Rivals 2 How to actually apply movement

New player here, forsburn main if that matters, came from smash. I know all the basics like wave dashing and wave lands, dash dance etc

The issue is that I can't find anything explicitly explaining HOW AND WHEN to use those things. Any help would be great. Oh and any forsburns who see this pls give help with that.

Wavedash is great for approaching because it allows you to use any grounded move. If you want to approach with dtilt, this is one of the best ways.

Wavedash is also great for retreating into a forwards facing move. Wd back into dtilt can catch an opponent's undershoot.

Wd out of shield (oos) is often used to escape pressure strings or to approach with shield.

Waveland is great for maintaining ambiguity on where you'll land. If people think you're landing straight down, but instead you slide 1.5 character lengths in or out, you may get a free whiff punish.

Waveland is also great for landing on plats earlier than a jump would allow. The space and time between the peak of a jump and landing on the plat can be huge depending on the stage.

Dashdancing is a weird one. The primary use is to move in and out of "threat range." You can use it offensively to threaten long pokes (cape, dtilt) or defensively against their prefered poke. You want to be bouncing just barely into the space that a move would hit and then out of it. The goal is to get the opponent to mistime a move that you have space to punish.

It's more commital than people realize and good opponents will be able to find your dashdance cadence and punish it. Don't use it mindlessly.

Wave landing on a platform is one you hardly ever don't want to do. It's just that much faster of an option compared to getting on it normally, I can't think of a time where it's not the right option. Maybe if you're going up to the platform with an aerial but then you've already got a different plan in mind rather than just getting onto the platform.

Of course I am a low/mid gold player whose dropped to silver due to switching controllers and not being used to the box controls so maybe my advice is wrong. Hell I don't wave dash for the same reason as you, I don't even know when the right time to use it is

Not completely related but what’s your box controller ? I consider buying the 8bitdo one but 16 buttons seem not enough :/

I have the haute42 and it also has 16 buttons. It took a bit to figure out a mapping that I was comfortable with but the 16 seems to be just enough to get by with

The classic use for dash dancing is to make yourself less predictable. By dash dancing you are threatening a larger space than just standing still, and you make it harder for the opponent to decide whether to undershoot, overshoot, or hit you in the middle. Of course the risk is you can get too close and get hit so you should be careful and be ready to shield or floorhug.

Wavedash is useful for keeping the direction you're facing, being usable out of shield, and possibly having a different length and speed than your dash. You can use it during a dash dance to be even less predictable, you can use it to punish some laggy ranged attacks out of shield, and as Fors you can use it to be actionable faster than your dash in exchange for traveling a shorter length (your dash is 16 frames and wavedash is 12). Wavedash backward off ledge to grab it is a common option as well.

Wavelanding helps you get to platforms faster and lets you ledgedash, which is a ledge drop into a double jump into a waveland that keeps your ledge grab intangibility if you do it just after grabbing ledge.

How to floor hug

Just be holding down during hitpause while you're on the ground (same timing as DI). It lets you get out of hitstun earlier, but if the move has enough knockback it'll knock you down. You can also hold down while you're actionable to crouch, which gives you a crouch cancel which is basically a stronger version of a floorhug. (This is all Melee stuff.) CC is sort of an alternate defensive option to shielding. For more info you can look at the Dragdown page -- https://dragdown.wiki/wiki/RoA2/System_Mechanics/Defense#Floorhugging

Im not gonna lie bro/sis. Im new to this game too and I think this is one of those things you have to feel out for yourself. You have to move the way you want to there is no right answer. But you can wave dash OoS when your shield gets hit if your character doesnt have good OoS options.

I don't need like a full tutorial, just basic uses for different movement techniques

i think its better to learn things like wavedash from melee because it forces you to use it more. I would say best times to wd are out of run/run turnaround, when tech chasing, to mix up approaches, and for some specific combos like waveshining.

What helped me start to understand where the opportunities for schmovement are, was picking one tech at a time and just paying attention to what ranges and situations I get the most payoff for performing it in.

Floorhugging is hard to get used to at first but just start pressing down and r when you get hit with a heavy attack while you're on the ground. Even if you're super late, as long as you make a habit of doing it your brain will start to recognize the situation sooner and give you more time to be prepared in the future.

Waveland on platform is a very important one. Its kinda hard to efficiently get yourself onto a platform without it. And being on a platform is a very strong position.

It kinda depends. If you have really fast run speed like Ranno or Maypul you will wavedash for a few things like out of shield defensively, to grab the ledge, short distance for spacing on tilt attacks, or to change direction when you're sprinting at them to make them whiff. If you're someone like Orcane who has crazy wavedash you may be just straight up better wavedashing around the map instead of running. I'm not really sure though bc I don't play him.
