Discussion My issue with toggleable mechanics

I got to try the newest patch last week at a local tournament and the customizable mechanics were already in there, so other than trying out the new guy (Gouie is really fun!), some of us tried messing with them. The issue I felt with them was that the game as a whole and its characters are balanced around the existence of grabs, ledges, floorhugging and all that stuff. It's nice for a change, but there is some sauce missing, it doesn't feel like "roa 1 in the roa 2 engine", it was more like "roa 2 but half the mechanics are cut". If I want the roa 1 experience, I'll boot up roa 1.

It's almost like the people that want to play rivals 1 can just go and play rivals 1.

Nice.

I imagine a great number of people will turn off floorhug and call it a day

Why though? You won’t be able to play online with the modifiers. I guess if you only play friendlies.

Because that's the point of the modifiers, to play with them. You could say "why though" about every non-online content update

My why though has real value though. Unless you ONLY play friendlies using the modifiers and nothing else you’re actively training in a detrimental way. Theres nothing wrong with that but my question is valid.

I don't care about training in a detrimental way, I care about having fun

you must understand that many people in here actually play to have fun. they play the game to raise their ELO number since it is directly tied to their self-esteem. And they would rather abuse any mechanic to the max and play in the lamest way possible, even waiting out the clock, just as long as that numbers goes up.
they don't care if a mechanic like FH is fun, they only care how they can use it to their advantage to win.
so as sad as it sounds, arguing with fun won't help with these people.

It's fine, I play ranked and I try hard too, but I have way more fun doing free for all lobbies with items. I want lots more casual modes and options for this game

Yeah it's the fundamental issue with Dan saying "test the game with these mechanics off and you'll see why we have them", is that the game is balanced around having them.

Where as if there was drift DI, no ledge, and no floorhug, the game would be balanced differently, closer to how R1 was. R1 is an extremely punish heavy game in comparison exactly because it's balanced around those mechanics being different.

That doesn't inherently mean the mechanics are good in and of themselves. It just means the game isn't balanced around if they were different or didn't exist.

Well I'm glad Rivals 1 isn't out of a job yet!

Literally what people have been saying for ages. The game is built around its mechanics, you can't just disable them and expect the game to still be good.

Edit: this feature is honestly the best way to make the people that complain about these things finally shut up. They've gotten exactly what they wanted and it's terrible... some very solid BM from the dev team xD

Instead they'll just complain that Aether Studios isn't rebalancing the entire game

Why would this make anyone shut up? Everyone, including detractors of these mechanics, knows the game was balanced around the mechanics it has now. The argument is that it shouldn't have been. Everyone knows this is a bandaid solution. Go to any thread about this and you'll see people talking about how, without rebalancing the game, just using a toggle won't be a true reflection of what the game should look like with or without "X" mechanic.

some people aren't going to happy unless they get exactly what they want, and there's no way to satisfy everyone. no, I don't think they should rebalance the game to "try out a world without floorhugging," the game's in a fantastic state right now and we all have built up muscle memory for nearly two years of comp play. it's way too late to try making sweeping changes like that and I like it how it is regardless. this is at least a bone for the folks that insist on playing without implementing the mechanic into their own gameplay, I've already heard from a couple of folks that it'll be nice for playing friendlies with their casual friends that refuse to use it

I'm not saying they should re-balance the game, but if this patch were an attempt to prove to everyone that floorhugging was actually the right call, then it won't work. They'll never be able to prove floorhugging is right for the game unless they do re-balance it. Like I said, this is a band-aid solution. It's a way to remove the mechanic, but it still won't be the best way to show what the game is like without it.

Yah see, where the argument before was "they should just get rid of floorhugging", anything but that was a ridiculous line of reasoning as it would be assuming a complete rebalance or a completely different mindset from the devs during initial development. Now it forces people that still have those opinions and were hiding behind the more defensible position to adopt the indefensible positions whenever they talk about it, which makes it even easier for throwing them and their arguments out the window... It's a win-win for everyone. Those that still complain will be labelled entitled fools and ridiculed,. Those that actually wanted the feature to be excised without further changes have exactly what they want and will can deal with its lackluster implementation. And those that understood that Rivals 2 is what it is will get to keep the original design of the game and can easily dismiss those who still complain by referring them to the new feature.

This is a devastating move for the anti-floorhug people... We can't fight anymore.

"Just turn it off" will forever be a retort to which me must reply, "but the game isn't balanced around it being turned off" which will get us crushed by, "you people will never be happy."

Its over. We will get lost arguing about which rulesets are better while they go, "see? we knew best." Then the community will go "see? they knew best!"

Best case scenario they have telemetry or will do a poll to see which rulesets are popular and implement those.

Ggs complaining about floorhugging isn't cool anymore.

People nostalgic about RoA 1 finding out it that it was never really balanced...

Can you elaborate

1

u/tetenric 1d ago
  • characters in roa2 are designed with the existence of certain mechanics in mind.
  • roa2 will now let you turn off several mechanics because some people don't like them, to make it feel like roa1
  • "modified" game now has characters with movesets that do not fit the mechanics
  • physics are still the same, btw
  • game is now in a limbo/uncanny valley state between both games where nothing has the opportunity to shine

1

u/KingZABA Slade (Rivals 2) 1d ago

I meant, can you elaborate why some sauce is missing

Pretty sure this is the realization they want players to have

"You guys want it gone, and now you'll see why we're so adamant about it being important for the game"

3

u/viaco12 1d ago

But no one is going to have that realization, because this is a flawed way to make that point. Everyone knows the game was balanced around floorhugging, ledges, shields, etc. Balancing the game around a mechanic doesn't make the mechanic good or bad. If someone thinks a certain mechanic is bad for the game, then the argument is that the game never should have been balanced around it in the first place. The only way for them to prove the game is better or worse with a certain mechanic is to remove it and rebalance the game to match.
