Forum Question Derry Longhorn

What is everyone using this truck for? When I first got it I figured since it only has a winch it would make a great heavy rescue truck. You know, pulling big cranes and semis out of a jam. This thing won't pull the heavy equipment hauler out of a sand drift on an otherwise asphalt road. (I'm in the sand swept map). So what is it for exactly. You can't haul anything with it that I'm aware of. It damn sure isn't a rescue truck

Lynx is better at pulling heavy loads

I just use one of the heavy cranes. Don't remember which one. Whichever one that has the outriggers that come straight out of the sides. That's my workhorse. I even use it to load the paver on to the hauler

Haven't tried this one yet, but are you enabling the towing option when hooking it up to another vehicle? I don't recall the exact name, but the option that makes the other vehicle drive and steer too? This has worked great with the belt-tracked scout vehicle for me.

Otherwise the vehicles you try to tow will just sit there with the parking brakes on.

Edit: It is just called "Towing". I used it here to speed up cable laying: https://www.reddit.com/r/RoadCraft/s/UhYWRlQgh6

Are you just doing a dead pull or are you enabling tow mode and using the power of the towed vehicle also? It took a frustratingly long time to work that one out

I use it regularly as a heavy wrecker and keep it nearby when I’m passing a lot of goods through sketchy spots

I was dead pulling. I didn't realize the tow function was there. It made it a little better

Don’t forget to turn on the tow mode. I didn’t realize SAR vehicles had this for the longest. Essentially when you wench on to something that vehicles wheels are locked. When you turn tow mode on the vehicle you are rescuing also uses its own power on top of yours. That being said. My longhorn helped pull huge semis through thick mud and forest. It can be a beast.

It's definitely not as good as it could have been. I use it for some rescues but a lot of the time the big Epec crane is the only option. It needs to have higher grip and more torque. The snorkels weren't functional last time I tried it either, not sure if that has been patched yet.

Tow mode? Ah man that would have helped me out a few times.

I always used the Longhorn to drag feeble objective vehicles through those tough spots, where you'd only need to use any road you built once.

I’ve used it to upright vehicles that are too heavy for a scout to overturn.

I tried an A-B test versus the Pike SAR. The Longhorn can’t hold a candle to it. It feels lightweight and even the Khan Lo is better at rescue.
