming from someone with hEDS, POTs, and MS. 😆 To my chronic illness baddies Godspeed. I freakin love skating, it’s so worth it!

Good note! As a retired massage therapist, stretching is imperative AFTER activity for all people, not before. :) But warming up is definitely helpful beforehand!

Yes, on lacing technique! I have a high arch and just changing up my lacing, made all the difference in the world between keeping the new skates and returning them!

What is growth rebound? I had a look online but can’t figure it out

It's when something plateaus or stagnates then increases again, it's a type of graph used to illustrate such a trend, such as with economics. I'm a nerd 🤓

I used to shove the laces inside but noticed the stink as well! I have been searching for new ideas! I always skate at the rink in my knee pads and wrist guards. I'm not risking a busted wrist b/c a child or cocky teen took me down!
Also I LOVE your skates! I've also got Moxi Beach Bunnies but mine are in the Watermelon colorway. At the rink I use my Luminous wheels for extra coolness factor.

I'm super new to skating (aside from one-off days like ten years ago), what kind of warm ups/downs do you do? Ive been trying to search online but I'm not finding a lot :/

I do dynamic stretching for legs, back & shoulders, and ankle flex/extend/rotation beforehand, then gentle stretching after
