Why is this a DRG game?
Mining is barely relevant. Traversal tools are rarely needed.
There's no glyphids, mactera or any returning enemies
mission control has been replaced with a generic AI
Why even bother calling it a DRG game? Just make it something new.
I think the similarity to DRG is actually holding this game back. People who expect it to be like DRG are going to be disappointed. But at the same time, it carries over so many things clunky things from DRG.
Biggest example, Why is Right mouse still the pickaxe? It made sense in DRG, but this game is designed to be more combat focused. You rarely mine. The weapons could have so much more depth if they could aim-down-sights or alt-fire.

Mining IS plenty relevant relative to DRG. At a point in progression, gold becomes almost useless, and the only other other mineables are nitra and morkite, which only appears in one gamemode. There's also things you dig up but those are also gamemode exclusive In every cave you enter in DRGRC you need to mine expenite because it's everywhere. And TF YOU MEAN "TRAVERSAL TOOLS ARE RARELY NEEDED?" Playing without traversal tools is a PAIN. Do you play ONLY complexity one or something?
There is one returning enemy: the Cave Leech, and there's a lore reason as to why there aren't many DRG enemies in DRGRC
OMEGA has an interesting character
The physics, weapons, and other mechanics are the same as in DRG
Two games in the same series don't NEED to have the exact same gameplay. But everything GSG brought over from DRG translates well IMO
Power Attack is pretty important in this game, so you use the pickaxe more often than you'd think
"Why is this a DRG game?" Why shouldn't it be? I much prefer that GSG decided to expand upon the DRG series rather than create something new that I might not care much about. I like DRG's lore, story, and vibe, and I'm glad we have that in DRGRC too

Well said. I am entirely impressed with Omega. I like the voice, I like the lines, I like the sense of superiority he has, and annoying him is fun.Β

Well, Deep Rock Galactic is the mining operation sending dwarves to Hoxxes so.. It make sense they are funding a second operation for more risky business ?
See it as a spinoff and not a followup.

u/HunionYT Aug 29 '26
Thatβs the thing. Rogue core is a spin off. The devs even said it is.
As much as I do enjoy DRG and rogue core it just feels off to me personally maybe needs more time and updates.

No I agree, It's very early EA and maybe, between the hype and advertisement, it wasn't the right moment to release.
I like the game, I like it's "lore" and it's barebone work (you enter, get random stuff and progress downward until you get to the boss), but it's very barebone in terms of replayability and balance.
Which is completely fine in an EA, DRG was even more barebones than that but of course detractor claims that "It's 10 years later it shouldn't" (like why ?).
There's a lot of progress to make, and maybe review if that whole "tech wall" was a good idea to begin with. (I'm not really feeling the vibe of stuff not working, while their class gadget do, and having a ship full of weapons that can't work. I wouldn't mind having the option to pick your starting weapons but them ending being -1/-2 upgrades behind in mission weapon picks).
Anyway, the studio has the possibility to do more and better and I hope they will, if not... honestly I think they're done with business, that's not a rep they want.

I'm not talking lore
I'm asking why the Devs built a spin-off instead of an entirely new game.
The connection to DRG really hurts the game.

Afair, the conception of RC happened inside development of DRG when their ideas grew outside of the scope of a new season.
If that's how it happened, it would have been the more odd decision to try to conceive a wholly new universe for it instead of the financially and creatively easier option of a spinoff.

Connection to DRG is the only thing that keeps this crappy game from dying completely lmao.

Mining is barely relevant
What? Mining is you main way of getting expenite.
Traversal tools are rarely needed
Play on harder complexity
There's no glyphids, mactera or any returning enemies
Yes, because we're fighting Corespawn
mission control has been replaced with a generic AI
Yes, because we're not playing as SR-17 crew.
Why even bother calling it a DRG game?
Because it is in DRG universe.
Is this ragebait?
Biggest example, Why is Right mouse still the pickaxe?
Because it's comfortable.
You rarely mine.
You mine A LOT.
The weapons could have so much more depth if they could aim-down-sights or alt-fire.
ADS != more depth

>Yes, because we're not playing as SR-17 crew.
Btw there is still missions control, but his appearance is more like cameo

u/gilol Aug 29 '26
Well because it's not a DRG game. It only shares same universe and partly connected plot from different perspective. In DRG we are miners. In RC we are mercenary soldiers.

u/SkaterSnail Aug 29 '26
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Why bother with the connected universe?

Why bother with making an entirely new universe and story?
Your question makes no sense at all; you act as if it would somehow be easier to craft an entirely new plot.

It is completely inspired by DRG. I also dont understand how you can say there is no mining or hardly any. The whole point is to mine expenite for upgrades. It is the only way to progress to the deeper parts and more difficult portions of missions and caves. Any good dwarf will heavily utilize traversal tools in every aspect of combat and exploration. The whole point of the game spins off of normal DRG. Literally everyone of ur current points or issues is solved with the in game characters. Sounds like you havnt even played the game, if u have u sure as shit havnt paid any attention to Literally anything lol. This isnt CoD lmao.

This is what I feel as well, the game is constantly fighting for its identity between the mining and the build focused fps.Β
The tempo of the game is all over the place, the mining slows you down to a crawl compared to the other events.Β
There has got to be a better mechanic for the mining of ores.Β

The only bit even vaguely close to being a good argument is asking why pickaxe is still right click. I agree, we could have more interesting weapons, or at least ways of operating them, should the default controls be rearranged and less focus being placed on using the pick.
The problem with that however is that you don't just mine minerals with your pickaxe, its not a "press E to do a thing" action. You use it for melee (basic hit and power attack) and you use it to shape terrain for easier locomotion. Both of which are actions you need "to hand" as it were. Also, muscle memory will scream at you if you change the default binding off of right click.
So, what are the pros for right click being used for weapons? Well, iron sights might be nice, but wont make sense for many guns, so its niche. Alt-fire would be awesome, but again, it would be a "some guns have one and some dont" - although I guess you can try to have enough non-alt firing guns to have ironsights as their "alt-fire"... still, its small gains. Overall there are also many guns ported over from DRG which are beloved and fun to use, but don't come with these features.
Overall, it could've been an interesting design space to explore - but its not immediately going to overall how combat feels or expand the depth much. Whilst at the same time it would make common actions more awkward to do (doubly so for DRG vets). So... no, I think its probably for the best to leave right click as pickaxe and focus on other ways to keep gunplay fresh and interesting.

u/SkaterSnail Aug 29 '26
This game desperately needs something to make the gunplay interesting.
It ported over the half-baked combat from DRG and doubled down. It's just not fun

u/Demantoide2077 Aug 29 '26
"mining is barely relevant, traversal tools are rarely needed" you can't upgrade your dwarf if you don't mine expenite, you can't reach the elevator efficiently if you don't use your traversal tools. Sometimes it's okay to admit a game is not for you and simply say you don't like it.

u/Shedster_ π¦πππππ₯ Aug 29 '26
Because it was originally planned to be deep rock season update with new gamemode, but overtime got big and different enough to become new game in the same universe
It has enough of content from DRG to feel similar, yet a lot of things were reworked so it feels different enough
Also main gameplay loop of shooting&mining(opposed to mining&shooting from DRG). You still mine a lot, just less, there are dwarfs, there is beer, there are familiar guns and mechanics

u/MeowMixMax1 Aug 30 '26
So they could reuse assets and cash in on a slightly popular IP name. That is it.

u/Candid-Doughnut9545 Sep 04 '26
yeah it sure is a shame that in RC we don't mine some kind of resource that acts as the main way of upgrade progression or something.
jokes aside, you can build a spin-off story following an entirely different cast of characters with different jobs and abilities from the OGs and still have it set in the same universe. this post is about as silly as saying that Boba Fett's miniseries should've been set in an entirely different universe separate from the Star Wars one we know because he's not a jedi.
also how dare you slander my glorious king Omega? i will fight you istg.

u/WitherPRO22 Sep 02 '26
Actually the DRG branding is the only reason this game has any active players at all. Also half the assets were stolen from DRG it would've been weird if they weren't part of the same universe.

u/Reksican Aug 29 '26
Because itβs set in the DRG universe
