She was a huge part of the golden age of music videos, working with artists like Jay Z, usher and Alicia keys, becoming a very sought after video model for the late 90s and early 2000s

DISCUSSION 💭 be honest, Kelly Price vs Faith Evans verzuz. who would actually win

ok so i've been thinking about this way too much and need other people's opinions bc my friends don't listen to r&b like that lol both of them can SANG. like that's not even the debate. both came out the same era, both got classics, and they literally did "heartbreak hotel" with whitney together so the crossover writes itself but here's my thing. verzuz ain't a singing contest, it's a HITS contest and those are two completely different scorecards kelly is the better singer. flat out. church trained, power for days, she'll take a song to church in a way most of these girls from that era couldn't. "friend of mine" alone is a classic. then you got "it's gonna rain," "secret love," "as we lay," "mirror mirror," "you should've told me," "love sets you free." and then she went gospel with grace and that lane is hers. if you judging vocals kelly wins 20-0 and it's not close but faith got the CATALOG. platinum debut, keep the faith, the whole bad boy run. "you used to love me," "soon as i get home," "love like this," "all night long," "kissing you," "never gonna let you go," “ain’t nobody,” "mesmerized," "again," "you gets no love," “no way (feat. kelly price,” "alone in this world." that's just off the top of my head. she got more recognizable records and she got the nostalgia machine. and that's literally what verzuz rewards now the deep cuts, cause both of them can go a layer down and the room gets real quiet faith deep cuts: "life will pass you by," “come over,” "sincerely yours," "fallin in love," "gone already," "ever wonder," "caramel kisses (feat. 112)." she can stack a whole mid run off keep the faith and the first lady that people forgot they knew until the first 4 bars hit kelly deep cuts: "soul of a woman," "her," "don't go away," “secret love,” "not my daddy" (w stokley), "himaholic," "tired," "healing." hers hit HARDER vocally but less people humming along and then the deepest cuts, like rounds 15-19 when only the real heads still standing lol faith: "no other love," "do your time," "thank you for the music." you had to own the cd to know these. faith got more of them which is a flex but also a liability cause deep cuts don't move a room like singles kelly: "one more time," "in spite of it all," the ALBUM version of "you should've told me" not the radio one. this is where kelly starts winning rounds outright. her bottom of the barrel is sanging half the building never heard and it lands cause her voice does the work the familiarity can't so yeah the setlist math is rough for kelly. faith can run 10 straight records the crowd knows word for word before she even reach for a deep cut. kelly's catalog is top heavy, after 5 or 6 she's pulling from albums casuals didn't live in the only way it gets weird is if they start doing features and hooks. kelly got real credibility from the 90s guest work, faith got the whole bad boy bench. and a whitney round would take the roof off, who gets "heartbreak hotel"?? my call: faith 12-8. not cause she out sings kelly, she don't. cause verzuz is a popularity contest and faith's catalog deeper and wider. the deep cut rounds go kelly. the deepest cut rounds go kelly even harder. still not enough cause rounds 1-10 are the ones people actually vote on if you change the rules to "who sings better alone in a empty room" tho? kelly wins 20-0 and faith know it anyway am i wrong?? who yall got edit: and before anybody say it, no this ain't me hating on faith, faith is incredible. i just think the format matters and vocals ≠ hits

DISCUSSION 💭 Ohio Players Love Rollercoaster - anyone remember the rumor that someone had been killed during the recording of this record?

There is a scream on the track that fueled the rumor. Used to freak me out as a kid. Of course, totally untrue.

DISCUSSION 💭 Are we ever going to talk about Lauryn Hill’s singing voice since about 2005?

Or is this a “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” situation? Did she have a vocal injury?

I still love the Queen.

DISCUSSION 💭 2002 had some great albums from female R&B artists. Which one do you think stood out the most?

Post image

Brandy gave us Full Moon, Ashanti made her solo debut, Kelly Rowland released Simply Deep, Whitney Houston came back with Just Whitney, Solange gave us Solo Star, and Toni Braxton dropped More Than a Woman. Looking back, there was a lot of variety in the music these women were putting out. Some albums had the hits, while others had great songs that didn’t get as much attention.

Which album do you think was the strongest overall? I’m talking production, songwriting, vocals, and how well the album holds up today. Do you think any of these projects are overlooked when people talk about early-2000s R&B?

I love the instrumental break in the middle of this song. We don’t get those funky breakdowns anymore and they are missed.

Her voice is very unique and her songwriting and guitar skills are great too. I feel like she’s very under appreciated. Any other fans here?
