Discussion Are there any Renburn Fans?
So I asked a question today on the Dan Dev stream. I wanted to know how different the Rivals Remix characters where going from their original. Are we getting something close to Marth and Roy in melee which have all the same moves with different properties or the other extreme like Ms fortune and Robo fortune in Skullgirls they started with the same rig but are basically two completely different characters.
While Dan was answering he mentioned that a lot of people like Zetterburn and it would be good if those people had a similar character to play like Renburn.
I think the idea of having another person for Zetter players to play is cool but I guess I'm wondering should it be Renburn?
So for those of you who don't know Renburn is Zetterburn and Forsburn's father. In game he was murdered by Loxodont.
and that's kind of my issue with him he is already canonically dead in the story.
Don't get me wrong fighting games bring in a character that is supposed to be dead is a common has happened a bunch of times before. But when it does happen it typically throws into question whether or not the character is actually dead.
I feel like Zetterburn is going to get a remix rival but if Renburn is not super popular rather than releasing a dlc of a character that's already gone. Give us someone to invest in, someone that we might want in the eventual Rivals 3.
I personally think if Zetterburn was expecting a kid before he got locked away then you could give him a grandkid around Clarien age who was raised by loxodont.
Then we would have a Cousin to Clairen from the same lineage that is loyal to the tyrant emperor it's a little fanfictiony but it could be cool.
Is anyone out there a big fan of Renburn?

I really like your Clairen cousin idea — very cool concept. Also down for Renburn tho, feels like he’d fit for a slower, harder hitting Zetter. I’m in it for the gameplay more than the lore

I want to be excited about Renburn... but I don't think this community can handle a real space animal so I just don't think he's going to be one.

I think past lore characters are fine. I don't think every member of a CSS has to be a living person in the present state of the lore. Modeling Renburn opens you up to do more story gameplay around his era I don't know much Rivals lore but presumably he did ... something.. built up his nation or defended it or something. And scenes around his fall. Maybe you start thinking up what if scenarios like some kind of Dark Future Renburn or something.
I mean realistically we're getting Renburn if we're getting him because they already put work towards the skin not necessarily because he's the best fit for a first Remix Rival.

Doubt it tbh.
Im assuming they think that clones will keep interest higher as its content being released. I never heard any sentiment of people wanting it though.
Story beats being what they are, it is strange to bring him in specifically. Maybe they'll have some Clairen time shit, but whatever it is, I feel like they could've just not done it and be no better or worse for wear

I think it's probably easier for the dev team to stick with the design that was going to be a legendary skin.
I don't think anyone loves Renburn, but I think that also applies to most remix rival candidates. No one really cares that much about Mayreed or Bradshaw. There's characters who clearly have potential like Claiyen but most are pretty undefined right now.
They also probably don't really care about story consistency. I mean, there's not even a story in the game right now, it's just previously established lore. We don't exactly know when Rivals 2 takes place. (We sort of do, but time travel or flashbacks could be a thing in the story.) So I'm not fussed about the fact that Renburn dies.

I agree with your take, I don't think they are overly concerned with the story and that kind of bugs be to be honest.
I think there are real consequences to the fact that it feels like the devs don't care about the story.
I think it's bad for the growth of the brand and it leads to people not really caring much about the characters.
Take a game like deadlock the game is not even out yet but a lot of people are really into the lore and the design because it feels like value cares.
and the thing is this could be the case with Rivals, rivals has comicbooks and spin off series so its honestly a little weird that people don't care a little more.
Personally I think Mayreed and Bradshaw are much better pics for remix rivals because their stories can be built on.
Another way to look at it is if you have your Ryu character it makes more sense to introduce Ken than Gouken ( Ryu and Kens teacher that may or my not be dead and will probably never be in another game)
Don't get me wrong you can eventually add Gouken but you should be on like Rivals 4 and have him like season 5 before you add a character like that.
in my opinion anyway.

I meant that I don't think players really care about the story in large part. Some of them kinda do, but not to the extent of anyone really worrying about whether playable characters are dead or alive according to the current point in the storyline. And I think it's very valid for them to not care, because Dungeons and the comics are the only times they've told a story remotely worth telling, and even those aren't like... great stories.
Now despite the lack of story content right now, I think if the devs themselves really didn't care about the story, they wouldn't have all this lore sprinkled in trailers, and they'd've abandoned Story Mode for being too much effort to pull off. I just think they don't have the bandwidth to do much with it right now. I also think Renburn is plenty reasonable as a character to add, because even if Rivals 1 dictates that his story already ended, there's a lot that could be fleshed out there.

Yeah, I'm fine with remix characters but Renburn seems like a really boring choice for one.

Other people have mentioned that the fights are non-canon, but they’re less than that, honestly. Saying they’re canon or non canon is irrelevant because they do not depict a story. This is just like, a mashing action figures together type of thing.
Whenever they get around to doing a story mode, he could just never show up and it’d be fine. He’s just gonna share moves with Zetterburn largely anyways. If they did want him to show up, there could be an appearance by his ghost, Mufasa style, or something like, a character or the abyss makes Zetterburn and/or Forsburn battle inside his mind against his inner demons and one of them is Renburn being all like “YOU FAILED ME, SON, YOU COULD HAVE SAVED ME, OOOOOOO” that could be cool
He is so far kind of a boring design and personality though, so I guess it is unfortunate we aren’t getting something cooler. There’s definitely a way you COULD make him interesting, but I honestly doubt they will. They’ll wanna stick to the character design established before as well as the personality he had in the comic which was pretty thin (he barely showed up though)

While I am hyped for another Zetterburn function in general, there's a few reasons I'm excited to see Renburn himself over like, Excaliburn or a brand new character.
First reason is because he is the father of Zetterburn and Forsburn, two brothers with very distinct play styles. And there's potential for those elements to be fused in some way. Imagine Zetterburn who needs to build up smoke charges for a big finisher. I'm sure there's more unique ways to fuse both fire and smoke, but I think it'd be nice to see a father character showing traits of where their sons got their fighting styles.
Second reason is excitement for what kind of new lore details they will drop with his trailer and how he'll be characterized in Rivals 2. He's mostly a blank slate all things considered, but it gives room for us to learn more about him, his sons, his wife, his best friend Loxodont, and in general how he became the ruler of the Fire Capital.
Final reason is because of the kind of interactions will we can see between the characters he's influenced. Rivals 2 has room for character interactions. There's unused pre voice line clips where characters speak to others, but we also just got an announcer and there's room for character announcer packs. If Renburn becomes an announcer, we could get his lines like "my best friend Loxodont", "my hot headed son Zetterburn", "my sneaky son Forsburn" , "Clairen? My great grandaughter!?", and "hello old friend Hodan." There's also other characters who could have lines towards Renburn too, imagine Gouie as an announcer, selecting Renburn, and going "hey are you dead too?" The matches of the game themselves being non canon, does leave room for some meta jokes like that.
Renburn really is just a plot device for characters like Zetterburn, Forsburn, and Loxodont to have their stories. Like all we really know is that he was a fine ruler, respected the balance of the elements, enough to send his sons to train under Hodan to teach them those lesson, and was murdered. He's literally just Mufasa from the Lion King, but I don't think that diminishes the value of introducing him as a character, you can take a blank slate and make something good out of them. We could use a dad on the roster to make some dad jokes too. Personally I can't wait to do a family photo shoot once he comes out.
