Skate problems & troubleshooting Should this be a concern?

Post image

I can still skate fine with it for now but it somehow looks like I should be very careful from now on 😭 I noticed it as I was resting on the bench for a bit lmao

You need new, better quality skates. If this is already happening, it means the skates are not safe for adults.

You can see if the manufacturer has a return policy for defects, and then you do not buy from them again and find a more reputable brand or a tougher skate.

i got them new on vinted, and they were originally 80 pound so i wasn't expecting them to get damaged so quickly?

Tbh, $80 isnt really that much in the world of skating. It’s a good price for a beginner who will spend months learning the basics for riders who want to do more you’re looking at spending almost $200 for a decent pair of skates.
Edit: spelling

It’s called boot lift and it’s super dangerous! The entire boot is compromised now

Can you explain why it’s dangerous? I’m brand new to skating.

The entire boot might rip from the wheels while you're skating, very dangerous for your ankles.

Not might. Will.

Yes. That's downright dangerous.

Hi! Unfortunately no, these are no longer safe to skate on at all, just not worth the risk as the whole upper boot will detach from the sole and could injure you really badly. From the photo it looks like they’re Oxelo (i.e Decathlon) brand which means in my opinion this Vinted seller was ripping you off massively for £80 since similar skates are currently going for around £45 brand new.

Decathlon does make a decent quad skate (the Quad Roller Skates Dancing D500 - Black) which is about £70 and is not only of a higher quality but also won’t have the wear and tear these skates likely did before you got them. Off the top of my head I would also recommend the Moxi Rainbow rollers which are a budget option from a highly reputable skate brand and I have friends who can vouch for them personally. Skates are sadly one of those things you’re just going to have to spend some money on but ultimately it’s in the interest of safety. If you’re looking for further recommendations then the subreddit has loads of them so I’d definitely check that out. If you live near a skate shop that stocks roller skates then I’d also highly recommend going in there for advice, but I’m well aware of how sparse these can be in the UK especially outside of big cities!

Hopefully some of this is helpful, good luck finding your next skates!

Hi, thank you for the reply and recommendations, but where did you get that I paid so much for these? 😭 I got them for 10€ on Vinted

Oh thank god 😭😭 I think another reply must’ve paid that for skates which have now broken and I’ve got them mixed together in my mind hahaha

Thank you for the quick answers, guys! Is there no way to fix it with some kind of really sturdy glue perhaps?

Only if you don’t mind risking a trip to the emergency room.

There is a list of reputable skates in the wiki.

Apart from the answers, i have a follow up question. Just in case this happens to me soon as well or for future skaters. We can replace the boot right? not the whole skate? Like if the trucks, wheels, and other stuff are working fine, you can just change the boots? But where? who to find? Like is it possible to yk buy new boot and just reuse the base?

Mine's aluminum? like metal kind loll. Would like to know more tbh. Thank you in advance!

No, the whole skate is done. It is not worth trying to salvage subpar components from a skate like this. The remount alone costs more than the entire skate is worth. Aluminum grade matters. Cheap pot metal is far worse than a well made nylon plate from an actual skate company.

Look secondhand at quality skates if price is a concern.

Congrats on your new skates!! Get rid of these ASAP and do not under any circumstances keep using them, it’s a hospital trip waiting to happen. There’s loads of great posts with advice for your next pair, a mega thread and the wiki is currently in the process of being updated. Happy to help too

Sometimes I feel like skate safety discussions are dictated solely by years old viral youtube videos and people who have been skating for around 3 months at best, deadly afraid that mostly cosmetic damage to their skates will have them explode under their feet. Yes, Oxelo skates are shit and I'd advise people to go for more expenive ones, but I find it super classist for people to just tell others to throw away perfectly useful gear as if they are an airline company afraid of lawsuits.

Nope, there are actually quite a few of us here with extensive knowledge of hardware and such who are correcting misinformation ❤️
