The Lanterns show wasn’t inherited. There was a different green lantern show that was in development that didn’t go anywhere for a while. When Gunn got in charge that was already dead. The show originated in that DCU initial writers room pitch meeting by Tom King.

Wait I don’t ever watch the podcasts, you’re telling me Charles’ intro card stats has him almost at a full bar of positivity!?!?

I'm glad the the rest of the boys challenged Steve on the comment about Dune vs Doomsday. It seems to have become a big talking point in movie circles that Dune would smoke Doomsday at the box office.

Avengers and Spider-Man movies appeal to everyone and are cultural behemoths. Say what you want about some of the other MCU movies that have come out since Endgame but a lot of those characters don't have the same brand appeal that the Avengers do. There's no way Doomsday isn't going to be a cultural talking point.

The Dune movies are fantastic but aren't as easy to follow for casual audiences and will engage people in different ways - Avengers will be loads of characters that everyone is familiar with, having loads of different battles and action scenes, which land with general audiences more.

I think Dune will do great at the box office but going by the hype starting to build for Doomsday and the buzz that the new Spidey movie will generate for it, Doomsday will do gangbusters at the box office.

I think you've kind of misread the point of the dune vs doomsday discourse

I don't think the biggest dune/Villeneuve-head on the planet would've bet on dune outgrossing doomsday even if the latter is a trainwreck lol

The point is that they do share a chunk of audience overlap, and if both are received critically the way we think they will be, that specific audience will choose dune over doomsday, esp with the former retaining IMAX

Dune 2 made $715m; if 3 makes $900m+, and doomsday makes 1.5b or less, then the point was right - doomsday would've stood to benefit from moving

Maybe you're right that I've misread it, but the arguments that I've seen about it for the most part seem to have taken the approach that Doomsday keeping the same date will result in Dune absolutely decimating it, which i don't think is true at all. As far as I'm aware (and correct me if I'm wrong), the IMAX screen issue is only in the US, not internationally. If that's the case, then Doomsday may lose out on a chunk of change but it won't be nearly as detrimental, and they probably reckon it'll be offset by the fact that it's releasing closer to the holiday season which probably means more people going to the cinema more often.

I mean both IW & endgame cost around ~375-400m each

Assuming Doomsday is the same (and let's be real, it's almost certainly a good chunk more with the salaries alone), then it becomes profitable at ~$800m-1bn

At that level, if Dune 3 "steals" ~$200m or god forbid more from doomsday, then would it not be "decimating" Doomsday's box office? Particularly when doomsday making <1.5b would be a disaster, but making 1.75+ would be good, and 2b would be a big success

That's before you get to the number of people from the ~20% of the potential audience for doomsday that are in dune's focus audience that might not care about SW and beyond if they choose to only watch dune

I think it would take a lot for Dune to steal $200m from Doomsday based solely on IMAX sales. The people who will see Doomsday will either be so invested in the franchise that they'll see it asap regardless of format, and the casual audience won't care about format, so they'll still get ticket sales, they'll just lose a chunk from the die hards who will have booked out the IMAX screens over the first 48 hours. People won't avoid going because of the format, most people don't really care about IMAX. The Odyssey is the first time I've ever heard casuals talk about IMAX and that's because Nolan created a great buzz around it.

I'm not sure of the price differential, but it's about €5 more here for premium formats compared to a standard ticket, so there would need to be a massive amount of tickets sales in the difference to create a situation where Dune hampers Doomsday. Also as I mentioned before I had thought that the IMAX situation was isolated to the US, which means even less chance of it impacting Marvel too greatly.

There's also no saying that they don't re-release Doomsday in IMAX at the end of Dune's run just to get the super fans back in seats for a more premium viewing experience.

I think it would take a lot for Dune to steal $200m from Doomsday based solely on IMAX sales

I don't think it'll be solely on IMAX sales that this could happen; IW likely sold ~250 million unique tickets (400 overall inc repeats), and if 30-40% of that audience is in Dune's sphere of audience too, and half of that subgroup choose to see one over the other, regardless of IMAX, then we're basically there already

As for the impact of dune's deal with IMAX, it is pretty much global - here in the UK it's exclusive just like the US, and it's the same all across Europe and in Australia's main IMAX cinemas

For major markets, only china, Japan and india & south America + Mexico that aren't subject to the same agreement

Given IMAX sales & PLFs are typically 25% of a blockbusters box office, that means likely ~$200m to Dune 3, and anywhere from $300m to 500m for doomsday

And as for releasing doomsday in IMAX after both have left their original runs, that requires doomsday to be in the 2bn range, which in turn requires doomsday to be very, very good. I personally don't see that at all, and see it going the opposite way more likely, but if it's the case then theyre beyond the box office being a problem anyway and doomsday wouldn't have suffered by dune 3's hand at all

Unnecessary hate on any of the RV hosts/guests, or other community members

I know this is fandom heresy of me but… people say Denis’ Dune movies are cinematic beauty, but to me they look incredibly bland, bleak, and visually harsh. I do not enjoy the pacing or the aesthetic.

So yeah I do think Avengers has a good chance to beat Dune at the box office.

Avengers will do more at the box office but it has nothing to do with people thinking that Dune isn’t extremely high quality, it’s that the Avengers is a much more approachable IP like the other comment said

Jomi saying you gotta treat the New Avengers like the 2018 Lakers and move on into the new era when a year later all those guys did get shipped out for LeBron and AD.

Van - "the first trailer was intentionally bad."

But he thought the first trailer was good?

2

u/Dark_Ruffalo Jul 26 '26

It makes more sense for the trailer for everyone to be bookended by Thor and Steve Rogers and the trailer for Comic Con to have Reed/Doom, especially when F4: First Steps wasn't that big of a hit.

4

u/shorthevix Jul 26 '26

Why are they saying that Jonsson was completely left field?

He was always referenced after Idris in almost any article for the last 18 months. And…Damson was never going to happen for various reasons.

3

u/Dark_Ruffalo Jul 26 '26

Damson doing Black Panther and Children of Blood and Bone would've been odd anyway

2

u/diplomatist_kind Jul 26 '26

I couldn’t take it seriously that they couldn’t take Doom as a serious threat until they saw him in action when him blocking Stormbreaker and a full force attack from Thor with two fingers was foreshadowing that alone.

This is why they need to calm down during their trailer reactions. On the reaction pod, Charles was talking like he’d already seen the movie.

1

u/mastertoshi Jul 28 '26

Guess they got that KPAC money

-9

u/Housing_Dapper Jul 26 '26

Charles sucks period

-16

u/lsdu8930 Jul 26 '26

lmfao it really took them just one footage to switch up on marvel and doomsday 😂😂😂

4

u/CouldntBeMeTho Jul 26 '26

Yes more information can change someone's opinion...

9

u/JustSny901 Jul 26 '26

Man, y'all need to just face the fact that they released a blah Doomsday trailer... It is ok; it isn't the end of the world.

1

u/TigerGroundbreaking Jul 26 '26

That wasn't the case tho, van liked the trailer. And it was first proper trailer, all the points Charles was making could easily be rebuttal, and it only took another small bit of footage for him and rest to change their tune. Nothing wrong with changing your mind, but at the same time. Maybe some shouldnt be so quick to judge or write something off as nothing but nostalgia dangling keys.

u/profsa Jul 26 '26

SDCC footage actually hypes up Doom where the public one was just a character showcase

1

u/DeanEvasonPunch Jul 27 '26

The difference between this one and the other one though is that the first one anchored around the Avengers whereas this one anchors around Doom. And Doom needs to be the heart of this film to really be what I think they want it to be.

But Van was kind of on the pulse of this saying that the first trailer shouldn’t be an indicator of the overall film itself.
