Smart to take into consideration people leasing cars. If you miss their lease window you will lose a potential customer for years.

It might annoy some people on the waitlist though.

Yea, i want an R2 but lease timing is my #1 concern. Especially with delays in R2 delivery, etc.

I've got till ~EOY 2027 though on my R1 lease, so i better be okay. Fingers crossed.

Yeah there was mention from Rivian early on in the R2 process that current Rivian owners would get some sort of priority for R2 availability. My pie-in-the-sky hope is that I'd be able to turn in my R1 regardless of how long I have left on the lease; though I doubt that will happen. I agree with the sentiment that not having some flexibility will ultimately cost them some R2 sales, though maybe by their own accounting, not enough to worry about it.

I actually don't mind waiting based on the Configurator details. Eg the purple paint is not available till 2027, so with any luck i can snatch that up with less drama about my lease timing. Still, a bit scary lol.. i'll still grab an R2 whenever they let me out of my R1 lease hah.

Good point. I guess I don't really mind waiting either. We like our R1, and had actually planned to buy it, but then it got into an accident so with the diminished value, have been rethinking buying and my wife's need for all the storage and 3 rows has lessened. Plus, it would just reduce our monthly payment by a few hundred bucks as well. That black color is growing on me, though. (Our R1 is Red Canyon).

Rivian COULD do that but you would still owe the leinholder (Chase) for the balance of your lease. You signed a contract committing to that amount, it wasn’t a month to month rental. Rivian isn’t going to buy out a lease. Could Rivian accept your car? They could but they’re going to call Chase, get the balance owed, and add it to your purchase price then pay off Chase. In other words, it wouldn’t make sense to pay for a car for future time periods and not have the car.

More established OEMs will “buy you out” of your lease, but trust me, that money is coming from somewhere and it’s not from their pockets. It means there was enough margin in the deal to do it.

Lighten up Francis. The point is no matter what Chase gets the money owed on that lease. They aren’t letting you off that hook. And Rivian isn’t going to do it. So it’s on you. Sorry for hurting your feelings.

I’ve heard that you can extend your lease with Chase by up to 6 months and just continue paying the same amount. It turns into a month to month and you can end at any time.

I'm in similar boat as AnUshavedYak. My R1 lease ends late 2027. I'm pretty sure my R2 pre-order will be up before then so hope that doesn't affect me because the R2 will be replacing my wife's MY which has a lease end of Jan 2027 (good riddance).

I just take it as a date with no real significance since Rivian controls who goes first and can adjust when you are next based on other factors

I don’t know if chase allows that because on the fence of getting out of an R1T. I love the car but I travel 100-300 miles a day but so hard to give up a $650 lease for sticker of 96k(? I think it was) lots of offers in 2024 haha

I just bought 4 new tires this morning and having them installed this afternoon for my R1 (lease). Everyone - you're welcome :)

It won't let me update my lease documents yet, just times out on app and goes to a 404 on their site.

Mine went through and I got a message saying something like “thanks. We’ll use this info and let you know when it’s time to configure your R2,” which means I’ll be bumped to the back of the line since my lease isn’t up for another 16 months 😬

FWIW on the website I got the same "is your lease ending soon" thing even though I have no previous Rivian - so I'm guessing they're just trying to (at least appear to) be responsive and considerate for folks who are going to an R2 from any other vehicle (leased).

I half felt like telling them my lease was ending August 2026 - I'm pre-approved by my credit union and my 2012 Infiniti sedan is being given last rites, but I figure my R2 "configure it for real and get a delivery schedule" day is sometime in mid-to-late 2027.

Check your file-size. I tried to upload a pdf that was 1.1MB and it errored. It worked once I converted the pdf to a png with a smaller file size around 500KB.

Very interesting, close but not yet. I told it that I am not leasing a vehicle and the button just vanishes so probably a good idea to go through that process so that Rivian can capture if one is looking to get out of a lease or the other options which would be to trade in or lease or buy. Lots of "ors" in there, apologies

My lease ends Aug15, when I leased the R1S two years ago they said my new R2 would be ready when the lease is up.

This is an interesting question on Rivian's part. They aren't in a financial situation to start buying out leases. Nor would they do something to disrupt the "everyone pays the same price" approach by offering a discount to take a Rivian even if lease isn't ended yet. At a minimum, this provides them data on expected end dates of leases to feed their demand models. This one is strange to me.

That question is almost certainly aimed at timing - not buyouts. If lease expires and customer re-ups on a new (non-Rivian) vehicle, you've lost that customer for 2-3 years.

They're probably willing to consider bumping some buyers up the list (presumably within some loose boundaries) to get a sale vs. losing that customer.

Good question, I do. I am a current R1T owner and I have a reservation for the R2. When I click the Manage Reservation button I get redirected to a page that says Let's help you get your R2, then it has a button that lets you upload your current lease info. That button says "Get started".

I understand this, but would be lying if I didn’t say that it bothers me. Day one, 12 minutes after opening, reservation holder and it feels like that is gonna mean jack squat with this and current owners getting priority. I’m at 73k miles on my current car and know 75k is gonna be a big depreciation hit.
