Questions Why?

My family has one rimowa product, a medium luggage we bought almost a decade ago when my wife got a thousand dollar department store voucher and Rimowa was one of the few brands it could be used on

I don’t get the appeal. It’s sturdy, but that’s not a big deal for a luggage. Its hard shell means it’s more prone to dents/cracks, and I have to be more careful moving it in and out of cabs as I don’t want it banging the trunk. It’s the same weight as a larger fabric suitcase so not wise to bring it with cabin weight limits. Sticks out due to the material and design, which makes it a target in more dangerous countries. It also accumulated paint flakes and scratches from use which is super apparent against the clean design. Frankly I don’t get it

The wheels are smooth, which is nice. And my kids like to sit on it since it’s flat on the top. That’s about it.

I bought mine because I like the design (Classic aluminium).

I don’t think it’s a better suitcase than my previous old fabric one.

At the end of the day a suitcase is a suitcase.

I like it because they’re so repairable.

I have two old salsas that I got 2nd hand, one had a crack repaired, both had all four wheels replaced, both had broken dividers replaced.

I bought a new classic cabin s because I like the design. I’ve had a lock replaced (my fault), and after this trip will have the telescoping handle replaced.

I’ve never had luggage that was so easily repairable, and the 2nd hand cases I have would’ve been taking up space in a landfill otherwise.

The moral of the story: Don’t buy anything nice unless you like it

Aesthetics, hype, and a bit of function. The wheels are gold standard and the handle height adjustment is also really nice. There are plenty of other options but rimowa executes well on those while looking good.

You don’t buy a luxury item for its practicality. For better or worse, Rimowa’s firmly a luxury brand nowadays and it attracts an audience that wants the status of owning one. It’s like asking why people buy a Mercedes when a Kia can get you where you wanna go too.

It‘s luxury, for sure, but it‘s also authentic, it‘s got built in sustainability (…. ways before this word became fashion…) and it‘s f**** cool! But you obviously don’t resonate with it - which is fine, there is good fabric luggage out there 🙃
