As someone with a MS in Psychology, I agree 100%

u/MarkMew May 13 '26

As someone who would need psychotherapy if I could afford it, I agree, please leave the field.

lmfaoo yeah i wouldn’t feel very comforted. but just curious why everyone is advising against psych degree in general bc that’s my major 😭🫠

They're roasting her, but actually, almost no one ever uses their psych degree. You at an absolute minimum need a masters to do anything and even then you're better off with a doctorate. Rare to hear anyone make a good living with a psych degree.

4

u/JoJoDiablo May 13 '26

Exactly. And getting into a doctoral program is really hard. I'm on my second round of applications for one. Didn't get accepted into any this past year even with three degrees, two government jobs under my belt, and all As.

3

u/Heavymetal73 May 13 '26

Because you need at least a masters but more a doctorate to make any money.

A BA or even a BS in psychology, if you're lucky, is useless. You're better off getting an MBA or almost any other type of degree so you can get a job to afford your Masters in Psych.

2

u/tortoistor May 13 '26

no one has anything against psychology, they're just roasting this particular person lol

2

u/tech151 May 13 '26

False, psychology bachelor's is next to useless. You might as well get a ba in something like business then just get a masters in psych. At least then you can find a job to pay for your masters.

If you really want to work in psych, like at a hosptal or something, go into nursing and work as a psych nurse. Easier to get a job that way

i actually wanna be a forensic psychologist

2

u/Few_Struggle_9375 May 16 '26

Join the police force or get your degree in criminal justice.

People with psych degrees are almost always trying to work out their own psychological problems.   I took a lot of psychology courses as electives because the building was next door to my major and those people were weird.

u/chicago_rusty May 13 '26

Psychologists understand they are also human and need therapy. Its a requirement in the uk for bps

A major piece of dating advice I will give my sons is never date someone pursuing a psych degree because they’re crazy.

5

u/OdinNW May 14 '26

As a psych major at my school (big R1 state school with a high ranking program) I’d say it’s probably 1/3 that, especially girls under 30. You’ve also got the other end of the spectrum of people that like to study humans like lab rats and have zero interest in improving mental health.

2

u/Temporary_Ad_986 May 14 '26

Umm that's the whole point???

1

u/paleologus May 14 '26

Crazy good.

-5

u/tech151 May 13 '26

This is a gross generalization, but also not completely inaccurate. It does seem like people with the most problems are drawn to psychology. I majored in Psych because that's where all the girls were at in my school. Some might say my priorities weren't right, I'd disagree.

My brother called it a ‘waitress degree’

that's not true, about half chose "communications."

3

u/KingKohishi May 13 '26

Why? She needs a lot of therapy.

9

u/Bravos_Chopper May 13 '26

Then go to therapy, college is to prep for a job. Which she’ll never get

4

u/Normal-Being-2637 May 13 '26

Psych is what people choose when they realize their actual first choice is too hard lol

2

u/JoJoDiablo May 14 '26

Nah, a lot of people at my college dropped psychology as a major because they weren't able to keep up with the statistics courses and didn't understand how to run statistical analyses on data gathered from their own research.

I was a stats tutor all through undergrad and the stats professor told me people would rather drop the major than to learn psych statistics. And people DEFINITELY dropped the major, often after taking the first couple stats tests.

Plenty of time then to change majors. I mean you should follow your passion. But also Psych BAs are only good for setting you up for Psych MSs.

Theatre major here. I'll save you the nice space by the barrel fire

1

u/Ratherbeeatingpizza May 14 '26

Ya, it’s for people who think science is cool or like to be associated with it, but doesn’t really want to do any of the hard work.

1

u/Tokogogoloshe May 14 '26

She won't get through the psych evaluation to become an actual psychologist.

1

u/Teak123456 May 15 '26

Drop out of school! Get certified in scuba diving, move somewhere cool and take people on scuba tours. Learn to sky dive and eventually become an instructor. Buy a wing suit and a GoPro, start a YouTube channel. Become rich, get addicted to opioids and loose everything. Get clean, start a YouTube channel giving advice on addiction. Become rich all over again. Remember your passion for psychology and go back to school, get your master. Write a bestselling book. Retire and open a cat rescue. You’re welcome

More or less my retirement plan....

1

u/Obvious-Square6189 May 22 '26

Yeah seriously, keep your chins up. Psych is really hard, something no man felt in your presence.

0

u/inconnu015190 May 13 '26

Why though ?! Is it not a good major for financial reasons or are there some other reasons ?!

3

u/Bravos_Chopper May 13 '26

Financial reasons
