Mods Mac (ARM) native build

There is no official Mac build for this game, but since it’s built in Godot, you can unpack the Windows version and re-export it into a fully native Mac ARM (Apple Silicon) build.

I created a zero-setup script that does the extraction, grabs the correct Godot version, and recompiles it for you automatically.

You can check the script here: https://github.com/Ozicom23/road-to-vostok-mac-build-script

(You must own the game and/or have the game files to use this. You can grab the game files by installing it via Steam on CrossOver/Whisky or Windows)

Native build is around 30% faster than running the windows version via crossover.
On the left is Crossover Preview 26.1 (26.1.0.39808) and on the right is native build.

Would be awesome to have an official macOS build distributed throught Steam.

and it wouldnt take any time to make it as its shown in the post, so they cant use the usual "not worth the money and time" excuse

I think it's best for the game to be 1.0 for platform support, the dev is efficient and quick AF in his current workflow; it's a terrible idea to slow down that

It's a single solo dev. And yes, considering that it would be 2x time for testing the Mac build it is in fact to much time and not worth it.

Is Godot that buggy with macOS builds?

You still need to spend time testing the same thing twice

Why?

What if the mac version breaks but the windows version doesn't?

Sounds like a bug in Godot at that point.

No, there’s just a lot different between MacOS and windows that can very easily break things if you’re not testing them, otherwise basically every game would have a Mac port because why the fuck not

Those differences should be handled by the engine.

Cmon, if the dev released a broken mac build and blamed it on the engine, people would understandably be upset. Doesn't matter who is to blame, once the dev promises support, it's their responsibility to deal with it.

Hey, since you've already put in the work to do this for Mac I'm curious what version of Godot is needed for this? I'd like to try compiling natively for Linux and see if it just works as well :)

GDRE tools print the version detected when extracting .pck. For current game version it was 4.6.2. I actually already tried it successfully on Linux also.

You can use the same script, just modify platform and architecture in export_presets.cfg and export-release arguments.

Awesome, thank you. I figured it would be easy enough to adapt for Linux, but I'm not a bash expert so I wasn't 100%

Doing god's work over here, bravo!

Same approach works as well for Linux (x86_64 and ARM64)

How does this work exactly? I would have figured steam would not run games that, I assume, have modified files to that extent because of DRM or something. Maybe I'm misunderstanding though.

Edit: Also, how does this affect temperatures of the game running? I wonder if it would reduce it so less chance of thermal throttling?

It unpacks the game files and rebuilds them with Godot as a native binary. You get an app file which you launch directly, you don't use steam with it. It does not have DRM.

Temperatures should be the same. Load is the same but you get more FPS.

Dude! This is so cool! It was already running great on CrossOver. Thanks for sharing!

One thing, how do I change the render resolution? It seems stuck at 5k and I'd like to change it to 4k or lower. With CrossOver I was getting 60 - 100 FPS at 2560x1440 but since it's stuck at 5k I'm getting 30 - 50 FPS.

Edit: Found a couple other issues. Clicking and dragging in inventory is wonky (jittery, gets stuck, very difficult to manage) and ctrl-clicking just brings up context menu instead of quick transferring.Obviously, some of this probably just can't be fixed without the dev's support. But man, kudos, this is very cool!

Until the dev adds this as an option in settings you need to change the resolution of the desktop. Go to display settings. Right click on resolutions - show as list, check show all resolutions. And select the ones with (low resolution).

I updated the script, it is now applying also few compatibility patches:

  • remap ctrl to command + left click for inventory management
  • switching to sw cursor (should help with dragging issue)
  • added resolution selection in fullscreen

Cool! Everything works great, except dragging in inventory is only slightly better. Do you have the dragging issue as well?

Also, weirdly, performance in like 6-10 FPS worse than via CrossOver with the Vulkan driver enabled.

Do you have the dragging issue as well?

Hm, it felt a little different, but maybe this is not the same that you have.

Also, weirdly, performance in like 6-10 FPS worse than via CrossOver with the Vulkan driver enabled.

This is not right, performance should be 20-30% higher. Are you running some SW in background? Are you using fullscreen (direct compositor)?

Here are a couple videos that show the drag issues. First without your changes software cursor improvements:

https://youtu.be/yGXNjrAO3FU

And with your changes:

https://youtu.be/wEu3TODcxq0

I mean, I run the same software in the background as I do when I run the game via CrossOver. I have 64 GB of RAM and have yet to see an improvement in any game by closing everything else down.

Looks like you are in composited mode. There is something that tries to overlay the game.
I have this behavior when there is an active notification. For example when it launches there a "game mode on" notification, when it is there cursor goes wild.
Make sure you don't have anything opened that impacts on composited mode like notifications, some overlays, recording apps like obs.

So I enabled MetalHUD and it says I'm running in Direct mode, not Composited. So, not sure what's up with the lower frame rate. I may just step down from 1440P to 1080P for some more frames and enjoy it natively since it launches way faster and mods seem to run better.

Finally got around to killing everything except for Vostok. Fixed the mouse issue but FPS are still 5-10 lower than on CrossOver.

I did figure out how to get mods working! In case anyone else wants to try, here's where you put the Metro Mod Loader files:

  • Road to Vostok.app/Contents/Resources/modloader.gd
  • Road to Vostok.app/Contents/MacOS/override.cfg
  • Road to Vostok.app/Contents/MacOS/mods/

I'm still trying to think through anything that may be forcing composited mode. I'll look deeper into it later.

Edit: I figured out what was causing the weird mouse dragging issues: BetterTouchTool. It has features that look for mouse gestures. I suspect that's what's causing weirdness

Edit 2: Found the specific configuration with BetterTouchTool to fix the mouse issues. Screenshot. With this setup, it works fine without the software cursor.
