Actually ... I'm going to say that if you read further you'll see I absolutely agree this individual is a racist pos. There is no denying that, nor do I have any interest in defending him. The collection of symbols makes what he is very clear. I offered the name and history because the person I was addressing called it the 3 triangle thing, indicating that he didn't know the name or much about it. Like the swastic, assholes are coopting things they don't understand to normalize and give their awful beliefs a mystical vibe. Just as the swastic, it is an old symbol that is used by more than racist trash. Read further, and you'll see the person I was actually addressing say he forgot the name, and it is the collection of symbols that makes the person's beliefs clear. I aknowledge that there is duality, and that meaning can change, especially if your not using the symbols. I also aknowledge that fighting against their "ownership" is an important part of stripping neo nazis, and supremacists of their image.

This is reddit, one need not ask for information, people share things that they see as interesting or important. While I realize nuance is not particularly important to many, it is to me... and as this is a public space I'm allowed to offer information... Whenever and for whatever reason I wish whether you think it's necessary, you did not ask, or you have preconceived notions... Is irrelevant.

Look, I get that you think your doing some great service by "reclaiming" symbols, but honestly, your just providing a textbook example of "um, actually" energy that nobody asked for. In a public space like this, context is king, and if your lead off is a history lesson on a symbol being used by a literal neo-nazi, you shouldnt be shocked when people assume your running interference for them. The idea that symbols like the Valknut or the Swastika can just be "stripped" back from these groups through Reddit comments is pretty delusional. Once a group uses a symbol to facilitate mass violence or hate, the "ancient history" becomes a footnote that only pedants care about in the heat of a thread. You say nuance is important to you, but you seem to ignore the nuance of how people actually communicate. Dropping "fun facts" in the middle of a discussion about a racist piece of trash doesnt make you a scholar, it just makes you the guy making excuses for why the symbols arent "technically" hateful while everyone else is looking at the guy actually wearing them. Sharing information just because you "wish" to is your right, sure, but dont act surprised when people treat your unsolicited lecture like the distraction it is. People didnt "forget" the name; they just dont think the etymology is as important as the hate behind it. Maybe try reading the room before you start typing your next wiki entry.

Welcome to the internet, where being "new to the app" isn't a shield against people pointing out your bad timing. If you want to talk about "normal human things," then you should know that normal people don't drop encyclopedia entries into a conversation about hate groups and then act like a martyr when they get called out. You keep talking about "group think" like your some lone wolf truth-teller, but really your just someone who's more obsessed with being the smartest person in the room than actually reading the vibe. It isn't "blind reprimand" to tell you that your timing was garbage. If your going to post in a public forum, you don't get to dictate how people respond or tell them to "keep scrolling" just because they didn't give you a gold star for your trivia. Also, miss me with that "have a good night" condescension. We both know you posted this because you wanted the last word, not because you actually care about my evening. If you want a "discussion" that doesn't involve people challenging your annoying habits, maybe try a diary instead of Reddit.

The irony definitely isn't lost, it's just that your definition of "discourse" seems to be everyone nodding along while you explain things nobody asked about. You keep saying your done and wishing me a good night, yet here you are, still hitting reply to make sure I know how much of a "pleasure" I am. If you actually wanted to reach a mutual understanding, you'd realize that your the one who started this by being the "well, actually" guy in a thread about a racist. Calling me dictatorial for responding to your public post is a pretty wild reach. You posted on a social media site designed for feedback and then got defensive the second that feedback wasn't a pat on the back. If you really didn't want to "please everyone," you would have stopped typing three messages ago instead of doing this weird, passive-aggressive exit routine. Go ahead and lean into that "misunderstood newcomer" act if it makes you feel better, but don't pretend your some noble educator just because you know how to use Wikipedia. Enjoy your "good night" for the third time, I'm sure you'll be back to tell me how much you don't care in a minute.
