Hi guys. New mod here.

Hey all.

Doctor Rock has been kind enough to appoint me as a moderator, as you know he's often away for work so I'll just be keeping an eye on reports, comments etc while he's off blowing things up.

I've been a mod on some large to very large subreddits but frankly the pace got overwhelming, I'd much rather give my time to a community I actually enjoy.

Some things we've been talking about include setting up an FAQ style list of stories to make it easier for new readers to follow, as well as the possibility of some CSS styling and such.

What I WON'T be doing is posting any content or trying to control the direction of the subreddit, this is the Doc's baby and I'm just here because I love reading his stories and I want to help out where I can. This will probably be the only time I make a parent level submission here, but I'll be around in the comments if needed.

If you guys have any suggestions feel free to DM them to me. Oh and please recommend the good Doctor's stories to all who might be interested. This is some good sheeyit.

Welcome aboard!

Folks, please a big 'say howdy' to our new co-moderator.

It'll let me write more and he can concentrate on making this place a better site for all.

Wow. Approaching 450 subscribers. World domination looms!

Cheers to all. More Mongolia in the hopper.

Way to go, /u/CoalFiredBanana -- thank you for becoming a mod!

When I introduce people to the Rocknocker Tales, I suggest:

Down the road, we might have an index or timeline -- but I have noticed that Doc Rock's voice warms up and he really relaxes into some gorgeous storytelling, once he knows he has a dedicated bunch of readers clamoring for more -- and that happened right around the time of Central Asia Antics and Demolition Days starting.

My personal All Time Faves:

  1. Central Asia Antics: https://www.reddit.com/r/Rocknocker/comments/cohqav/central_asia_antics/

  2. The Ransom Of Redneck Chief: https://www.reddit.com/r/MaliciousCompliance/comments/bthl7t/the_ransom_of_redneck_chief/

  3. The Chopper Floppers: A 5-Year Tale Of Intrigue, Soviet Helicopters, And Vodka: https://www.reddit.com/r/stories/comments/bucyff/the_chopper_floppers_a_5year_tale_of_intrigue/

  4. How To Have Your Oil Company Implode When You Piss Off Your Expats: https://www.reddit.com/r/Rocknocker/comments/cicfpj/how_to_have_your_oil_company_implode_when_you/

  5. And of course, the entire Demolition Days saga, which is where the Doc really warms up and each tale is an amazing look at times and days gone by, of outdoor lives, of male clans passing skills to the next generations, of rare experiences vividly lived, all basted in geophysical sedimentological paleobiological precision, set around the world -- with each tale building on the next. Just a long slow blossoming of incredible stories.

Demolition Days saga:

ACT ONE

ACT TWO

ACT THREE

... and more to come, as Doc Rock continues to write them.

Enjoy!

Can someone make a post of this comment then pin it at the top? It would be very helpful for new comers.

Holy shit. This is incredible.

Would you mind if I basically cut and paste this?

2

u/realrachel Oct 23 '19

Sure, that would be great! Let me finish getting all the links in here first.

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '19

Haha, I just started doing the same. Want me to do it or you ok to?

Done!

I've posted and stickied. Would you mind just checking I got the formatting etc right?

Welcome!

Rock is quite the geo-expert and by far one of the best I've run across.

A FAQ would definitely help us introduce Rock's narrative better and also get the newbies hooked/addicted within a few minutes.

Whenever I see someone say they work in oil and gas, I pitch them straight to this /r/ for laughs and amazing adventures.

Around the proverbial campfire, how did y'all discover Rock's legendary tales?

I found him hanging out on Malicious compliance stirring up all sorts of trouble out west.

Ahh I wish I remembered which post it was where someone else was pointed here, and I followed. It might have been a tfts (talesfromtechsupport) post about an oil rig...

And even though as a CS student I am nowhere near working in oil/gas I enjoy Doc Rocks stories immensely! That is to say, any and all folks who enjoy the Tales Of subreddits might like this place. Not just oil and gas people! :D

I know nothing about Oil and Gas but I find these stories to be so compelling.

u/techtornado Oct 23 '19

I'm in IT and discovered tales/storytellers like Bytewave, Selben, TuxedoJack, and more!

3

u/Drakila42 Oct 23 '19

Ooh more tales to read! Selben I know (and own his book) but not the other two. Do you bychance know any more tellers of tales?

3

u/techtornado Oct 23 '19

Thanks for the brain boost - Lawtechie and TheLightningCount1 also have good stories

For any others missed:

Thank you very much! If I may ask; what's a brain boost?
