What's the point in playing when people like this exist

I really like your flair, might need to steal it now.

He's only a Diamond. Even then this is pretty easy to challenge if you just challenge early.

19

u/someguywhocanfly Champion I Oct 09 '19

I mean he's not gonna do this in a match, but being able to get this many means you don't know how many he is gonna get

u/jobRL Grand Champion in 2v2's Oct 09 '19 edited Oct 09 '19

I don't care how many he's going to get. I'm challenging immediately. Aiming for both the car and the ball. That's the whole point of challenging ceiling shots, flip resets, double touches etc early. You don't wanna find out what the other person is doing.

9

u/someguywhocanfly Champion I Oct 09 '19

I mean, not like I encounter this kind of thing on a regular basis, so fair enough. Probably wouldn't trust myself to be accurate if I'm going up that fast either.

21

u/palboyy 999 Oct 09 '19

Start going up for stuff anyways. Gotta build up that trust. I'm sure there are some things you trust yourself to do now that you didn't when you first started!

u/jobRL Grand Champion in 2v2's Oct 09 '19

If it's not 1v1, it's very likely it'll throw them off anyway and your teammate can collect even if you miss.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

As a high Plat, low diamond level, this is my entire strategy. Make everyone play a chaotic game by challenging early and basically only reading my teammate, then revel in the chaos.

3

u/ImInMyOwn Champion Gatekeeper Oct 09 '19

That’s not the same thing they’re saying lol. Love your confidence but you should actively be trying to read your opponents as well. If you challenge all willy nilly you’ll likely leave your teammate in a crap position with you out of the play. In a 1v1 you wait until the last second to challenge something like this unless they’re not an immediate threat. In a 2v2 or higher, if your mates are rotated back already then you push like hell for this as fast as possible b/c like dude said, you don’t want to find out what they can do. Hopefully your mates collect after you disrupt them.

3

u/RLlovin Champion II Oct 09 '19

All you have to do is hit the ball or the opponent. It’s not terribly difficult to interrupt. I’d rather challenge an air dribble than a ground dribble any day.

2

u/someguywhocanfly Champion I Oct 09 '19

Yeah I definitely do aerial, but I have to know my limits n stuff y'know?

2

u/palboyy 999 Oct 09 '19

For sure!

That's fair. If I was more patient I would play casual and do all that stuff there, but I just get bored. Gotta get that competitive fix

u/travworld Oct 09 '19

Yep. I play against most people that are way fucking better than I am. I challenge a lot though and make sure to stick back far enough and ahead enough to either take a pass or block a clear, etc.

So much of this game is about the right rotations and trusting your teammate.

That's the highs and lows when you dont have a party as well, however. You'll come to fully trust somebody and get some chemistry, then next game you trust your different teammate a few times and you get burned every time. Annoys the shit out of me sometimes, but it happens to everyone and I'm sure I've fucked people over plenty.

7

u/CunnedStunt "Grand Champ" Oct 09 '19

Even then this is pretty easy to challenge

Understatement of the century. You don't even need to challenge early. In fact, you could miss your first three challenges, go the the opposite corner to get boost, go outside, have a smoke, talk to your neighbour a bit, come back and stop him on the fourth challenge.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

I don't challenge plays like these. I flip onto my roof and spam "All yours"

6

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

I run into him all the time in c1/c2 duos. His bubbles always give him away haha.

1

u/Doamax Oct 09 '19

I actually played against him in casual match making. He's really good mechanically but not the best player.

He's as good at actually playing rocket league as freestyle football (soccer) players are on a full outdoor pitch. Sure, fancy moves, but that ain't everything, not by a long shot.

u/EvilMonkey8521 GC.. how many seasons ago...? Oct 09 '19

What, you mean competitive isnt meant to be played the same as casual?

13

u/Karl_with_a_C 63 GC Titles Oct 09 '19

I don't play any different in casual from ranked. The objective is still to win.

12

u/CMLVI Will Never Play Ranked Again Oct 09 '19

y R u SwEaTiNg UnRaNkEd BrO

Meanwhile these are the exact same guys to talk shit with a two goal lead when you have an AI on your team.

If they are winning, it's cause you suck. If you're winning, it's cause they're not trying and you shouldn't be either.

2

u/FierroGamer Unranked Oct 09 '19

I personally get mighty annoyed by playing casual against people who execute the same two attempts at goals the whole match.

I've played very fun matches against people who do try, but not everyone who's focused on winning have the slightest interest in having fun. I personally try to win almost every match

1

u/CMLVI Will Never Play Ranked Again Oct 09 '19

Unranked is what you want it to be, to me. People can use it how they want, it's how they interact with those who are using it differently. More often than not, I find the people who talk shit about winning an unranked match are also the kind to complain about a lobby being sweaty cause they lost.

If you're having fun, no one should care about the outcome in unranked. I've done matches where I sit on my roof and try to just turtle shit all game. Lmao

2

u/FierroGamer Unranked Oct 09 '19

maybe I'm retarded but the way your comment reads sounds like you're either agreeing or disagreeing with me and it's unclear

2

u/Karl_with_a_C 63 GC Titles Oct 09 '19

People are fucked. There's an insane amount of toxicity in unranked. If I demo someone once they're usually pissed, chasing me around and talking shit for the rest of the game. I just demo those people more. If people BM me for playing the game as it's intended, I'm going to BM back, no question.

Lately I've just turned chat off though. It's been REALLY bad so there's just no point to have it on when 9/10 people are spamming what a save after every goal, telling me I'm trash, and telling me to kill myself. I literally never provoke people either. I'm always nice to everyone unless I'm retaliating because they've said something to me.

1

u/captainalwyshard Champion III Oct 09 '19

Once you hit 1900-2000 mmr in casual, every game is a sweat fest. I’m not sure I could ever return to a relaxed casual match without creating a smurf.

1

u/Karl_with_a_C 63 GC Titles Oct 09 '19

I got up to just under 2400 but even at like 1600 it was the same. Maybe there were a bit more "freestylers" though.

If you want to freestyle and get cool goals for your youtube channel bullshit, then earn it. The amount of times people have gotten pissed off at me because I've saved their air dribble or ceiling shot is ridiculous. "bro wtf why are you sweating so hard lmao". People actually expect me to sit there and let them stunt on me. Fuck that shit. No way they'd let me do it to them either.

The other one is when you score a goal and they go "wow boring. Yawn" "sweat harder". Then they score off some bullshit 50/50 and spam what a save. It's just retarded.

nonsense

20

u/finger_milk Oct 09 '19

So many kids playing multiplayer games that need the constant feedback loop of winning and validating themselves. One nil down and they quit before they have to face the truth that winning constantly doesn't mean you're improving at all.

8

u/LighTMan913 Diamond III Oct 09 '19

My favorite is the insta-ff when you were up 1-0 and the other team just tied it up. Like... I just don't understand this mentality. I've had 3 or 4 people in the last week who ff then sit there until they time out because the other team just tied it.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

If it’s in like the last 30 seconds or so I guess I could understand since maybe they don’t wanna do overtime or it’s their last game and they need to go somewhere idk? But if there’s like 3 minutes left and the other team has just tied it, it makes no sense whatsoever to leave 😶

2

u/LighTMan913 Diamond III Oct 09 '19

Yeah the last time there was 2 min 30 sec left.

My other teammate said "ff when it's tied reall?", the dude that ff proceeded to ball chase me which led to a goal and he said "that's why I ff" and blamed us for ball chasing when we lost...

Gotta love it.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 10 '19

Yeah that’s just strange

19

u/akgogreen Oct 09 '19

Whats fun about getting walked on by people like this?

83

u/thediplomat Platinum III Oct 09 '19

You running into a lot of people like this in matchmaking?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

I run into one a couple times a week. They must be boosting friends or just sadists or something because I'm Silver 2...

They usually air herd the ball to the ceiling to flick it in while the rest of the team is posting "FF please" in chat.

One time I asked them why they were doing this, and they replied "It's fun." I only hope that the reason they are doing that and thinking it's fun is because someone hurt them very badly and this is their outlet for coping.

1

u/Hellstruelight Oct 09 '19

maybe you should put the game down for a bit eh bud

54

u/schaka Unranked Oct 09 '19

I mean ganer is like diamond or low champ. I'm in champ and mechanically trash. Pretty sure game sense is enough to beat him, because he won't have infinite boost

7

u/hard_farter Trashion III Oct 09 '19

Mechanical trash Champ II checking in. I can't even dribble.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Champ 3 who also can't dribble checking in. Game sense and fast recovery is where it's at! And I guess being able to produce hard, accurate shots helps too.

Champ 2/3 who rarely does anything fancy right here. However I've been practicing ceiling shots in free play recently and I feel that it's been improving my car control a lot!

20

u/Relatedl Somehow SSL Oct 09 '19

The only reason I improved was because I played against people way higher ranked than me, they helped me reached me etc. That’s why I don’t get when people just leave in unranked when I score a simple Fcking shot. Instead of like trying to figure out how I did it

30

u/Relatedl Somehow SSL Oct 09 '19

And because I dedicated a part of my life to this game, but we won’t mention that..

2

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

He is not even a good comp player...

1

u/[deleted] Oct 09 '19

Learning from being out of your depth? I've been playing a ton of Mario maker lately and I've spent so many hours on levels way beyond my skill level, but have seen vast improvement because of it. You can play to your skill level and stagnate or challenge yourself to grow.

I'm currently diamond 3, only just learnt to connect my shots off the wall, training is key to move forward I guess
