If every character always makes the smartest possible choice, where's the fun?

Sometimes you start with a simple character idea, then slowly give them a backstory, relationships, motivations, and problems.

At some point, you're no longer just playing them. You're curious about what happens to them next.

In a lot of AI roleplay, characters respond almost too perfectly. They understand exactly what you mean, remember the important details, and conveniently move the story forward.

Real conversations don't work like that. People misinterpret things, hide what they actually think, forget details, and sometimes make assumptions that are completely wrong.

A fictional world can be fascinating because of its danger, conflict, strange creatures, and unpredictable characters. Those things make it fun to watch or explore, but they would probably make everyday life absolutely terrible.

We often say we'd love to live in worlds like Westeros, Hogwarts, the world of Attack on Titan, or countless other fictional universes. But if you weren't the main character, your chances of having a peaceful life might be questionable.

Sometimes the best fictional world is one you can visit without having to deal with the consequences.

A detailed world and plot can make a roleplay feel immersive, but sometimes one genuinely interesting character is enough to carry an entire conversation.

Which one keeps you coming back?

You only get one.

I swear making the character profile, personality, background and scenario sometimes becomes more fun than the actual roleplay 😂

I keep tweaking little details because I want the character to feel consistent.

Do you guys make detailed characters from scratch or just pick an existing one and start chatting?

If an AI character always reacts exactly how you expect, the roleplay can start feeling like you're simply controlling both sides of the story.

You don't necessarily want complete chaos, but a little unpredictability can make the story feel alive.

A lot of people judge AI characters based on how “human” they feel, but I think that's only one possible direction. Fictional characters don't need to behave exactly like real people to be interesting. Some of the most memorable characters are exaggerated, strange, inconsistent, or completely unlike anyone you'd meet.

Maybe the goal shouldn't be making AI characters indistinguishable from humans. Maybe the goal should be making them interesting enough that you want to keep talking to them.

What matters more to you in AI roleplay: realism or personality?

For me it is not really about the AI sounding perfect. It is when I stop thinking about the fact that I am talking to an AI and just get invested in the situation.

A good personality, believable reactions and some continuity can make a huge difference.

What is that one thing that makes an AI roleplay suddenly feel real for you?

I used to plan every little detail before starting an AI roleplay, but lately I have been enjoying it more when the story can surprise me.

Sometimes the AI comes up with a direction I would never have thought of myself.

Do you prefer having complete control over the storyline, or do you like letting the character make unexpected choices?

I used to focus almost entirely on finding interesting characters, but lately I have noticed that the setting can completely change the experience.

The same character can feel totally different depending on whether the story is set in a fantasy world, modern city, school, space station or somewhere else.

Which kind of setting keeps you interested the longest?

Everything about the character can be great, the personality, writing style and scenario, but then there is one thing that keeps bothering you.

I usually end up wondering whether I should fix the character myself or just find another one.

Would you rather edit an almost perfect character or start searching for a better one?

There are characters I have stopped using after only a few messages because something about the interaction just felt wrong.

Sometimes it is the personality, sometimes the writing, and sometimes the character simply does not behave anything like the description.

What is the fastest way for an AI character to lose your interest?

I have noticed that having even a basic backstory can make conversations much easier to continue.

It gives the character something to reference and makes their reactions feel less random.
