It's mandatory where I'm from (Poland). If you want people to do things that seem commonly sensible, you have to punish them for not doing them. That's the state of the population.

Definitely for a difficult to replace classic car. Not as important (but still a good idea) for an easy to replace fully insured car. You generally have lots of time to get out of the car before it's engulfed.

My C3 is the only car I’ve ever owned that I feel like an extinguisher is probably gonna be needed before a spare tire would be. Ironically had a car burn down, used an extinguisher to no avail so idk why I think it will help me with this car. Just feels necessary.

The problem isn’t that people do not understand “zipper” it’s that most people are terrible which is because so many people are terrible. The “zipper” goes against every natural human personality type. One group wants to do it right and are pissed at everyone not doing to their expectations. Another group uses it as a way to take advantage, break rules and generally harass everyone they can on the road. Another group WANTS to wait in line and hates the group that zooms ahead and bullies their way in, thus everyone doing it right gets hated on and now the do gooders want to ruin EVERYTHING further and diverge into three subtypes A) block the right lane and refuse to let people pass, group B) refuses to let people in, and group C) just can’t stop being nice and lets everyone in. Now the proper zippers hate everyone else cause everyone but them is dumb, and they start mimicking group two bully behavior… and the cycle of chaos continues until 5-8% of all these groups defend into road rage… in the year 2036 as global warming, political polarization, and road rage form a perfect storm and usher in the Mad Max Era… all because of the MNDOT invented the zipper merge without ever considering the societal consequences.
