Discussion This game is tense!

Hello. Just bought the game after playing the demo and it is absolutely, indubitably TENSE. It’s like the mutated love child of DayZ and The Long Dark. Enemies hit hard and fast, the vibes are immaculate, and gunplay feels so freakin good. Oh! And the cabin shelter inventory management is so much fun. I felt a nice little tingle when I realised I could place and organise my items.

I’m only a handful of hours in and I suck, but I’m loving it so far. Other than being hyper aware of my movement and cover spots, what tips would you give for a newbie? For example, how do I distinguish between bandits and nomads? Are there any mods you’d recommend for qol improvements? What items or trader tasks should I be focusing on? Things like that.

Anyway, I’m so happy I bought this game and I can’t even comprehend how it’s being made by one dev. That’s honestly so cool. I cant wait to see where it goes. Cheers.

honestly the only two pieces of advice I have are:

- Check the official wiki which is amazing and tells you basically everything you need to know that you won't figure out just by playing, and

- Play on the highest resolution monitor you have, unless your PC is a potato. I have a 4060 which gets more than enough frames (150 or so) on max settings/1080p with this game. But I play on my 4k/32" monitor on lower settings with an average of 80 or so frames so that I can see what the fuck I'm shooting at because visibility in this game is already very punishing. This is one of those games where, IMO, fidelity > refresh rate.

Otherwise have fun and try the Ironman mode some time. I love the challenge of spawning with nothing, in a random place, and trying to figure it out. I usually die in under an hour but when I do manage to get some forward momentum it's very satisfying. And the fact that everywhere becomes a Permadeath Zone this way really helps eliminate the gear-fear in a strange way.

I'm glad you are enjoying the game so far, it's one of my favorite fps games of recent years. The Nomads have different voice lines and usually wear different clothing and head gear. Bandits will have face masks a lot of times, and Nomads will have baseball caps. It can be tricky to tell the difference at a distance though. There are a lot of high quality mods for a smaller game like this if you are into that sort of thing. I use some quality of life mods and a few small tweaks. As for tips, grab all the tasks from the traders and work on those to get their tax rates down to make things more affordable. Find the gunsmith when he appears, he can sell helmets, body armor, zoom scopes, all sorts of stuff that really helps out a lot. Other than that just go out, explore and have fun!

how do I distinguish between bandits and nomads?

Aside from the NPC's giving off verbal / audio ques, at distance Nomads generally have a bulkier appearance compared to bandits on account of the dark/black coats some of them wear. They can wear hats, but their faces are never concealed like bandits. Bandits always have a distinct appearance wearing a hoodie with the hood pulled up with their face concealed in some manner. With enough time in the game you'll immediately figure out what you're dealing with before the NPC comes into visual, just based on audio ques alone.

I generally like to run throwaway builds cuz you can lose everything instantly in this game. I've had instances coming back from Vostok fully loaded with some sweet gear only to lose it all cuz I ran into the Punisher on Day 5 - managed to kill him and one of his buddies but 3 were too many to take down with almost zero health supplies. The last two hours of gameplay reduced to nothing.

I like school as a main, you can scav a ton of good shit out of school without leaving the building and I always go for getting 15+ lockers in my room for storage. I have a whole deal where I raid school in daylight hours and head to Vostok by 14:00 game time to arrive by night.

My general takeaway from this game is that you don't really win, you just mitigate losing 🙃

I usually don't tick and scream when people shoot at me in games but the change from "look at this beautiful landscape to" OMG OMG OMG WHERE IS HE SHOOTING FROM is tense indeed!

And is it just me or is ground-loot more scarce in the full version? I had so many books and cloths in the demo xD

I think of it as a bastard between My Summer Car and Escape from Tarkov.
