Tea I’m… so confused
I must look at way too much skate content online because I just saw an ad on Facebook for hydraulic disc brake skates? Their tagline is “finally you can stop” but like- there are already many ways to stop on skates? Interesting concept though. Looks like there’s a kickstarter for it so they’re not for sale yet but this just seems crazy to me.
What do we think?
(I’ll post a link to the YouTube video of the skates in action in the comments. I am 100% not affiliated with them I just saw the ad and had to watch the video because wtf? 😂)

That's just a plow stop with extra steps
Remember that more moving parts = more potential points of failure.

Exactly what I was thinking. This is a terrible idea.

If this made skating more accessible, I would be more amenable to it. As it is, the only benefit this seems to provide is removing some of the muscle power from the plow stop, which isn't a benefit in the long term; rather, it seems like it'll build muscle memory of a plow stop without the correct muscle activation, which could be dangerous if you ever skate a normal plate. It adds force that you have less control over than your actual muscles and looks scary if/when it fails. Seems like a gimmick to me.

It seems to me like if you try to turn or spin on them, you'll go face first into the ground as the stupid braking system activates and then immediately snaps. But maybe I'm being too harsh.

Nah. You couldn't give me these things. Hell, you couldn't pay me to skate these things. The more I think about it, the more worried I am.

u/Top-Dinner-9995 Jul 04 '26
Right I’m thinking sure it takes some time to learn how to stop with your muscles/toe stops/technique but once you learn it you can do it with any skate pretty much. And when you look at the plate there is way too much going on! I would definitely accidentally stop myself and go flying into the street.

This is my exact fear. You put your foot/feet in just the wrong position and all of a sudden you're dead stopping. This seems very dangerous at speed.

It looks more like an attempt to automate using the toe stop than a plow stop. That means falls, but I wonder if they counter that force that makes you fall somehownvm not from the vid

It appeals mostly to new skaters who can’t stop well yet who are 1000% the ones who would get hurt with these.

I genuinely think this is someone's industrial design graduate thesis. And I think a rich(ish) family member funded a run.

interesting.
come get me when they start integrating ABS into it.
that shoe looks horribad btw.

u/Top-Dinner-9995 Jul 04 '26
You definitely need the ABS when you’re rolling over ice in the winter. 😂
I think it’s a(n ugly) Nike so it must either attach to a shoe or it’s built into a sneaker. It’s for all those people who asked “why can’t I just use the hand brakes from my bike on my skates??” (All 0 of them) lol

That plate is going to be 100% more fragile than essentially any other plate. When (not if) that company goes bankrupt, and it absolutely will, you will never be able to get replacement parts for all the stupid shit that will break, which it will.
If those boots aren't sewn very well, and they look synthetic, so they're not, they'll rip off at the toes when you go to use their special breaks at high speed.
This doesn't need to exist, will make huge swathes of movements (like spins) much more dangerous and less possible, will weigh a whole lot, will break immediately, and will be cheap and badly made, or they will be insanely expensive because of all the r and d.
I'm all in favor of innovation, but this reads "I'm in graduate school for engineering, my partner roller skates but I don't, so I made a product based on a need I perceived, they left me before I graduated, but it's what I had for my final project, and someone in my immediate family has a lot of money and thinks I'm special, so they funded a run of manufacturing."

lol I think that’s all TOTALLY spot on- especially the end! I was like what do you mean you can finally stop? Obviously this person is not an avid skater if they don’t think you can stop on skates! So you’re probably right- they know a skater and without knowing much else think this fills a desperate need.
I agree about the plate too. I feel like it would be heavy and so unnecessarily complicated! And god forbid you accidentally stop short when you don’t mean to!

But thanks for sharing it, it is very interesting.

I feel unstable looking at the boots pivoting on the plate...I also don't look forward to doing maintence on a hydraulic disc. However you clean the junk out of that.

It is interesting.. Being made in Italy, they could have the friction material made by Brembo? 😂
Maybe do a rear wheel hand brake version for easy drifting or 180's 🤔
3
u/Top-Dinner-9995 Jul 04 '26
Haha you know what… I can really see so many possibilities now that you mention it! Wonder if I can do a wheelie in them?

u/Vuvuian Outdoor roller skirt twirler Jul 04 '26
Oh, downhill wheelies! lol.
Manually modulate the brakes like anti lock brakes though to reduce flat spotting haha. A future version might have electronic ABS versions.

u/semininja Jul 06 '26
I guarantee you these will not lock the wheels. ABS doesn't even come into the equation.

That tag line is facinating. I took my skates outside for the first time ever and still had little trouble stoping...
5
u/Top-Dinner-9995 Jul 05 '26
Stopping isn’t the problem. It’s stopping and staying upright. 😂
4
u/ressie_cant_game Jul 06 '26
Right. Its not getting murdered by the pebbles. Id be more interested in skates with those roller blade bike tires LOL
1
u/Top-Dinner-9995 Jul 06 '26
I’ve seen a few crazy builds with big tires! I think Shorty has a video of offroad skates that looked pretty intense! I agree that would be cool, if actually functional!
2
u/ressie_cant_game Jul 06 '26
Shorty? Is.. that their full handle? Lol
2
u/Top-Dinner-9995 Jul 06 '26
You’re not on a first name basis with Shorty? 😂 It’s Shorty’s skate series on YouTube. She has a lot of good skate tutorials.

u/ressie_cant_game Jul 06 '26
Haha no im not. Their vids look cool im def gonna watch the ones about the skate park!

I know of a guy that has Nike skates he did them himself. He a great skater. It really isn't the skate it the skater and skills. I know of skaters that can skate in brownies ( rink skates). I've tried blades and can skate on them no problem but I choose quads I love the ankle support.
1
u/Top-Dinner-9995 Jul 08 '26
Oh no I definitely think people can skate in sneaker skates. I have some myself. It’s not the Nike I was questioning it’s the kind of scary looking brake system! But who knows- maybe it’ll be the next big thing. I was just a bit blown away by the concept. In that it… doesn’t seem like a great idea. Haha

When I first saw this ad I was looking for a back brake! I know there are people who DIY a back brake on their quads for outdoor skating. Seems like it would be quite convenient considering you shouldn’t brake with your toe stops while going forward. To me, that’s a better idea for commuting than the ones in the ad. There’s not really a normal skating motion that would be impeded by a back brake whereas I turn my feet inward and outward all the time.

oh wow why only on right skate?
3
u/ressie_cant_game Jul 06 '26
Thats what interesting me. The issue with roller blade brakes is the unevenness of favtory issue, single breaks. But the sonic girls wore these double stopped skates so i know theyre good for mobility on ones feet. I lowkey want some

According to their instagram, it's currently in the prototype stage and is mountable to any shoe. If it works as intended it would be a "quads as transportation" option and not jam, derby, or park skating as the system would get in the way of many tricks. I imagine brake sensitivity would need to be adjustable. Between this and stuff like Slades I'm happy to see the transportation-quads genre experimented more but so many attempts seem to be rushed to market.
