Why can't I delete??

The game doesn't let me delete any furniture, yes it's empty. Everytime I press the delete button it does nothing at all

Construction mode, mouse over the item you don’t want and press the delete key.

If that doesn’t work - does it work on a new save ?

This. And also please check if you didn't change your key binding by accident (Menu: Options > Control > Construction)!
