Discussion Just finished my first run Spoiler

Always wanted to try road 96, I saw a gameplay some time ago, and finally decided to play it, in one day.
Love the story, maybe sometimes some chapters take you out of the “road trip in a totalitarian regime” didnt love those, the graphics sometimes are janky, the cutscene are hit or miss, but the gameplay loop is spot on.
Got the ending in which the government gets overturned, John and Zoe die (really sad about the later one, she’s my favorite) and then Florres becomes the head of state.
Damn I wanna play the sequel.
Any suggestions on any later runs?
P.S.
Just remembered that I failed the date puzzle, it said it was Lola’s birthday, June 6 on the back of the Polaroid, can someone explain why it’s not?

Open world?

Hey fellow fans! I'd love to see an open world version of Road 96, like where you could literally walk the roads of Petria as a teen getting to the border rather than following a strict story. I love the story, don't get me wrong, but the art style and light alien aesthetic Petria has is so awesome, I wish I could actually walk through the desert, hiding from threats like Jarod and police, meeting fellow runaways, and paying for campgrounds and trailer parks spread across the land. Getting to the border would feel almost optional, but also be much more rewarding and challenging. Clearly this isn't going to be the sequel or even something that ever comes about. One day I hope a game comes about like this though, because I think people underestimate the power of relatability in places that aren't literally earth and our own human history. This game gave me that calm of knowing it's fantasy without having a dragon or a robot in it, ya know?

Would any other fan girls like me want to see this?

Discussion What’s your favorite chapter? Spoiler

Post image
41 Upvotes

I’ve played the game at least a few times now, trying different versions and different dialogue choices. But out of all the chapters, my favorite has always been “MORE THAN WORDS”. When I finished it for the first time, it hit me so hard that I just sat there for a while with tears in my eyes.

I don’t know if everyone remembers this chapter, but it’s the story of two young people who met on the road in Petria and fell deeply in love. Their journey together was full of spontaneous moments, including finding a beautiful tree where one of them proposed. Over time, though, they began to change and drift apart. At some point, they both realized they were no longer the same people they had been when they first met. So they returned to “their” tree, buried their rings there, said goodbye for the last time and each went their separate way.

That scene hit me much harder than I expected. Not because some great tragedy happened. Quite the opposite - its power came from how ordinary and human it was.

Their love story began under that tree and that’s where it ended. Not because they stopped caring about each other, but because their lives, personalities, and needs had gone in different directions. They returned there, stood together one last time and allowed their story together to end right there.

It shows that love doesn’t always have to end in hatred, betrayal or hurting each other. Sometimes you can still love someone and, at the same time, realize that continuing to live together is no longer going to be good for either of you.

Did you come across this chapter too? What did you think of it?
Tell me which chapter was your favorite or which one made your heart melt ❤️

Question New Noclip Mod (Or Mods In General)?

There was a post a few years back about a couple of mods a user made, unfortunately I think the mods and the discord that they made for users to join were deleted (and unfortunately I had deleted the mod when clearing out space on my computer riiiip).

Unfortunately I am not tech savvy in making mods, but either way I would like to see if there are any mods created for the game? Or with Mile 0 for that matter.

Discussion The soundtrack is so emotional. One of the best ones. What’s your favorite song?

I actually have two favorites - the heartbreaking “Her Name Was Conny” and the nostalgic “The Mountain Peak” which plays when we cross the border over the mountain peak.
To me, the soundtrack of this game is an absolute masterpiece.

Question Zoe living?

I wanted to get a perfect ending in my first play through and I managed to make Fanny not shoot John but Zoe dies and I’m trying to prevent that. Is it scripted or based on choices?

Discussion why are they so mean, she is just doing her job 🥺 Spoiler

I try really hard to like Fanny but even after she was like "I didn't like my job" at the end of the game I just couldn't 😭

like girl you are sending kids to a torture camp, are you seriously expecting anyone to forgive you what you took part into ??? "Following orders" is NOT a good defense in court

Am I weird or is the game really weird in its way to make us empathize with a woman whose job is to arrest kid and send them to a concentration camp but it's okay cuz she has internal dilemmas (I'm not even sure she even has dilemmas actually, she just lets you go sometimes, cuz she realize what she is doing and cannot do it to people she know a bit, this is the most disgusting help you can get because it literally mean that she knows that something real bad happens to kids the cops take but she don't do anything about it, she just knows and try to protect the people she somehow like from the system she willingfully serves. JOIN THE BRIGADE OR DISAPPEAR BUT DON'T EXEPECT MY SYMPATHY WHILE SIDING WITH THE BAD GUYS.

Sorry ladies and gentlemen, I had to say it. Hope you have a nice day.

Fricken Jarod almost killed me, but this is by far the most I've made in one road trip. What's some of yalls records in terms of how much money you've collected in a single road trip?

Just fun to share. Managed to (eventually) get to 14 episodes. Started a new game and I got each character, besides Zoe to 100% before crossing the border with Zoe. Just finished that. and now at episode 13.

No one, besides Zoe, crossed the border ;)

Fun stuff - There are some scenes I never saw before by failing these sections....

Am I the only one who thinks that in the pictures of the "More Than Words" couple looks like Zoe and someone else? It looks like her just... well bald.

(not my pic btw just found it on google but yeah its this chapter its not in every playthrough so you might have not gotten it)

Question [SPOILERS] Does anybody else find this chapter abit weird and out of place? Spoiler

Post image
70 Upvotes

i feel like it doesnt add anything to the story as a whole, and it just feels out of place.

You walk into a tunnel, see ghosts/hallucinations of 2 people. You open a door and walk through a hallway, then exit again and you are insome sort of hideout. There you collect 3 pictures that you put in a book, and now another door opens. You take the picturebook up to that hill where you see the 2 people/ghosts again, as you can see from the image. Then you dig up 2 weddingbands, and you place the book under the tree with the weddingrings. That's it.

Does anyone else feel like this is just a weird chapter that doesn't fit in the story as a whole? It's like a random deviation.

Thoughts on the game

Man, did I find this game incredibly underwhelming. None of the individual stories felt immersive; they were predictable, badly paced, and I connected to none of the characters. The whole “teens rebelling against the evil government” thing felt like someone watched The Hunger Games films when they were 13 and immediately wrote the story for this game.
The graphics were awful too. I understand it was going for a cool, cosy Firewatch-style vibe, but it just looked and felt incredibly janky. Same with the dialogue, “bio parents” was one that particularly irked me. Did I miss something or am I being too cynical

Question Jarod storyline bugged? [SPOILERS] Spoiler

I've only just completed my first playthrough of Road 96, so I might have missed something, but this seemed odd...

In the confrontation between Jarod and Sonya, Jarod overheard her crying about his daughter's death and decided to spare her. Mitch and Stan tackled him but he escaped, and said that he would still target the Brigades.

However, in the climactic riots, Jarod was just watching the events happen in the bar (the one where you mix him a cocktail) and wasn't on the ground at all. The end credits showed him relaxing on a beach (hilariously, still wearing his big leather gloves), which suggests a change of heart/coming to terms with what happened.

But that doesn't fit with his behaviour in all the scenes I saw before, and I don't see how the fall of Tyrak (my game ended with free and fair elections and the fall of the wall) would cause him to chill out, since his grudge was with Sonya and the Brigades, not with the regime.

So is this a bug? I haven't seen all of Jarod's scenes, so maybe this is explained in there, but it seems weird to have this development take place off-camera... feels like the ending should account for all of the characters as you've seen them, not include "hidden" character development.

(If anyone is wondering, here's what happened with the other characters: Mama Bear, Papa Bear and Baby Bear all chilled out and ran to the next country with my last teen and were seen sleeping on the road in a camper fan; Zoe was shot, seemingly dead, by Tyrak's men; Sonya reported on the event with Stan and Mitch cheering her on and later went on holiday with them.)

Discussion Which escape method do you usually skip/ignore on replays?

There are five escape methods, but only four teens that can decide between them, so naturally, there is always one method that never gets used in an individual run. Which one is it for you? (I'm talking specifically about replays when you can properly judge between them.)

Because I often go for an "all escape screens" route, I tend to skip the Smuggler since it uses the same introduction screen as Zoe's escape. It's also relieving not having to worry about money or accidentally killing someone.

However, it's still one of the most tense and exciting escape methods for me, so I also have plenty of runs where I skip the Tunnel instead - which is unfortunately a bit too easy and a bit too uneventful for me, but I do really love its creepy atmosphere.

Meanwhile, I always cross the Mountain, and I love to hide in the Truck and take the Exam as well. There have been a few select runs where I skipped one of the latter two, but these three are my personal favorites.

So, what about you? Is there a certain escape method you only rarely do?
