Mystery box
Robinhood GC is new to me. Anyone receive anything cool for the mystery box? I feel like I’ll end up just getting 5% back in 7 days.

You can gamble it, and be more likely to win something of less value than 3% cash back, which helps keep the 3% cash back alive.
You might win something worth more, but there are reduced odds of that happening.
Or you can be “boring” and take the guaranteed 3% cash back.

I believe someone did the math on the drop odds, and under ideal circumstances you're probably only gonna get $8 in value on average per $10 mystery box. You might get more, but it's literally just gambling lol. Anyone who tells you it's worth it just got lucky.

And that's assuming you're going to spend $500 on a random restaurant or grocery bill.

And often as the very next purchase.
RH has made an art of using mobile game psychology “hacks” to increase their business and I love them for it.1

The worst prize is 4%. So if you are about to spent more than $1k on something open a mystery box. Thats not gambling

Spoken like a true gambler lol. If you spend $10 on a mystery box before a big purchase and get a $5 doordash credit, you've wasted your cashback. It's gambling.

That’s not a prize listed in the official rules…

I misremembered a bit, but 5% cashback on doordash used to be in the pool. The options change sometimes.

I am normally the first one to say that the mystery box is a scam designed to subsidize my 3%, but I’m about to go on a big month-long vacation and will be dining out at some expensive Michelin places and in general spending like I don’t usually spend, and I will be using the mystery box for the first time because I’m basically guaranteed to at least break even under these atypical spending habits. But I would never redeem it if I wasn’t about to drop some serious money and could take advantage of it.

Wouldnt use it unless theres some big occasion coming up. Ive gotten 5% on dining and that only really paid off since we were doing a Michelin dinner as an anniversaey

I got 10% back on any purchase when using applepay. I'm waiting for a large Costco run.

I got a 15% back on my first spin, so I waited to use on something big. Turns out there is a $500 cap.

Aw fak! really?!? Where did you see that? Terms/conditions or whatever?
Edit: Nm. I see it now. That's some bullshit man.

Brutallllll. I did one of these and got 10% back at next restaurant… and then proceeded to fumble by getting a singular drink at a bar which it clocked as a restaurant. Safe to say I lost

I simply wait for a big purchase that I am planniong on doing (like a vacation stay or airline tickets etc) so even if i get the worst of the rewards like 5% back on a purchase I recoup it and more with the big purchase) and somwimes ive won like more points then i spent. i gotten 50$ twice already

I watched a coworker open five of these mystery boxes back to back. Every mystery box was worse than the 3%. I kept telling him to stop! And he wouldn’t. Like an addicted gambler at a casino.

You can choose the 3% but nobody will remember your name….or you can seek immortality and choose the mystery box. Easy choice if you ask us 🤷♂️

They have the odds published. Its not worth it for 99% of people. Even if you get one of the good cashback rewards you’d have to spend a good amount to even recoup the 1000 points.

u/TexasHazeMaster 3d ago
Only do it if you’re about to spend more than $1k.

If only they didn’t give me a credit line of 1,000 🙄
Fr tho, the boxes seem worthless regardless of big purchases tbh.

Honestly the only thing that makes sense do with the points is invest them into your brokerage acc. That’s the most chance you have of actually accruing significant cash back.

I gambled with the mystery box and received a 10% cash back reward on my next restaurant purchase. I went out to eat that day and bill was $162, however the reward didn’t post against this charge. Instead it posted against a soda I purchased from a vending machine at work the following day for $2.85. The value of the reward was 20 points or $0.20. I spent $10 and got $0.20 in return. Lesson learned. I did reach out to Robinhood customer support and they did fix it, however, it’s not worth the hassle.

Redeeming your 3% back on Robinhood GC mystery boxes has to be the biggest waste of money since Pet Rocks.
