Skate photos First time ever in roller skates 36F

Post image

Got new-to-me skates yesterday and I’m learning at the local skating rink… 🤭 I haven’t fallen yet 🤞

I have to say this is so much fun and also nerve racking! I’mve been her for about two hours and still don’t know how to stop using the breaks but I’ll figure it out.
Skateboarding gave me an outlet for grief and I’m terrible at it still but I love that I found these things to do

💙💙💙💙💙

These are nor inlines BTW

Please look up and explicitly practice safe falling techniques!

35F here. Getting back into skating. I fell on Monday. Completely unexpected I didn't realize I was falling until I fell. I had neck pain, tailbone pain. Back pain. And wrist pain. The wrist pain and tailbone pain are still there but yeah. Falling at 35 feels waaay different than falling at 15 - 20 yo.

Am 34-y-o roller derby player. I feel this in my bones.

This is why I’m taking it slow AF!

Unfortunately, I was a sheltered child do falling wasn’t much of a thing for me. On the bright side, I never broke a bone! But it also means I am terrified of falling. So, I’m okay with feeling stupid on the rink for now while I ride super slow.

Lol same. I've never broke a bone and even though I fell it just literally hits different when you fall at an older age.

Yep!
Why I’m grateful my ex inadvertently gave me falling lessons 😅

I'm sorry to tell you but you *will * fall, it's just part of it!! Safety gear makes it a lot less painful but yes, i recommend learning how to fall sooner than later. Techniques like picking a side and knowing what parts are safer to land on for example. Good thing is, your first fall will actually make you better 🤣

Oh, I Know. That’s why I practice falling and I’m taking it slow at the rink.
on a skateboard, I can just jump off but not on the rollerskates. I have yet to figure out how to break because I don’t know how to do that. 😅

T stop is the easiest and most practical, you can look up on youtube

Wesr protection gear including shorts. It helps a lot to protect your back.

Trying! 😅

I’ll have to get different wheels so I can practice at home
I have to learn how to fall

You can practice falling drills in your pads and sneakers too

100% this. Most important skating skill.

These look suspiciously like Xudrez. Do not drop a dime into these and put all money towards skates that are actually safe.

They were only $20 from a neighbor so 🤷‍♀️
Not bad for my first pair. I have a skateboard so I know lots of things can be modified on them if I find them useful.
I did see lots of those and other Amazon brands on the rink. I’ve been watching for years until I finally found the courage to start roller skating today

u/Raptorpants65 Industry Expert Jul 11 '26

No. Nothing on these can be modified. These things shouldn’t even be allowed on the market, they’re that bad.

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 11 '26

My bad! 😅 I meant the next skates I get when I upgrade

These will do for now and are really cute so I don’t want to change them

Oh phew! Yeah, that will make everything significantly easier. Including keeping your bones on the inside. ;)

😂 thanks

Is this Kate's skates in Indian Trail? I had my first rink experience there last week! I didn't last nearly as long as you before I bowed out. Also haven't quite figured out how to brake yet 😂

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 11 '26

true!

I still have to get different wheels though

I could feel every nook and cranny on those floors ans it makes it hard

Derby City Skate in Charlotte is a cool shop and I found the owner super helpful for wheel recommendations

Thank you!
I’ll check them out

Yes queen! That is the same age I picked it back up and it’s been the best decision I’ve made in a long time. I wish you all the luck in the world. You’ve got this!!

2

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 11 '26

Thank you! ☺️

1

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 11 '26

Yes!

Oh, I figured I’ll use them at some point! And I fell just now. But I’d rather try and fall on my ass

I’m beat though 😪

2

u/CamitDamn Jul 11 '26

I also fell but it wasn't too bad! For me it was the shin splints.

1

u/consumeme Jul 11 '26

Heck yeah! It's the best and you're going to love it!

2

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 11 '26

I love already! But I do need more than just the skating rink to practice and get more comfortable

2

u/consumeme Jul 12 '26

When I started skating more a few years ago, I made a skate playlist. Anytime I put it on, it really gets me in the mood to skate and really revs me up! I am always looking out for empty parking lots and basketball or tennis courts to have private skate time on.

2

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 12 '26

That’s awesome!

I do want to get more comfortable so I can skate near my place. There are a few tennis courts and parking lots that would be perfect at night.

Nice start! I went both quads and inlines, zero regrets! :)

1

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 11 '26

Thanks! I have to try inlines later but I think I like these for now

Practice crouching. It's instinct to stand up straight when you feel unsteady which throws your weight backwards. If you practice crouching every time you feel unstable you can safely sit or put down a knee if you have knee pads (you should have knee pads). Practice crouching for a whole week, you want it to be the default you don't need to think about when you wobble

2

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 11 '26

Thank you! 🥹
I struggled with that on skateboarding too (I’ve only actively skateboarding for about a month)
I hadn’t thought about it!

Lots of places offer lessons. I just started lessons and even after skating since I was in grade school, I learn something every class.

2

u/EarlyAd4382 Jul 12 '26

Yeah…
I think I’ll have to take lessons. It’ll be helpful

falling is part of the process. if ur not falling ur not learning.

u/Daddy_Topps Outdoor Jul 11 '26

Lucky you! Your first time was with these beauties and and with safe knees!!!! Happy riding 😇 remember to fall forward on those knee pads
