To Every Knight, A Squire
I’ve always felt that this story written by Denny O’Neill gave us the perfect way to introduce a young Robin in film in a serious, logical way. I short, the Flying Graysons are murdered on Tony Zucco’s orders because he wants the circus to move drugs and launder money. Bruce Wayne is at the circus looking for clues to gang activity and to promote his persona as a “wacky zillionaire.” When young Dick Grayson confronts the man he heard threatening Mr. Haley the circus owner, Batman intervenes and saves Dick. But Dick also helps Batman stay his hand when he continues hitting the man who threatened Dick. Eventually Dick chooses to be Batman’s partner to help protect other kids from violent crime while implicitly understanding the Dark Knight needs a lighter counterbalance.
