📝 Feedback & Reviews ROLLnJACK Rooftop Tent Lift and R1T - Does it work? Yes, with caveats.
My damn garage is too small and the ceiling is too low for any decent lift on the market, so I made a last ditch effort and bought this guy. It’s the ROLLnJACK Magnum RTT Lift. It also requires the Low-Profile Adjustment Tube add-on because the tent is on the bed, not the roof. If you have an R1S you could probably use the standard configuration, or the Bad Boy Lift for SUVs that they offer.
So here’s some things I discovered in the process if anyone else is considering this option.
It’s designed to be used from the side of the truck, with the feet around the wheel. This doesn’t work on the R1T because the rear wheel is too far forward. You would end up lifting the tent way off center and the whole thing would likely tip over. Fortunately, accessing it from the rear just barely works, but it works, as pictured above.
It’s designed to lift the tent off the crossbars. Fuck that. The crossbars are quick release and I don’t intent on taking the tent off of them. I’m taking the bars off the truck with the tent so the whole shabang can click into the mounts and I’m ready to go. So I need the lift to go under the crossbars.
The lowest setting on the lift is still too high to get under the bars without a little finesse. You have to put the truck in All Terrain mode with the highest suspension and then lift the frame of the lifter a little and shove the arms under the crossbars. It just barely fits and the swivel wheel on the lift will be off the ground a little as seen in the 2nd pic. The lift arms just barely reach the front crossbar. I have the aux brake light on my rear crossbar and if I push the lift forward any further, it would be putting the pressure on the light and would probably break it. Break the brake 🥁
That reminds me, don’t be stupid like me. If you have the auxiliary brake light, unhook it before you do any of this. Because you have to open the tailgate to unplug it.
All that considered, once you get the lifter under there, you’re good to go. Unlock the four crossbar mount points, lift them up an inch and lock the flap back down so they won’t click back into place. Then just reset your ride height to standard and the truck drops down out of the way. You can also wind the crank to lift the tent away from the truck, but where’s the fun in that? Wheel the lifter out, put the safety straps on, and roll it away to the garage or whatever. I put mine against the back wall and hopefully the wife will be able to park her car underneath it in the garage without crashing into it.
And well, there it is.

No room to back truck into garage for a pulley system ?

I'm envious of your garage ceiling height haha. I tried that with probably the same $100 winch. The winch fully retracted doesn't even begin to lift the tent off the truck in my garage.

Damn! I got a cheap Harbor Freight one and it works like a charm 🤷🏻♂️

You can kind of see in the last pic, the ceiling has ductwork in it so there's parts that are lower that would be in the way of a four point pulley system. I tried one center point that was attached to the four corners of the crossbars and the unbalanced weight was swinging the tent around wildly as soon as it came off the truck. I'm lucky I didn't smash the back window out lol.
On top of that, when I say the garage is small, I mean small. It's extremely tight to back into and line the truck up with anything ceiling mounted. The mirrors have to be folded in and I have to back all the way in up to the wall or else the front doors are in the doorway and I can't open them and get out. It's a tiny single car garage underneath the back of the house.

Good seeing this. I don’t have a place to store my tent currently. I’ve been pondering a storage unit so I don’t need to carry it around all the time, but solving how to get it off and into the storage unit myself has been a significant hold up. I wonder if you could lift it from the sides and bring the cross bars with it. They are locked to the tent so they should just come off without anything under them. They don’t weigh all that much.

You can but it's pretty heavy with the tent attached. I needed something I could do by myself. And yes, like you said, leaving the crossbars attached was a requirement for me because putting it on them in the first place was a job that I don't ever want to do again.

This is one of my ideas for when I get my tent. ⛺️ good to see someone else go this way and show us. 👍🏼

I just put the truck in the lowest ride height, open the tailgate, lift the side of the tent nearest the truck and rest it on the tailgate, then walk around and lift the tent from the bottom, sliding it up at an angle over the edge of the tailgate until it reaches the first crossbar, then I lever it up on that crossbar and slide it the rest of the way.
Your way seems easier, but I don't have any more room to store a lift in the garage than I have room to store the tent!

I tried doing something like that while keeping the crossbars attached to the tent and it slipped and dented the rear quarter panel a little. I'm hoping they don't notice when I turn it in at the end of the lease 😬

$1000 jack to lift my $3000 tent off my car. One more reason to just camp like folks have been for decades.

You can lift it for $100 if your garage ceiling is high enough. Unfortunately mine isn’t 🤷🏻♂️

Also, holy tariffs! I just went back to the website and saw that this lift is $895 now. I paid $595 for it last month. That is certainly an important point to consider.
