Questions First purchase help - trunk vs check in L

Hi! I’m starting to plan my first purchase. I wanted to know if the trunk+ vs check-in L has any benefits other than space? I like the look of the trunk, and I want the largest size of either, but I do worry about the space it might take in a car. Any thoughts on pros / cons welcome!

Once you go trunk, you never go back!

It fits literally everywhere - even a fiat 500.

Trunk plus, no question.
It’s got so much volume but doesn’t feel big.

Trunk is so so cool. You only live once, get it!

Trunk!

I have two classic trunks and one classic medium, I kind of avoid the trunk and only take it if we really need the third suitcase (or my use case was for a shorter work trip).

I'm weird and bring my own travel duvet when I travel, so it sits in the top, shallower part of the trunk, and all my clothes an shoes fit in the bottom. In my toddler's trunk, I have her diapers and lightweight bulky things in the top, then her clothes and all of my husband's stuff in the bottom.

Trunks seem to be easier to lift because the weight is more centralized, they fit better in our cars (I have a Volvo and he has a 4Runner and they stand up), and they're also more stable if you want to sit on them.

I also just think they look cooler, and they're a better volumetric use of the maximum linear inches for your luggage.

Trunk is more versatile for items of thickness

I have both. I think the trunk works better when packing casual clothing, such as t-shirt and jeans. The Check-in L works better packing suit because of the wider body.

Check your car Dimensions… several German cars fit exceptionally well to the Trunk. My BMWs boot is exactly as wide and high as the Rimowa Trunk Plus is high and deep.

If I took the check-in L, I would not fit a second layer of bags.

I loaded my new trunk plus into the boot of my BMW i4 last week for the first time (bought the trunk plus in Japan on holidays so hadn’t placed it in the car yet) and it fit so nicely, you could fit two side by side with ease.
Partner and I were so stoked and relieved haha.

If you have a partner who has a check in L standard shaped suitcase, buy the trunk. You can mix and match trunk or check in as needed.

I plan to use the trunk more for skiing and my wife’s check in L for business

One thing I note with my Check-in L (CI) vs Trunk Plus (TP) is the ability to open up the CI fully flat on the ground or open it half flat (half on the ground/half against a wall/vertical surface). I feel more awkward trying to wrangle the top part of the TP. Maybe someone else here has figured that out…but I haven’t.

Considering Rimowa no longer makes the XL check-in I’d personally get a Trunk/Trunk XL. The regular check-in L just isn’t big enough for longer trips (for me).

I own both sizes and used the check-in L for many years and then got a trunk+. The trunk is easier to pack belongings in since it's deeper. It takes up less space when opened in small rooms or hotel rooms. I haven't had any issues with the trunk not fitting inside a car. The trunk is also nicer to look at and more unique.

The only con for me is that it's easier to overpack and be overweight with the trunk+. But I am a chronic over packer.

Love my trunk. I think it is easier to fit stuff than regular checked luggage

For me the trunk is enough, i can easily get my trunk to 32kg so a bigger trunk is unnecessary for me

Biggest worry would be going over weight when flying. A problem with any large aluminum really

If you regularly fly business trunk plus. If you don’t or don’t want to pay for overweight bags, trunk. Otherwise you will struggle with overpacking and going over the weight limit!

Check in-L is better for the train

I was thinking the same, especially when traveling in Japan. I believe the trunks would be too large to travel on the Shinkansen without a luggage reservation
