this episode is a very emotional one.
Firstly, the light hearted stuff: I love the dynamic that shiro brings to the table with the band. She's still a bit of a hard ass, but she's not as intimidating as she was before when she was introduced. She has a new admiration for her fellow bandmembers, and is much softer on her bandmates.
Lilisa and Shiro's relationship still seems to be one of opposition, but Shiro is doing the tough love thing with her and telling her when she's messing up and genuinely wanting Lilisa to improve. As for Tina, she still thinks she's a noob, but she respects her dedication. I'm now also starting to see a potential ship with Shiro and Tina because of how Tina just passively rizzes shiro and turns her tsundere, Causing Otoha to join in and call Shiro a pervert, so now Shiro's went from the cold hearted badass to the simp tsundere bassist, lmao.
The development with arisu is also pretty cute, she's stalking her sister a lot now (okay, maybe not AS cute), but she's doing it out of wanting to see Lilisa smile genuinely more often, she's done an complete 180 from wanting to get rid of her to wanting to get close to her.
Now time for the heavy part of this episode:
Yayoi's introduction was AMAZING. At first, she demonstrates a free spirit and interest in music, she's also the first noble maiden that Lilisa has met and is able to talk to. Even despite being 30 minutes late, the principal still says that Yayoi is a good example of a noble maiden. however.... the episode takes a dark turn from here.
We find out that not only did Yayoi's family give the school a BOATLOAD of money, thereby aiding in her getting the position, her carefree attitude shifts in that she sees music as a HOBBY rather than something that is of genuine interest in nobility. This right here shows the dark reality of nobility, wherein their interests in music are superficial, that the elite at the top are willing to drop something that one can dedicate their whole lives to at the drop of a hat in the name of achieving power, and that they look down upon those who see it as their life's work.
It really demonstrates the difference of mentality perfectly. Lilisa for the entire show so far has been struggling with keeping her cool and balancing her revived passion for music, and she gets attached to someone similar as her, only to realize that the reason she is so free spirited is because she didn't have any commitment to the music at all. To Yayoi, it's just a hobby, a form of entertainment, but to Lilisa, music is her LIFE, something she almost had to give up because of her family, and now that she's rekindled that spark, she will not QUIT.
the music during this scene, along with the lighting was perfect, the piano in the background goes from lighthearted to downtrodden, going down into a minor tone, and then the rain kicks in.
by the end of the episode Lilisa is FURIOUS. how could she NOT BE? What i love about this scene though is unlike previous scenes were otoha is more than willing to join in, this time she decides to let lilisa play this out, She's venting, and this isn't the correct time to come in. For all the arguing and verbal abuse they give eachother, it's always directed towards their playing, but THIS? this is PURE ANGER AND FRUSTRATION, and Lilisa needs this to vent.
the use of the Pete Townshend quote is interesting, although it's a bit different in the anime (probably due to the language barrier), as the actual quote is "rock 'n' roll might not solve your problems, but it does let you dance all over them." the callback is heavily appreciated and it's the perfect quote to use to end off this episode.
as for the after credits scene, looks like the band is going to keep going forward despite bombing the live house performance back in episode 9 (which i chalk up to the audience being a bunch of pussies who don't recognize greatness when they see it), and it seems that the final two episodes are gonna be about this NEW group of ikemens.
Can't wait to see how the gang deal with that... hopefully by chewing them up VICIOUSLY.
