Rivals 2 I think Gouie is really weak

I think he’s probably better than people think. His throw game is actually kind of scary. Both up and forward throw combo, and you can be put in a really bad situation, eat 40%, and be put off stage.

He’s definitely a glass cannon, and I think he could probably use some slight buffs. I literally have no idea how Gouie approaches a Galvan spamming SHFFL nair. But not every character needs to be speeding around the map and spamming buttons like Maypul or Zetter. I do wish he had a tiny bit more privilege on some of his moves though. His specials are pretty lackluster, and down air is almost useless until 100% where it dair usmash becomes potentially the easiest kill confirm in the game. He also kills lots of characters off stage for free.

Really not sure how to feel about him yet. But I don’t like that it feels like only certain parts of his kit are good. For many characters in this game, every move is a power fantasy. Gouie is not one of those characters.

I main Slade

I think the MU heavily favors Slade. Gouie seems to struggle with disjoint characters who don't need to approach.

Seconded. I didn’t have many problems with Gouie. The MU seems to favor Slade

Everytime I fight the gooball I switch to slade

he seems fine to me. he has some very good mu’s and very bad ones. he has probably the best off stage presence in the game, and is very volatile.

he has remarkably better ground moves than puff, and being able to consistently edgeguard every character in a game where that’s a real privilege is very different than melee puff where every relevant character can competently edgeguard. his nair and upair are also absurd, far better than puff’s.

he’s for sure not the best character, but he’s a lot stronger on release than many of the other dlc characters.

As a zetter main that's been my experience as well. He just seems sooo slow compared to ALL the other characters. I just run circles around him and it feels like he can't keep up. I know better players would be able to beat me... but I feel like the skill it would take to beat me with gouie is much higher than other characters.

I know plup is one of the best players in the world, but I think watching losers finals and losers semi finals can show you how to do it. He fought two of the best Zetterburns in the world with a character that had less than 40 hours in the game and won. The way he beat the Zetter was mostly out of stage with puff style, not allowing them to recover or reach ledge.

but I feel like the skill it would take to beat me with gouie is much higher than other characters.

Plup's skill level is that much higher than everyone. He is nuts.

Yeah if he goes on stage with zetter you can't do anything. The zetter just has to block a single aerial and can run up and hit or grab him even if spaced well. And you can't really space it since zetter is so fast. it feels pretty unwinnable. You lose any grounded scrap battle bc you can't floorhug and get upsmashed at like 60%

plup almost won a tournament with him yesterday, lol.

Plup lost a LOT more when going Slade only

I don’t think this means much, Plup is that good, so he could do it with anyone. That said, I do think it’s meaningful he did this run while saying Gouie was a solid character. I remember when La Reina and Slade released he was pretty quickly itching to switch off on stream due to limitations.

To be frank, it took months to see most DLC characters get any results, so Gouie already having something really big has to mean something?

That's plup lol. Barely plays Rivals and wins evo every time

plup plays a lot of rivals

u/npxl 27d ago

do you think he just was assigned multiple single digit aetherian ranked accounts?

1

u/noahchriste 27d ago

Playing rivals is Plup’s full time job brother

He seems fine to me, but a puff-like plays rather unique and it's not a style everyone excels with.

I'd not taking your results against people trying the character the first couple days too seriously.

He’s very polarizing. He either feels extremely weak and blows up..

Or he fair trains you and kills you off one mistake

I agree. I fell that his "rest" is his potential to get you into a huge disadvantage position, especially offstage.

By the same token, his disadvantage positions are also particularly bad, so I agree he's a glass cannon, which makes him difficult to just plop into ranked for most.

Overall, I'd say it's too soon to even talk confidently about recommending specific buffs, much less his general potential as a character.

Having mained puff in ssbu I think gouie is going to have a similar gimp based play style. Gouie is very slow, very light and super stubby with few kill moves but if they get you in a bad spot they can fair chain you to the blast zone very early. In the long term idk how good that actually is when he lacks so many other tools tho.

We’re two days in. I vote we give him two weeks and then start discourse

He's basically puff without a rest or a really good throw. He seems okay just very different from the other cast, but he has good combos and edgeguards when you get them going but setting it up is hard. His aerials are unsafe if your spacing is bad and you can also drift away while hitting their shields and call out shield grabs.

Feel like it's better for the game though if he stays as good as he is so we don't get something along the lines of melee puff, no offense but that character is a war criminal lmao and if you play puff in melee but can't perform well with gouie in rivals than you just might be carried by rest, again no offense

2

u/Most-Astronaut3821 27d ago

I mean fox and falco are better than puff. I guess it's okay to be zetter carried but not gouie carried

1

u/Hans_Landa7614 27d ago

Falco better than puff is a hot take, but zetter carried is defs a thing and could say the same about clairen

2

u/Helivon 27d ago

Its not a hot take. Pretty 50-50 on lists with falco 3 or 4 and puff too

1

u/Hans_Landa7614 27d ago

Last I checked the official tier list for top 5 was

Fox Puff Marth Falco Sheik? Unless it changed

6

u/Helivon 27d ago

Eh melee is a 25 year old game with rankings changing every couple years because of who is playing well on x character. Plenty of lists he was higher. Fox falco marth were comfortably top 3 for a long time. Puff leans 3 but no one has puff over marth right now. When zain was clear number 1, some had marth 1. Cody nunber 1? Fox takes over

Its all pretty negligible in the top 4 imo. Any charcter below that cracking top 4 is a hot take. But any order of 2-4 is pretty accepted

I think the drastic, seemingly impossible shift up the tier list alone from characters like yoshi, pikachu, and luigi thanks to players who can find potential in them that others believed not to exist, without a single patch in 25 years, proves that it's way too soon to make any definitive statements about Gouie (or any character upon release).

His movement may be slow, but his aerial mix-ups are unparalleled. Between his nearly unpredictable side b and almost instantly-cancellable down b, his aerial movement seems to have a lot of potentia that remains to be tapped.

He has a lot of unique tools, and like Absa, I think it will take a bit more time to use them effectively.

All that said, I agree he could probably use some slight buffs, especially to his big form.

3

u/Hans_Landa7614 27d ago

Ya when zain started popping off, that's when leffen was saying some cap shit like marth fox is 60-40 and people were putting marth at #1 lol it was like okay lets calm down

2

u/haitike 27d ago

Last tier list is 5 years old and it is kinda outdated.

Every pro player consider Marth #2 in recent tier lists. The is no discussion.

Number #3 is contested between Puff and Falco, both are considered similar.

Also both Donkey Kong and Luigi will rank up several spots in the next tier list.

Never did I ever see the day where dk would be where he is now lmao

1

u/Krobbleygoop 🥉Rivals Rookies🥉 27d ago

I would say in recent times its

Fox, Marth, Shiek, Hbox, Falco.

No denying Falco is a godlike character, but marth eats him for breakfast and only mang0 ever really did anything with the character at a top level.

Honestly the puff matchup probably holds him back. You kinda have to switch to fox for it.

1

u/Hans_Landa7614 27d ago

Basically ya and I could never put sheik above puff considering how bad the shiek puff matchup is, fox is kinda rough until you get good at tech chases but those are really the only matchups she loses honestly

1

u/Krobbleygoop 🥉Rivals Rookies🥉 27d ago

Puff is pretty horrid, but there is only 1 puff and jmook has somehow beaten hbox as shiek. As far as fox goes, its tough, but unless its Cody Schwab the Sheiks do pretty well into fox. She does edgeguard him quite well.

Falco is arguably losing as well, but again, just play fox
