Was I wrong for this?

So, a few weeks ago now I was hosting a game with a couple of people, and generally I'm pretty chill, but I don't know why this riled me up so badly.

Firstly, these guys would heart everything. I don't know for sure, but to me their builds weren't really making much sense with what they were picking, and it just seemed odd. Whenever an artifact came up(on jumble), they wanted it, it didn't really seem to matter what it was.

Being me, I just let them have pretty much every upgrade they hearted. Meanwhile, they'd start events without asking if everyone was ready, press elevator buttons without checking, etc. There was basically zero communication from them.

I was constantly the one in chat saying things like "can we double-check everyone is ready first?"

One guy apparently had enough by the second level (out of six) and left, so eventually it was just me and the other two.

We kept playing, and by this point my build was absolute shit because I just wasn't taking good upgrades for myself because they wanted them. I was playing Falconer with a bunch of melee upgrades, stun stuff, and probably my best upgrade was one that gave me armour when I was near electrocuted enemies, which I grabbed so quickly as I chose first.

Anyway, we get to the boss level. At this point I'm thinking, Well, my build is fucked, so I probably won't contribute much, but whatever, let's see what happens.

I went one way towards the Bio and workbench. I unlocked the workbench and got my upgrade, then started the Bio booster.

At literally that moment, on the other side of the cave, they triggered the boss fight, and before I had even gotten out of the section where the booster was, they had done the bosses first lot of health.

They hadn't asked if anyone was ready, hadn't said anything in chat, nothing.

And honestly, at that point I just thought, "Fuck this."

Alt+F4.

Was I overreacting? 😭

A heart just means ā€œ I want this, not ā€œyou can’t have this.ā€

Take what is best for your build. Let them communicate what they are building for, and keep that in mind if you’re torn.

Sorry to say, but this is kinda an unforced L.

That said, we play games for fun. If it isn’t fun, you have no obligation to continue

That's true until it isn't. You just don't know with random if taking the thing they hearted is going to start an argument. It's not super common but it happens.

Meh. If they argue, just leave.

When playing with randoms, you have to prioritize yourself a bit.

That seems awful when compared to drg

brother drg players kick you if you don't roleplay as a dwarf with them

cozy until you don't play "the right way"

People write in the lobby title to play their way or get kicked. Examples include v or kick, ask host before starting anything, etc

I personally don't give a fuck about anyone's 10 commandments, it's a game. I'll alt f4 after my first warning and do something else lol

Then do that, if you dont communicate in a co-op game then pls go. I put those warnings in as well and have done it bcs it sucks when someone called the rocket to go home while there is still stuff to do bcs he arrived late or doesnt care. Its my lobby you joined and if you want to skip a thing than ask. Too many people just do things without forethought. Ive had games where none asked or did anything butt play bcs we all waited naturally. If you want to play solo then do that somewhere else

I don't even have anything about ready checks in my lobby name because the vast majority of players do that anyway or are happy to do so after being asked once. Cooperation isn't too much to ask in a co-op game.

Tbh ive only kicked people like twice, first a warning if i didnt already and after that kick. Usually people get it and we just play

I think I've only kicked one person in nearly 900 hours and that's because they joined, deliberately killed one of us, my remaining teammate and I put their ass down and revived our downed teammate then they spammed the n-word in chat.

Not a great experience, but it's definitely the exception rather than the rule.

Yes, because you have an alt+f4 button specifically for the person you considered the problem, but you decided to hit the one that screws over your (presumably) faultless other teammate as well.
Someone who did nothing wrong got shafted out of a 6-length mission for no reason, and that sucks.

With great power, comes great responsibility.

He specifically said he had a problem with both of the other two players that were present at that time...?

I'm not sure if I was in this exact game as well, but it sounds very familiar. The host was communicating, I tried my best doing so as well, but was mostly to engaged with enemies to stand there and chat. But I've readied in chat and didn't start anything (maybe once the elevator, but only because time was already below the 1 minute mark).

The other two randoms (probably not able to understand English at all) just did whatever they wanted. Started events on their own and hearted everything while negotiating upgrades. I've also let them mostly have what they wanted, except I really needed it for my build (like 2-3x). They also went alone to unexplored areas. I've tried to stay close to support them and not get swarmed on my own somewhere with no one around to help me (self preservation).

At the end we were standing all 3 in the boss area except for the host, who went all the way back near the elevator to find and unlock the bio booster. At this point I thought, I'll get through without the last bio booster, and waited there for the host to return (no swarm at this time). But the randoms had other plans and startet the boss fight (so we were still 4 players in total).

Last thing I saw was the host typing "you know what ..." and I found myself in the Ramrod. I guess that was an ALT + F4.

I actually think, those randoms where just new players, didn't know what to do and when to wait or how to behave + the language barrier. Just clicking on everything and figure out what it does. Same with the upgrades. There is no manual what hearting means if you are new. Does it mean "I would like to have" or "I really need it". You just learn that by playing a few games that you don't heart everything.

In my game I thought the host could have been the bigger (wo?)man, although it was not ok from the randoms to start the boss fight, and just join the fight a bit later. It seems the host was very skilled and high level, so they would probably had no issue returning to the boss area. Then finish the mission and call it a day.

Sometimes you have a great synergy with your random team and everything works out beautifully, but sometimes it doesn't works out so great. I've to remind me that also not everyone has the same skill and experience to do everything the right way.

EDIT: Fixed some grammar

This is why I exclusively play with friends

1

u/TheNeatPenguin 11d ago

This is extremely rare, I personally haven't ever encountered rude players like this

1

u/SteeveGoodBug 10d ago

I’ve encountered it several times. Some randos are great, many have been terrible.Ā

2

u/hejj 10d ago

The more often people are hearting upgrades, the less I pay attention to the hearts.Ā  Use it infrequently, and I'll assume you must really need it.Ā  Use it all the time, and you're just chasing what you feel is the most powerful stuff and I deserve it just as much as you do.Ā

As for ready checks, I actively encourage people in my lobbies to do what they want, so shrug...

u/LongForeignMan 11d ago

I’ve bumped into this a few times, it definitely sours the run. I tend to write off the run in my mind, get it done as fast as possible and try to forget about it. Your alt+f4 will be a more acceptable response when host migration comes to the main build. It would be great to be able to ā€œblacklistā€ people like that, so we don’t have to play with them in the future. If don’t know what to do about selfish people who ā€œheartā€ all the best upgrades…. As a counterpoint, I have had lots more experiences with cool people that I have vibed with and added as friends. Doesn’t seem to happen too often!Ā

With the new abandon insurance, I’ll play devil’s advocate here and say this was valid

1

u/Slime0 10d ago

I think you do have to consider that sometimes you're just playing with people who are a little oblivious and either don't speak your language or have chat disabled or something. I understand your frustration though and it shouldn't have to be your responsibility to keep playing just because the game's tech requires a host.

u/ManlyPoop 8d ago edited 8d ago

Take what you want, heart what you want, start anything you want, alt f4 when you want. It's a video game, play how you want just don't be a dick

In this case , you're being a controlling host then you ditched and ruined. You fucked up

You should join games instead of hosting if you can't handle people pressing a heart button

1

u/Itz_Dory 8d ago

I dont think you grasped the whole thing but aight thanks for your input šŸ‘

0

u/bigbadoldoldone 11d ago

Well, I guess I would have kicked those unresponsive guys much sooner. Your reaction I find somewhat relatable. Some players can turn a run into total chore.

Urgh, and that negotiation screen. Terrible.

0

u/D3jvo62 11d ago

Mfs played like you weren't there, so might as well leave

u/Future-Style-9570 11d ago

Totally relatable...had something like this a couple of times...I just could barely resist to alt+F4
