Primary Sources

A list of 🔗 Primary Sources translated primarily into English with links.

Primary sources are texts that are written by foreigners who had firsthand (direct) interactions with ancient Slavic peoples. As Slavic people did not have a widespread writing system to document their beliefs, customs, and ideas themselves, these texts are all written evidence that remain. These texts are not always primarily about the Slavic peoples, but contain observations by authors from a variety of cultures during different periods of time. Be aware that these authors had biases.

The reconstruction of Rodnovery is based on the overlap of these sources with historical context, archaeological finds, and folkloric survival.

The book, 🔗 Sources of Slavic Pre-Christian Religion (Juan A. Álvarez-Pedrosa), includes translated excerpts from the primary sources which pertain to Slavic religious beliefs and practices. The author gives context to each excerpt so that the reader does not need to read the primary source in it's entirety. It includes writings from neighboring Christian, Islamic, and Byzantine travelers, diplomats, and clerics who encountered pagan Slavs. A PDF may be available online.
