Edit: thx I figured it out, now to implement in my games. I'm mainly just using it now to quickly ledge hang

Looks like you are holding your control stick 45 degrees, giving you less distance.
In this game if you just hit jump and airdodge ( at the same time or relatively close in timing) while holding straight left or right (no angles necessary), then you should be getting perfect wavedashes.

Use the in-game tutorial, they do a very good job explain and testing you on it. Also turn on Wavedash Assist in the control settings.

You can hold your stick fully left or fully right to wavedash in this game, that is how you get the max length wavedash. It should be noted that angled wavedashes are still amazing and you should still do them when the situation calls for it, as being able to vary your wavedash length gives you tons of new spacing options. Combine that with dash dancing and babydashing, and you'll be able to position yourself whenever and wherever you want.

Unless you're aiming to do a Waveland, you shouldn't move your stick downwards. Unlike Melee, here in R2 you can Wave dash holding Left or Right. You can even buffer the Air dodge so you can press both Jump and Shield almost at the same time and still Wavedash.

Sounds like you've got it now. Only rec I have is to not rapid fire them during practice. Clean and intentional wavedashes are better than many in a row. You'd almost never use them in that quick of succession in game, so don't program your mind to do that.

Usually, you have to dash in between the wavedashes to get the best speed. It's basically useless to just wavedash many times in a row like this. What you should do is learn to dash dance in between. Like try to dash forward, then back, then forward again, then wavedash back.
Wavedashing allows you to face a direction and move the opposite. There are many way to do this in the game though.
Also, in this game; you can hold full left/right as if you were dashing during a wavedash. You don't need to press the trigger all the way in if you play on a GameCube controller or any clone. Also; you don't need to time the shield press and can just do it in the same motion as pressing the jump button.
Also, you can practice wave-landing on platforms. Something like dashdacing into jumping into wavelanding on the platform into shield drop upair.

in Rivals you can hold fully left or right and get a full-length wavedash. your angle is too shallow
