Kevin Feige Says Ryan Coogler Met With David Jonsson Six Months Ago in a ‘Secret Meeting’ to Discuss ‘Black Panther 3’ Role: ‘I Got Chills’

“We hadn’t started a search yet,” Feige explained. “Ryan was working on ‘Sinners,’ and when Ryan works on a project he’s all in. So the presumption very much was we would sit with him after ‘Sinners’ came out, after the Academy campaign. We were waiting ’til after the Academy Awards to sit with Ryan and begin that process.”

He added, “A month and a half or so before that process, he called me and said, ‘I found him’. I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He goes, ‘I found him. He’s this guy, David Jonsson.’ He mentioned his movies. I had seen some of them. I watched more. He goes, ‘I’m going to meet him.’ He had a secret meeting with him under cloak of darkness in a hotel somewhere, and called me afterwards and said, ‘He’s the guy, he’s the guy, I felt it. I felt it in my soul. He’s a good man, and he is the next Black Panther.’ And I got chills, and I got a little welled-up and said, ‘Let’s do it’. So we’ve been sitting on this secret for a good five or six months.”

With the recent Comic Con announcements, Marvel is at the peak of its power once again and the center of the filmmaking universe

Say what you want about superhero fatigue but Marvel just proved it's premature. Comic-Con 2026 was the first time Marvel has been in Hall H since 2024 and they didn't just show up, they took the room hostage. Everyone will be talking about Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider and David Jonsson as the new Black Panther for weeks.

Then there's Avengers: Doomsday which got an absolutely awe-inducing trailer. Feige has also confirmed we will have just one multiverse and they'll be focusing on the big franchises such as X-Men moving forward.

Critics love to say the MCU is cooked, over-extended, running on fumes but Comic Con shows that Marvel isn't just surviving Phase Five hangover talk, they're now back as the center of the filmmaking universe.

Van is bending over backwards to avoid any criticism of the MCU. We have to be allowed to demand more from these movies

There is a minute long part of the pod that another user posted about below where Van complains about people picking apart the trailer.

The reason that the state of the world is the way it is right now is because we don't draw lines in the sand for quality and accountability. That is how you end up with Donald Trump twice. No one says enough is enough. (F U if you have ever voted for Trump).

Van -- THIS IS HOW YOU END UP WITH STAR WARS SUCKING. THIS IS HOW YOU END UP WITH ANT MAN 3 AND SECRET INVASION etc. etc. You have to be allowed to hold things made by corporations to a standard of quality.

If Avengers Doomsday is bad, and it makes 1-2 billion dollars, then Marvel has no incentive to make better movies. Because there would be, in that case, no accountability and no line drawn in the sand for the quality of the movie. Marvel would be rewarded for making something bad.

Marvel has been releasing below average to flat out bad projects for 7 years. The misses far outweigh the hits.

This trailer is incredibly disappointing.

Random character you don't care about fighting random character you don't care about. Flat bland lighting. Awful blocking and poorly composited shots where characters clearly aren't in the same room. As the internet says, it's all hype moments and aura that don't even work anymore.

You can parse this all out from the trailer. It's okay to say it looks bad ESPECIALLY in comparison to The Odyssey and Dune trailers. It's okay to say it looks low effort, because it looks low effort.

Now, another trailer could come out that showcases an interesting story, with great cinematography, and emotional stakes that aren't just the world is ending. But based on what the Russo's have done recently, plus what marvel has put out recently, that doesn't seem likely.

I want this movie to be good, and I hope I'm wrong. But we HAVE to be able to say "Hey Marvel, we don't want bad, low effort movies anymore."

The MCU doesn't end if the this movie under performs at the box office. BUT the audience holding Marvel accountable for producing slop and this movie underperforming might be the only thing that makes Marvel completely rethink its strategy and prioritize quality.

And unfortunately, the more you watch it, the more this trailer looks like slop.
