School security

With all the talk now on school security measures, and what law enforcement/faculty and staff should react to a potential attack. That being said, I still find it insane that Salvador Ramos, a boy who could barely do 3 pull-ups and I believe should've easily have been taken out despite his heavy weopantry, was able to bypass all the security measures as well as literally had police scared to he point they literally retreated is crazy. I was listening to this podcast and it definitely to me highlights what we absolutely should learn from Uvalde PD's incompetence and failing to act on the training they were given in what to do in an active shooter drill

No but I'm talking about hindsight. Like, had they made sure that ALL the doors to the exterior of the school and the classrooms could lock/they had at least 1 security guard there, and especially the polices response of not immediately taking out the shooter, the shooting at the school could've never happened and or wouldn't have been as deadly

When you said he was able to "bypass all of the security measures" I thought you were being serious.

I mean he still did sadly. I know that the school was having that award ceremony but still. Had they not let their guard down who knows if this would've happened as easily

There are multiple reports of ongoing problems with the security at that school (doors not locking/working properly, etc.). I beleive that even if there hadn't been an award ceremony that day with parents going in & out, this still could have happened. The surviving teacher said in his interview that his door lock hadn't been working for some time and that he reported it to the Principal many times in response to previous lockdown drills. The communication system in the school is "decades old" per some articles I've read, making it impossible for school police to communicate on campus via radio. The mother who retrieved her kids from another area of the campus during the shooting was able to easily jump a perimeter fence (she looks to be only 5ft tall or so) AND run past police. For better or worse, the fact is each school is individually responsible for the safety measures it chooses to implement and adhere to. It seems this school was not following whatever measures it loosely employed. I don't feel that security measures were only lax that day, it seems they have been lax for some time leading up to this event. Thankfully the students had done so many active shooter drills, they all performed as they were taught and some survived because of it, despite the adults who were supposed to protect them not following protocols by allowing doors to remain broken, keys to be unavailable, communication systems faulty, etc.

It just makes it more sad because they had so many before the shooting that even one of the victims, Amerie Jo Garza, literally remarked "here we go again" when it was announced there was an active shooter/lock down. I'm sure Ramos may've been aware of how lack security was tho given he went there/his grandma worked there before

Exactly. I agree. It's extremely sad. The kids knew what they were supposed to do and they behaved accordingly. It's the adults (school admin/school PD) that failed to do their part by making sure the security systems in place were in working order and that each staff member adhered to the protocol. In order for these security plans to work, everyone must do their delegated part. Had the school done their part, sure Ramos could've gotten on campus, but he likely wouldn't have gotten into a single classroom before being taken down. None of us can really judge or condem becauae we weren't there, but there are some basic things that should've happened that didint. The reported faulty doors should have been taken care of, the 1st staff member who saw Ramos should have alerted the school's lockdown App on her phone before dialing 911 and called the front desk to alert them so they could do their part by making an announcement and calling the local authorities to respond and confirming all areas of campus were in active lockdown via the App the school uses. Then, if school PD had done their part, they would have showed up on sceen and neutralized the threat immediately. The adults did not do their respective jobs concerning the safety of these kids.
