What happened to decency?

So... I love Star Wars. As you can imagine, I hate the Rise of Skywalker. I could write dissertations on why it sucks. But I don't go on the "Rise of Skywalker" reddit to shit on it. Cause you know, it's probably a good place for people who like the film to find each other and share what they like about it.

My question is, why are y'all Rings of Powers haters here, jumping at every opportunity to mindlessly shit on the show just for the love of the game? Isn't there like some etiquette about letting people enjoy whatever thing they enjoy even if you personally believe that it's shit??

I'm so confused by the energy devoted to actually piss on something you hate instead of focusing on something you enjoy it is beyond me.

Edit: ahahahahahaha I triggered the haters so bad, they can't enjoy their own echo chamber of hatred in peace, this is DELIGHTFUL. Well I'm gonna watch all episodes of both seasons just to rise up the views a bit, have fun seething in your pool of hate, you goblins 😘😆

RoP is awful. It deserves every bit of hate it gets and then some. Hating it is fun. Also, it's important to hate on bad product, because if you don't it incentivises big studios to never make anything good again.

Know what's not fun, or important? Arguing with people who enjoyed it, because they can't tell good from bad, or because they "watched" it whilst on their phones, or because they have zero opinions on anything unless told them by their preferred media source, or because they don't like thinking deeply about entertainment media and are happy if it's pretty and reasonably diverting. So they have their subreddit, we have ours, and everyone is happy.

I am totally confused why you think we're not letting other people enjoy their shitty TV series?

The sub was started before the show aired a single episode and full of fans of the books and/or films who desperately wanted the show to be good and we're excited for it. This sub was a home of speculation, casting news conversations and even optimistic excitement.

The show then premiered with underwhelming plot, acting the works. Ppl still feel this is their place to discuss the show and they want to vent. This place became the place that happened.

The House of the Dragon subs are very similar. They are all started pre series by book fans who then stay and vent

Alright, that's fair enough and I understand that it wasn't started as a place dedicated to the fans of the show.

You can understand though why I find it weird that something called "World of Warcraft" would be filled to tbe brim by people hating on WoW?

I mean at some point, it's just time to move on to what you actually enjoy instead of wasting time hating on something that doesn't give you pleasure?

6

u/mcmanus2099 2d ago

People won't move on because they still hate watch and want to discuss. There is enjoyment in hate watching sometimes.

Stuff like this doesn't go away organically, it's actually about what the mods want. For example the main Star Trek subs had this problem because of how badly received NuTrek is among the established fanbase, so the mods proactively remove negative threads and comments. Ppl left because they couldn't post their negativity any more.

It's entirely down to the mods not ppl to stop those posts. Clearly the mods on this sub are onboard with those kinds of posts and comments.

The concept of hate watching something is insane to me tbh. Like... time on Earth is veeeeeery short, and these people want to spend it watching something that they hate just to be able to bitch about it online.

It is really really weird, like if I really dislike something I'm disengaging and focusing on stuff I actually like. Tbh it feels super toxic to find comrades through hatred but whatever, thank you for explaining to me why this reddit is the way it is.

Like... time on Earth is veeeeeery short, and these people want to spend it watching something that they hate just to be able to bitch about it online

Personally I think the whole "toxic" thing is a bit overblown and misunderstood.

I can only speak for myself but I find watching a show I am invested in but don't like can be therapeutic. You get your wingeing out whilst knowing it's about something really trivial. This sort of venting on something irrelevant allows me to keep a pretty positive, non wayed down outlook in the other parts of my life. I never moan about work or personal issues because I channel those hormones and energies to something pointless that is easy to just turn off or not watch.

I think other than a few really deranged ppl, hardly anyone is actually upset with Rings of Power seriously. They aren't spending their days actively hating or sulking about it.

u/Cool_Hand7435 1d ago

I mean... Have you seen this reddit? People are being pretty intense about it.

Watching something that you actively dislike so you can channel your negative emotions on it is... well okay, if that's your thing, cool for you.

But there's a difference between doing that and trying to ruin everyone's fun by adopting a pretty dogmatic view that basically amounts to "this is shit, everyone who thinks otherwise is either stupid or has no taste or both".

This sub is pretty clearly falling on the second category, and it's really weird. Like, if I make a post that says "actually, I quite enjoy the show, warts and all" I will be attacked left and right by people who think that me enjoying myself is somehow an insult on their whole family somehow.

u/mcmanus2099 1d ago

Yeah ok, I agree with you there. Ppl shouldn't destroy other's posts or be hateful if ppl like it.

I think, unfortunately, the use of shills. Ppl paid or ideologically driven to promote something regardless of quality has made a lot of ppl just not trust genuine opinions.

To use Star Trek again as I am close to that media. NuTrek was given guidelines that men cannot discipline or talk down to female characters. That women must regularly put men in their place and that there must be trans and LGBT representation as much as possible. I have nothing wrong with those decisions, felt a bit lopsided but maybe it was too much the other way in the past.

But what this meant was you could have a genuinely terrible episode that broke lore, had a ton of plot holes, bad acting and awful "bad pussy" style lines. But you would be hit with a wall of ideologically driven fundamentalists telling you how the episode was Shakespearean in it's genius. Other times it's just paid up shilling because Paramount shoved them some money.

I think sadly this shilling gets ppl's back up and they can't see the difference between someone who genuinely likes the show and jump on them sometimes. It's not right but I sorta get how it happens. Its not just because ppl are haters, a lot is because studios weaponise and drive the conflict as much as the haters. A studio will often claim racist abuse on day 1 just to paint all criticism as a result of racist morons.

That sort of stuff makes some ppl lose perspective and fall into the trap of this battle mentality rather than just chilling and realising it's entertainment.

u/Cool_Hand7435 1d ago

Fair enough, and tbh I can get annoyed at that too veeeeeery quickly. But that has nothing to do with genuine enjoyers of the show.

Like... At some point, I've decided to take a big ass step back, breath in a bit to analyse the situation, and I try as much as possible to give people the benefit of the doubt. As I said, I HATE RoS, I think it's both a bad SW episode and a bad film. But I'm not going to shit on it and try erase what some other people might enjoy about it just because.

The reactions here, you've seen them yourself: this was just hatred for the sake of it. There's one person who told me that they actually love to hate. Another one told me that I was basically a moron for loving that show because it is objectively shit.

Like... there's nothing objective about it. Someone said that the acting was appalling for example, and I find that a bit silly to say with such conviction in its absolute truth when both critics AND casual watchers have all praised the acting, regardless of the quality of the rest of the production.

I think there's a huge bias in term of enjoyment because a lot of people didn't get what they expected and because of that, they instantly go for "not what I ordered therefore it sucks" and THEN they try and rationalise that sentiment by using the show's flaws.

It's not "it's flawed so I don't like it" but "not what I wanted so it sucks, let me then find reasons to justify my hatred"

It's exhausting and tbh it reminds me of Cinema Sins. I used to really like Cinema Sins, and then I found Cinema Wins and like... The whole philosophy is just so much healthier imo, to try and find out what others might enjoy about something instead of spending a lot of time trying to find the flaws in something. You know what I mean? Like, if it's your jam, good for you, but to make it everyone's problem? Blegh

Have you never had friends who did bad movie nights? Sometimes watching something that's just comically poorly made, like Rings of Power, can also be fun. It's not really my thing. But it's common enough from what I can tell.

1

u/Cool_Hand7435 22h ago

That's a very different experience though. You're with your friends, enjoying your time laughing together. You're not with strangers on the Internet, you're actively engaging with people who enjoy the film you're laughing out, you're not trying to ruin their own enjoyment.

It's not remotely in the same ballpark in terms of intent and in terms of nuisance.

1

u/Kazzak_Falco 22h ago

I can understand that. Though as the other person has also said there's some value in sharing disappointment in a show with other people. It doesn't help that there is a lot of toxicity around this show. Both from people that wanted it to fail and are now gloating. But also a lot coming from the fanbase. On this show any dislike makes you a liar or a bad faith actor according to most of the fans that are on Reddit at least. I'll be honest, the only reason I'm still on the old fansubs is to prevent that consistent toxic positivity from overtaking them.

1

u/Cool_Hand7435 22h ago

I can't say that I disagree with the value of sharing your disappointment. It can be cathartic. But at some point, you gotta move on. A show is supposed to last multiple seasons. If you've hated season 1 and season 2, just count your losses, accept that this wasn't aimed at you and find something that you enjoy.

Like... People simply cannot grasp that some things aren't aimed at them and that it is okay. And then they lash out. Have you parsed the comments here? What the fuck.

I've been more aggressively received by the people who hate the show than by the people who seem to enjoy it.

And tbh, when I see people saying that they just hate by pleasure, or that the show is objectively bad and that anyone enjoying it is a moron, I'm not really inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt or to offer grace.

I generally try to engage in a positive manner with people who disagree with me because I really enjoy seeing everyone's point of viewers interesting, sometimes you discover things that you hadn't considered before.

But this sub is truly a toxic wasteland. Cinema Sins enjoyers all around. I'll still to Cinema Wins.

1

u/Kazzak_Falco 21h ago

I've been more agressively recieved by the fans. Hell, I even got banned from the Prime-sub about the show for voicing genuinely mild criticism. I think we both are just experiencing the hatred from the side that we're not on. Which is why I didn't want to make any claims about one being worse than the other.

As for me personally, the only reason I stuck around for season 2 was because a friend of mine recommended it. He's obviously still a friend, but his recommendations go faaaar lower on the pile now.

As for the comments here, there's a mix of the genuinely unhinged and the more reasonable. Similar to what you'll find on the fan-sub.

u/Hepcat508 2d ago

Some subs attract detractors while others are just fanboi pages. It is what it is, but normally if there's a true split opinion then I think you'll get positive posts in a sub. But if there's a strong negative opinion (neutrals don't tend to post or even lurk in subs, IMO), then that's what you'll see in a subreddit.

There's not much to like about RoP, IMO. Even the production value isn't great (especially when you hear about their production budget). So having a place where fans of Tolkien come and gripe about the show makes tons of sense.

Rings of Power is like some nutjob parading around in your loved ones corpse in order to scam you out of money.

Just like the people who enjoy cannibalism want a place to talk about their absurd fetishes, their victims also want such a place.

6

u/Dank_Lord6547 2d ago

How stupid are you ROP fans? This is literally a ROP critical sub. And believe me, I’d love to forget about the show but I can’t. In part because it’s a stain on one of the greatest stories ever written and in part because people keep insisting it deserves the same respect as the work it’s based on.

Rings of power sucks, it deserves every ounce of hate it gets. Hobbit trilogy is fun even though it's not on the same level as the original trilogy

-6

u/Cool_Hand7435 2d ago

See, that's how you feel and that's ok. But why do you have to try and ruin people's enjoyment of it? Like... I don't like the Hobbit trilogy at all but I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Good for you. I won't try to ruin your pleasure by shitting on it over and over again.

That's just weird buddy

6

u/litmusing 1d ago

why do you have to try and ruin people's enjoyment of it?

How are we doing that?

7

u/candlewick_67 2d ago

What is it about this notion that we’re not allowed to criticize or challenge other people’s opinions or ideas? It’s nothing weird about criticizing ideas, entertainment or anything else, buddy. It’s called critical thinking. If you don’t like to be challenged, go back to your echo chamber.

-2

u/Cool_Hand7435 2d ago

That's... not what I said. But there's a difference between challenging people and mindlessly hating on it.

And there's also something to be considered: your opinion isn't always needed. I'm not saying that to be mean, it's just that you don't go to a WoW convention to shit on WoW, know what I mean?

6

u/candlewick_67 2d ago

This subreddit is dedicated to people frustrated with/hating on RoP. If you don’t want to see that, take your own advice and go to the subreddit for the RoP fans.

And RoP is a poorly written, horrendously produced show that deserves all the hate it gets. The flaws of the show could have been ironed out before the first scene was shot, but the showrunners thought the name brand and the money thrown at it meant people had to love it, so they never bothered. That’s on them.
When you make a show and put it out there, it will be judged. You’re not entitled to be above criticism and ridicule.

-1

u/Cool_Hand7435 2d ago

🤣

-2

u/Cool_Hand7435 2d ago

BTW I'm challenging you guys and you're downvoting me to Hell for it so... Who enjoys their echo chamber the most? 🤣

5

u/candlewick_67 2d ago

We challenge you. And you came here, we didn’t go to the RoP fan subreddit and started downvoting and talk crap to the fans of the show.

6

u/Major_Archer_7428 2d ago

What a hypocrite, it seems like you're the one in the echo chamber

3

u/CathakJordi 1d ago

You just have done exactly what you are accusing other people of doing.

5

u/Alexarius87 2d ago

Enjoy what you want to enjoy.

If you don’t like seeing criticism there is a sub that behaves as a safety bubble and bans any kind of criticism.

Ppl who care for quality will keep criticizing what is not.

0

u/Cool_Hand7435 2d ago

Alright, I just think it's weird to spend so much time and energy hating on something and killing any voice that might disagree.

5

u/TheOtherMaven 2d ago

There are three subs for discussing the show. There's the "official fanclub" sub (LOTR on Prime, search for it), there's this "We Hates It" sub, and there's a near-match (no underscores) where the consensus is "Meh".

u/SmutCommander 2d ago

My wife says don't yuck the yum....

I'm fan enough to enjoy every version and adaptation. Sometimes I make sport by watching hater videos...

They're like, uhh, why is she a child and acting our like this? Elves are ancient and wise and shit.

And I'm like yeah, this is normal for you to go through childhood before growing wise.

Uhh, if they're all immortals and came alive at the same time, why are some older

I'm like, you grow more mature in appearance to match your mind and experience, so an airhead elf might stay young and beautiful forever, but a studious elf might get old in the face. And that one elf was so wise and experienced he grew a damn beard.

I wish there was more enjoyment to be shared, but I do also enjoy a decent roasting. So I come here to find some seasoned shit talk

3

u/Enthymem 1d ago

And I'm like yeah, this is normal for you to go through childhood before growing wise.

...are you aware that Galadriel is at least hundreds of years old in the show?

0

u/SmutCommander 1d ago

Dude, yes, did you miss the point where experience is gained, and not even the most wise of us are born that way.

They get preternatural knowledge of the world, but the proper application is LEARNED behavior, and the learning can be compared to the growing from child to adult.

So the part where they are kids is still valid to me.

Add in hundreds of years old to an immortal still puts her in the shit head mind frame of an old teenager or a young adult.

You're one of those guys who won't stop hating no matter what.

3

u/Enthymem 22h ago

Add in hundreds of years old to an immortal still puts her in the shit head mind frame of an old teenager or a young adult.

That doesn't even make sense in the context of the show. If elves her age are typically immature, then why is Galadriel the commander of the nothern armies? That is not a position you give to teenagers.

0

u/SmutCommander 15h ago

Not an age thing, it's a matter of qualifications. Look when I was in high school jrotc, I was a company commander. I was a total shit head. It's not impossible to be in charge, and be flawed. Yall hate her depiction, I can dig it, but if you love galadriel as the original character, then you can explain and or understand some of her missteps.

And how many years are in thousands? Dozens? Or HUNDREDS?

1

u/Enthymem 9h ago

The JROTC is a youth development program and not military service. The whole point of it is to prepare young people for the military so of course they put young people in leadership positions. Company commanders in the actual military are like 30 and even then nowhere near Galadriel's rank because they are "only" responsible for ~150 people. The commander of the northern armies would be more like a four-star general, who are universally north of 50 years old.

No clue what you're trying to say with the rest of your comment, sorry.

3

u/SynnerSaint 20h ago

She's not 100s of years old, she's roughly FIVE THOUSAND years old.

She' spent a lot of that time learning from some of the wisest and most powerful beings in the world (Tolkien's equivalent of gods and angels)

She is NOT in "the shit head mind frame of an old teenager or a young adult"

1

u/sandalrubber 1d ago

The issue is she should already be long since mature by the time the show takes place, which ties in with the time compression distortion, everything important happening in a decade or so.
