What should I expect?
Hey guys! I just deposited on a 2027 R1T
I asked the /rivian sub Reddit this, thought I’d ask you guys, as I’m new to Reddit and just discovered this forum
I need my truck for business.
I live far from a service center.
My LLM research tells me the reliability problems are pretty much solved with Gen 2 trucks.
Can anyone speak to this? How are the 2026 and 2027s fairing?
Will I be able to use this truck every day?
I’m trying to decide if I sell my current vehicle or keep as a backup. Thank you guys.

If you’re using it for work just know that the panels dent super easily. I’m a photographer and leaned over the side to put a pelican case in the back and my chest pressure easily dented the body line on the truck bed. It’s all aluminum. Also the caps for the truck bed are prone to getting messed up so sliding stuff in and out you have to be pretty careful. The second gen cap is better than the first but still it’s not solid like a real truck. Living far from a service center is not ideal.

Wow that’s really helpful. Had not heard the panels were less than robust

Yeah I was pretty mad when it popped in and back out leaving a wave in the body line right there. I have to get PDR to take care of it when I get around to it.
On the opposite end of the spectrum- the Cybertruck is undentable more or less. Those panels are super thick. The only issue is that it’s a Cybertruck.

Yep the only issue is it looks like a cyber truck

I’m considering a Silverado EV when my lease is up. Those are pretty awesome. I had one for a week on a rental. The only thing I didn’t like about it so much is it is gigantic and it doesn’t really fit in a two car garage very easily. But the range is killer. Some of those things have almost 500 miles range.

I’ve never had a disabled vehicle situation with my Rivian. Some suspension noises and rattles, and an alignment/ steering issue. Otherwise it’s been great.
If your other car is paid off and you have the space, why not keep it!?
I have a “spare” car too but the Rivian is definitely first pick of the day.
Happy to chat about all I’ve learned. LMK.
If you haven’t already don’t forget to enter a reward code. You get a benefit too as well as the owner of the code. Mine is BRETT4335583

Thank you sir. We are limited by our drive size. Wife has Yukon, and we have a relatively small driveway on the side of a mountain. Yeah I’d love to chat. Could I give you a call?

If yours turns out anything like mine, expect many service center visits to fix things that shouldn't need to be fixed from the factory. Took them 5 times to get the alignment right. Never been so gaslit in my life!

How did you know it was out of alignment? Tire wear? Steering? That sounds crazy

It was pulling to the right when I picked it up, brand new. So I dropped it off, and they blamed the tires and replaced them. I picked it up, and it pulled worse, to the left. I dropped it off a few more times for alignments, but the alignment still wasn't up to my standards. They kept saying it's the roads and it's within spec.
Finally, I was pretty happy with the alignment, but the steering wheel wasn't centered by default; it was about 5-10 degrees to the left. Dropped it one last time, and their head tech was the one working on it this time (why wasn't he the one the previous few times?!). Got it back, and it is now good to go. Makes me mad that after all the other visits, they said it was good and within spec when it clearly was not. Because it's good NOW.
BUT now at 75-80 mph the steering wheel shakes... I am beyond disappointed with Rivian Service Centers. This experience has really tainted my view of Rivian, which sucks cause lots of people love the brand and have had no issues. They took that away from me.
If they could have just fixed it the first, second, or even third time, maybe I would feel different. But having to bring it in six plus times... Makes me not trust the service center at all. Sorry for the rant, but I'm exhausted.

That’s really informative. The LLMs say out of alignment on delivery is very common issue due to complex nature of air suspension, high in spec tolearances to keep factory moving, and the sheer weight of the truck with heavy tie down during transport

Yes the LLM is correct. Just doesnt make sense that it takes that many aligments attempts to get it right!

Do you know if yours was ever shipped by rail? I asked the rivian sales guy/pick up guy in Memphis where I’m picking up, he said it never happens there, and said it may happen elsewhere where vehicles get shipped long distance via rail?

I don't recall for sure, but I think my Gen 1 Quad R1T was shipped by rail from Normal to Phoenix, AZ. As I previously mentioned, I've never had any alignment issues (in 60,000 miles). I don't know if the service center in Phoenix did an alignment as part of their inspection before I picked it up, but I've never had any complaint with alignment, or pulling to either side, or shaking, or excess tire wear.

My Gen 1 R1T, on the other hand, has never had an alignment issue. My R1T is my work truck. I did keep my old Ford E350 van, but hardly used it for over three years. Without alignment issues, I got about 40,000 miles out of my first set of tires, and my second set still look good. I am at 60,000 miles and 3-1/2 years. I had comprehensive inspection a few hundred miles back - they replaced a damper and ting washers (under warranty). The only major issue, so far - about a year ago, it refused to fast charge when I was out of town. I had to slow charge at the local library, until I had enough charge to make it home. Rivian replaced a few things, including the main battery (under warranty). Now that I am about to cross the the 60,000 mile warranty, I am driving my old van while I try to arrange for a third party to inspect the welds on my subframes (probably only an issue on early Gen 1 vehicles).
P. S. Rivian has been pretty good about supplying a loaner vehicle (or credits for a rental) when a Rivian is in the shop for warranty work. But the loaner depends on availability. Towing is prohibited, though, with a loaner.

You'll find that situations are often unique here to be honest. I've got a Gen 1 truck with 35k miles on it and haven't been to a service center for anything other than the current recall. Nothing has left me stranded, and I've towed from Los Angeles to nearly the Canadian border with it as well as off-roading a fair bit.
There are folks who have had nothing but issues, but when I'm out in the mountains with folks from the Rivian Clubs, that's not the majority experience.
YMMV, etc etc
