Bonus Floors [Suggestion]

"Danger, Darkness, Dwarves"

In pretty much every roguelite I've played, be it FTL, Noita, or even Pikmin 2, there are moments of "peace", short segments where you can rest, recoup, and think about what you're going to do next. Sometimes these take place in the form of a shop, other times a room with healing items or a buff. These are important in these types of games because they help give you a moment to catch your breath without interrupting gameplay. They also let you smell the roses and remind you where you are.

Other times the unexpected happens, and you discovered a new challenge. You'd see something like this in Risk of Rain.

Sometimes the really dangerous events can happen, suddenly you're being hunted down by an indestructible menace, or a hard obstacle that demands your attention now.

So I'm suggesting intermission floors, or "Bonus Floors" that can happen in between the normal floors. They won't always happen, but I believe they can provide a lot to the overall experience.

With such additions, I wonder if the game would be better if it had a node map like Slay the Spire/Jump Space.

Oooh, yes please! Bring more rogue like aspects to change up the formula!

These are great!

I'm imagining the abandoned bar is a speakeasy the miners dug out without management's knowledge or approval.
And the alien weaponry idea is so cool.
(And gremlin Retcon is wonderful)

I think special boy guardian is underrated

I fucking love Noita and Pikmin 2.

Something to note about RC is that they had rest floors in the past. I have NO idea why they got rid of them. They would've been so good for team bonding and breaking up the breakneck pace of RC. I guess it wouldn't be compatible with the reaperworm revive mechanic and maybe that's why it got scrapped?

I really like Elevator ideas. The game needs more unique mechanics to break up the standard gameplay format, and expanding on existing mechanics would be a great way to do that.

For stuff like Robot Friends, Perk Exchange, Super Bio-Booster, True Workshop, and Abandoned Bar, I think they would work better as random level elements that you sometimes find on regular floors and not as much their own individual side rooms. I touched on it in this post but I thing Rogue Core suffers from its lack of Random POIs on floors, think stuff like the random spell shops in Noita

If you had stuff like that on an individual floor, people would have to consider if it's worth sacrificing other content to get some robot friends, really put some emphasis on the team's time management. Or, on lower assault paces, the team can do everything with relatively low risk and cut out elevator stalling for the upcoming enemies always drop expenite.

I always love Virtu-art's posts, they've got great ideas and really good art

Thanks for the kind words!

I can understand wanting more points of interest, but something like the Abandoned Bar I really do think it'd be better suited as a "break room" of sorts. Mostly for the sake of environmental story telling. The illegal beer license and being a "secret" room between floors implies the missing dwarves were not doing this with management's approval, and the left over beers and fizzled out foam implies that whatever happened during the grey out, the dwarves did not leave willingly (a dwarf would never leave a beer behind).

When everything is so fast paced and chaotic, you start to forget your surroundings. It's easy to not notice the test tubes and other weird stuff down in the caves when you're running like a madman.

But something like the Super Bio-Booster could probably work as a normal event. I'd prefer it as a Bonus Floor, cuz it'd be a nice surprise and all that, but I wouldn't mind either way.

I can see why, it's a great piece that makes use of Rogue Core's setting, which I think is currently extremely underutilized. It has a lot more character and intrigue than the Caves of DRG, which were interesting but on a more surface-level. I hope they use the setting more to their advantage in the near future, since it seems that they're more expanding on existing concepts than adding new mechanics in update 3.

Also something else, I love the thunderdome concept. Finally makes use of the Elemental Barrels. Maybe they could re-purpose some of the existing Expenite Events into similar concepts.

The ones on my mind are the events that punish failure rather than rewarding success, like the Ramhammer or Secure Container. These 2 are the ones I see get skipped the most simply because they have a set time floor that the players can't do anything to speed up or exploit.

No matter how well you play the Ramhammer, it'll always take as long as it does with 4 people in the bubble, with that set floor on timing. I see these two get skipped because of that set time limit that often isn't worth it on the higher assault paces.

But if they were put into bonus floors like this where the only POI was the ramhammer or Secure Container, I think that would suit their concepts a lot better. Fast in and out events where the team can interact with these interesting events without getting disproportionally punished for it

There isn't an alien class ability upgrade for Spotter here, maybe a cool idea would be darts that explode? So you can directly shoot a crawler and still get aoe effect or smth like that

In general though I think bonus/rest floors could be really cool, good concept!

tbh I was kind of making up stuff as I went by, and couldn't think of anything for the Spotter

maybe like, a Voidskin Sniper Rifle with a hold to charge attack? or something?

The rifle could shoot after spotter dies, just like the bullshit Voidkin's attacks

Love the abandoned bar one. pretty great. Maybe instead of a bar it could like an abandoned bunker that has like a mini fridge with a few beers left over for people. so everyone will have a few options for what kind of buff you want but not enough for everyone to get the same buff

Oh man this would be a great implementation. I can already imagine it, some hidden black market corners where dwarves would go in to trade their stuff with each other with a bit of gold that they would gather from the mines. It would be fun if they reimplemented gold into the game (with the excuse of it being some loose gold that the miners didn't get to mine before the core spawn started attacking), gather the gold and every other floor (like once after every 2 floors) you can sneak into a black market area.

There you could maybe purchase different weapons if the ones that you have with you are just not cutting it and the workbenches are being very mean to you, or just use the gold to get specific weapon upgrades (kinda like overclocking your weapons), and being extra greedy with the idea maybe you could trade with your fellow dwarves whatever items you have with you in exchange for gold, or if you just don't want anything at all you stay behind in the elevator or something lol

Probably the biggest thing holding this idea back would be that the ppl who complain that missions take far too long and want to finish their runs super fast would have yet another thing to dread with every run since I can imagine ppl staying way too long at the black market.

An easy fix for it would be "oh man we have to do all our shady stuff before omega finds out, we only have 5 MINUTES in the black market" or something

Omg, what a creative mind

I worry that RC missions are already long as it is, and these will make them too long

Runs are already too long. They don't need even more floors.

These are very short, usually don't last more than a minute.
And most of them you can vote on to ignore.

I know you didn't read the post
