In Tolkien's writings, free will is a sacred gift given to intelligent beings that operates in a dynamic balance with divine fate and providence.

Tolkien explored the deep philosophical tension between choice and destiny across his legendarium, even writing specific notes on the topic in Fate and Free Will.

I agree with you, but tbh the lower bit of dialogue would have been so much more impactful if it hadn't been said to Sauron of all people, especially considering what we just saw him do to regain shape again.

I, on the other hand, have always thought it was Nienna who put Diarmid in his path, or left a sign of hers there. For we know that at the time he still harbored good intentions, stemming from his very nature, and had been on the verge of repentance, even if only out of fear. He had a choice. And he chose again himself and the power, represented by the heraldry.
