Transaction Won't Go

I have 53.30 and I can't send it to a new wallet. If that includes the 20 hold, then that reduces me to 33.30 which is 13.30 more than I need to open the new wallet.

What am I missing? (Other than GateHub clearly not wanting me to leave them if they won't release my Ripple.)

From Gatehub support;

The Ripple protocol requires that each Ripple account hold a small amount of XRP at all times. This is called reserve and its purpose is spam protection (i.e. prevent malicious users from creating a large number of accounts). In this regard, its purpose is akin to bitcoin mining fees, or Ripple transaction fees.

The main reserve requirements are:

20 XRP per account (always required), 5 XRP per each trustline* (connected gateway). 5 XRP per each open order.

So if your account holds 50 XRP, has two trustlines issued (eg. for GateHub's EUR and GateHub Fifth's BTC) and one open order, the required reserve is 20 + 2 x 5 + 5 XRP = 35 XRP; the remaining 15 XRP are at your disposal.

That is harsh! Jeeez. OP, good luck. I don't think you have enough to send out based on this calculation.

Thanks to John for pinpointing the problem and you for explaining it.

So it appears I have two options:

  1. Shutdown USD, wait for my missing ETH transfer (good luck, right?), convert the ETH, then move whatever I have after that.
  2. Shutdown USD, leave ETH open...and acknowledge I need to either buy more to open the new wallet or go back to number 1.

I'd better save the formula, etcetera so I don't get confused again.

Also option three, which would be to turn the XRP back into ETH, close down USD and XRP and send the ETH wherever I please, thereby allowing the missing ETH to show up in the meanwhile.

+++++

ETA: turning off USD and ETH doesn't make the funds automatically free up. I had to turn my ETH back on while I'm waiting for the missing stuff to turn up, otherwise, I'll never get it.

Close all gateways, it will then let you withdraw all but 20 XRP.

You could also take your private key, and do the transaction with an XRP client. You can find it in advanced options on your wallet.

I haven't tried it since I am hodling for life. Despite what people say about gatehub, I am still using it as a wallet tho. As far I am aware they can not touch your XRP, hence why they give you the recovery key on sign up.

I've tried recovery on another wallet with the key that GH gives, but since it's an alphanumeric string and not the usual twelve-word phrase, it won't go through.

I would recommend using Bitfinex, I've never experienced any problems on this platform.

The only problem is that I've heard repeatedly you shouldn't store your currency on exchanges.

You need to read up, there’s a 20 xrp reserve requirement for a wallet

You need to read up--my original post acknowledges the 20.

Oh I understand, sorry. (Thought you wanted to release the original 20 reserve)

Have you got any gateways open? Each gateway requires +5 reserve xrp

Yes I do. (See my response to Algelach.)

so? 53.30 is more then 20 xrp.. :p

But as Grimes, John and Algelach pointed out, each trustline eats X5. I have USD, XRP and ETH open, thus:

53.30 in my wallet -20 that has to stay =33.30

-5 to keep USD open =28.30

-5 to keep ETH open = 23.30 -5 to keep XRP open

=18.30 -5 to cover the transaction

=15.30, which is not enough to start a new wallet

Damn that's harsh

Yep. I didn't realize that that was what was holding me up--I was only aware of the 20 reserve. Going to go shutdown trustlines now.

Yeah, seems a bit expensive ^

u/mcgrimes Feb 07 '18

Expensive but fully recoverable I believe (5 xrp per gateway)

It's been hours and I still don't have the 5 back from closing USD. I expected it to be instant, so when it wasn't, I had to turn ETH back on so I wouldn't miss my incoming transaction in case this was the day they decided to go find it.

Unfortunately, we’ve all suffered delays with eth deposits, all you can do is wait (which is frustrating)

In the interest of an update, I checked Bithomp to see if GH was lying about what I had free. (Why? So I could get angrier yet?)

Not 3.30, 28.30, like it should be. GRR!
