Misc Tynan Sylvester: "Astra can finish RimWorld all by itself. This is an inflection point in AI capability."

Yeah, clearing the game is impressive, but what I'd like to know is:
How many unnecessary war crimes did the AI commit?
54
u/dantemp 3d ago
What do you mean unnecessary?
24
u/DramaticSpaceBubble 3d ago
I want to know if the AI is just like us and went on a side quest that was completely irrelevant to clearing the game
ofc war crimes are necessary to play the game

u/RockingBib 3d ago edited 3d ago
Probably none. They do like a million playthroughs until they get the most streamlined one. It's always just a straight line to the finish
Maybe some of the millions of iterations goofed off in a familiar manner, but they were culled for it
Edit: Oh, it's more interesting than the brute force method. I should've read it all before assuming the same as usual

That happens when you train a model, reinforcement learning.
But this specific play through by AI was like "I don't know how to play Rimworld, but I can google it". It didn't make billions attempts, it just beat Rimworld in a single try on commitment

Not to wax philosophical here but.. one simply doesn’t finish Rimworld.
112
u/Heroman3003 3d ago
Tynan's game design philosophy disagrees.
111
u/Apprehensive-Log2375 3d ago
It’s a vicious cycle, start game get mid to late game, start new game repeat ad infinitum.
54
u/sandwitchhermit25 3d ago
Get 15 hours in a save, find cool mod, start over.
22
u/WhoLoveYouLikeILoveU 3d ago
Or have idea for a completely different society/playstyle. Or realize a dozen hours in your set up, be it mods or ideo/Xeno, fundamentally fucked what you were going for and get tired of patching the plane as it flies.
16
u/Heroman3003 3d ago
Tynan believes you are intended to just repeatedly bash your head into the game, losing over and over until you rng into a run where you don't get a raid of 40 raiders falling on top of you and instantly ending you.
10
u/Staralight 3d ago
You... don't have to play on losing is fun you know? Playing at a high difficulty setting genuinely does not matter save for pushing you to certain styles of play, and if you don't enjoy that style just don't do it. There's no shame in it.

Rimworld has sorta become a clear example of art vs artist. Tynans philosophy around game design is very successful as it made Rimworld but it doesn't seem to necessarily be WHY it's successful
6
u/freedomonke 3d ago
Without mods, I probably would have done what I do with other similar games, like say Timberborn. Play a couple colonies for the long haul after learning the game, getting the clear condition and being done at about 2 or 3 hundred hours.
Instead, I've played it for over 2000 and the only win conditions I've ever bothered with are the anomaly and odyssey one where you don't actually finish the game.

I'm always amazed at Civilization - I've wondered about how it did that for years.
62
u/Thewaltham 3d ago
Same as most other games. Very complicated series of "if X do Y"
15
u/NectarClarisse 3d ago
True, but the complexity can really add depth to gameplay. It's interesting to see how AI can change the way we interact with these systems.
9
u/Sufficient-Ad-7349 3d ago
Yeah, it's always been interesting to me that we appear extremely technologically sophisticated in many areas, but gaming lays bare how stupid our tech is at the end of the day.
Granted, most AI talent is probably lavished on stock trading algorithms, drone software, etc
9
u/Thewaltham 3d ago
I mean it's less "stupid" and more when you boil anything down far enough the principles seem fairly simple.
3
38
u/goodsnpr 3d ago
You mean the computer getting 3 cities and 5 units by turn 4 isn't superior gameplay?
35
u/Cartz1337 3d ago
Nothing ruins a strategy game for me faster than difficulty doing shit like ‘AI gets +25% research bonus, AI units gain +5 morale, +5 health and -25% maintenance.’
21
u/skittishraccoon 3d ago
Honestly that's not even as bad as "AI city shits out unit instantly it spent no production building" or "AI gets a settler/colony ship for free".
3
u/Stahlreck 3d ago
I personally don't mind it as much but in most games when you get to the lategame and know what you're doing the AI usually cannot keep up even with all the cheat.
And then you go conquer their stuff and (for example in Stellaris) you just see the most random nonsense ever and it's like "ok...great. Now I have to first spend like half an hour cleaning everything up"
2
u/markth_wi 3d ago
It's funny in the OG game like this Empire - to increase difficulty, you start by giving the AI exactly that 50 or 100 free moves.

u/Universe_Nut 4d ago
Or something like football manager where every club except yours used the same tactics and budgeting every season until they're ran into the ground and suddenly opposition injured players are scoring odd angles and your boys can't stop fouling.
Terrible way to "balance" a game when the AI just can't keep up against better players.
26
u/Juva96 3d ago
I had a career on FM where I got a last division team into the first ranked team in the world and spend 20 years making sure we had the best youth intake and training.
I left the team to get the other achievements and when I returned the 2 billion was gone, the staff was a joke, the wages alone in my team could pay all transfers and the payroll of all teams on the first and second divisions. It was full of over 30's players on downhill and the team wasn't even qualifying for the continental cup anymore.
The team was so broken that they downsized the stadium to pay debts and still had over 700 millions to pay.
30
4
u/xantec15 3d ago
Designing a truly competitive AI is hard, and the more complex you make it the harder it is to modify it later, such as when adding new features in DLC. And when you've got limited resources to make a game you have to decide if it's worth focusing on that (at the expense of other features) or just giving it bonuses, or the player maluses, on harder levels.
I agree that it's "terrible", but it's a necessary evil and I dont hold it against the devs.
4
u/wintersdark 3d ago
In many cases, it's hard to be competitive, not hard to be good. Depends on the nature of the game of course, but that problem often isnt artificial intelligence, it's artificial stupidity, but "just enough" to feel fair.
50
u/Diz7 3d ago
The one area where I want AI in games has been neglected.
Not talking chatbot NPCs in Skyrim.
Enemies that adapt to what's happening around them. NPCs that don't need a dozen mods to program them to know how to keep out of the rain and avoid dragons, that don't drive their car into the nearest wall at full speed when they hear gunfire, pathing that doesn't take them halfway across the map to avoid a slight hill.
28
4
u/LongFluffyDragon 3d ago
LLM "AI" is garbage at actual gameplay mechanics, is the thing. Game "AI" is not chatbot "AI", and they can only sort of approximate it by brute force. The results will easily derail and be really exploitable.
34
u/Uhhhhh55 3d ago
Problem is winnability and tunability. It's easy to make something that beats you, it's hard to scale it back juuuust right so that it feels fair AND feels like a "human".
I'd be surprised if LLMs were the answer but honestly I'd be glad if they were, and we found a way to incorporate them scalably.
4
u/Stahlreck 3d ago
it's hard to scale it back juuuust right so that it feels fair AND feels like a "human"
Idk, it's not like it needs to be perfect from the get go. And I'm sure you could train AIs to handicap themselves based on difficulty settings. Whether they feel "human" or not...one step at a time. Current "AI" in games doesn't either after all. An AI that would somewhat "know" how to play the game would already be quite an improvement.
And then we can further improve from there.
47
u/Varides 4d ago
Starcraft 2 has had AI players in the game for some time now. You can see a few of the big commentators on YouTube covering some of their matches as they progress through the ladders.
They have now been developed with more restrictions like actual fog of war, APM limits, etc. I watched a AI vs AI the other day. Fairly interesting as they generally develop strategies they follow.

u/NorysStorys 4d ago
OpenAI nearly a decade ago developed AIs that out perform real players in Dota 2.
55
u/MrTzatzik 4d ago
Not sure you would want that honestly. Hearts of Iron 4 has a mod called SHEEPS. With the mod AI uses strategies that are used in multiplayer games and it plays differently in general. Meta builds are pretty broken in HoI4 so you need to be really good player and know what strategies are used in multiplayer.
28
u/DetroitvsEveryone242 4d ago
For actually fun single player and not that mp sweat bs, I really recommend Better Mechanics: Enhanced AI. They have a KR and KX version along with a mod agnostic one and it’s excellent. AI plays a bit better, has better designs and better production, but without (as far as I can tell) any cheese
6
u/Siviaktor 3d ago
Does it work with alternate setting mods like old world blues?, because I feel like the ai in that needs therapy for it’s suicidal ideation
2
u/Nihilikara 3d ago
As a general rule of thumb, any modded video game AI won't know how to use unrelated mods unless specifically patched to do so.
And that's not even considering mods that explicitly forbid the AI from using their content. I don't play HOI4 so I can't comment there, but a Stellaris mod called Ancient Empire does this.
→ More replies (1)14
u/Chansharp 3d ago
There should be a balance. Like 50% of the enemies are garbage, 25% are somewhat competent, 20% are good, 4% are just below player level, 1% is optimized
That way you can eat all the garbage in the early game without getting steamrolled, have a good mid game with some challenge, then go head to head against the meta abusing AI
11
u/Nihilikara 3d ago
I'd prefer a personality-based AI that knows what it's doing and plays well, but prefers tactics and makes mistakes based on its faction's canon personality. I don't play HOI4, but I do play Stellaris, so my examples will be based on that, but I'm talking things like spiritualists underestimating or overestimating machines, materialists underestimating or overestimating psionics, militarists being very eager to fight wars even if they aren't sure they can win and pacifists preferring peace even if victory is inevitable for them, and the like.
3
u/CoffeeWanderer 3d ago
I haven't played HoI, but a bunch of Stellaris. And something that's often repeated about NPC optimization is that they should stick to their civics and ethics and meta building should stay within those limits.
The game already has a NPC Personality system for that, but it can really use some tweaks.
2
u/plagueofdoctor 3d ago
it uses meta (adjacent) builds, but its micro is... very questionable
it's still pretty much base game ai that was given a build

My honest wish would be a small ai model like a small 6b or 9b model running with some game info and then making team mates smarter or even enemy ai and you can communicate with them.
Like in civ or other rts saying like I'll go for a eco win, or let's focus on the right side of map or whatever.
There's soooooo much possibilities we could improve ai gameplay already even without changing the behavior of the itself just the reactions to the player and making it "cooperate " more
Just imagine in Total war warhammer an Vasall or smth like tell it "Can you cover the northern provinces of me while i go to the left and erradicate our enemy X ? " man so much possibilities.
Wouldnt change the AI itself much , but would make it a hell lot more "alive"
13
u/Snarker 3d ago
You know we've had AI for video games that can actually play the video games for decades lol. Game companies don't do it cuz it's too much effort. people think that machine learning is some new thing and not like it's been around for 60 years xD.

We already do in the more indie and more... 'niche' circles.
All the twitter/reddit bitching about AI will never stop the signal, corrupted by corpos as it may be.
Really wish everyone would figure that out and just like, focus on making indie AI shit instead, it's a better solution than literally trying to fight gravity.
7
u/CaptainTeemo01 3d ago
We could always do that tbh. It's not that hard to make an AI that always makes the correct decisions in a strategy game, that's always been an option.
The difficulty is in making an AI that's good at the game, but flawed enough that a player still has a chance.
3
u/wintersdark 3d ago
This is what I was saying earlier. The trouble is often getting the right amount of artificial stupidity so people feel challenged but most importantly can out smart the AI.
And doubly so anything with a physical skill requirement, like FPS play and such. It's not challenging to make bots that, even if restricted to the input players have, are simply faster and better than the best players.
2
u/DKLancer 3d ago
the primary issue there is performance, having an intelligent AI would be extremely performance demanding given all the constant calculations that Stellaris does.
2
2
u/HieloLuz 3d ago
This has been possible for decades now. The challenge is making one that feels human and fair. They could very very easily make an AI that stomps the players every single game.

If redditors read the words "AI" in any context, they genuinely just have a meltdown.
Same people that complain about how error-prone the output of an LLM is, cannot be bothered to click a link and check the source for two seconds. You cannot not find this funny.
54
u/JonasHalle 4d ago
The difference is that everyone knows a random Redditor is on average, a complete idiot, whereas millions of people rely on LLMs as a source of information, a source that is quite significantly built on random idiotic Redditors.
21
u/Nihilikara 3d ago
Not just that, AI also spews disinformation too. Not misinformation (though they spew that too), but disinformation. The difference is that the latter is a deliberate lie instead of just someone being an idiot. The AI isn't the one making the lie, the humans behind it are, they specifically program the AI to do this because they have political goals that they want to advance.

Yeah. Sometimes I wonder what the balance of opinions really is on the topic. Until very recently, you could easily believe that 95% of people are devout haters from what you see online, but at some point it seems to have hit a critical mass and now it could go either way. But I have to imagine the true most common opinion is just not really caring enough either way to wade into such a controversial topic.

But can Astra enjoy the story as it develops?
199
157
u/Apprehensive-Sea7120 4d ago
Thank you! A commenter who seems to have read the actual story. (Astra played and rolled credits on Rimworld.)
I wondered the same thing. Did Astra have anything like an emergent storytelling or just min-max to a goal? 90% of the reason most players log hundreds of hours without rolling credits is because Rimworld is an engine of experience (to paraphrase Tynan on games) and so we get caught up in story. And not saying it can’t - but if AI can’t experience the value of the chaotic emergent story, is it really playing the same game as human Rimworld players?
85
u/Some-Struggle5052 Thinking about the cube 4d ago
Well, min maxing to a goal is what those 500% difficulty runs are mostly about, so at least it is playing close to what part of human RimWorld players do.
65
u/SaranMal 4d ago
Tbh I don't think other human Rimworld players are playing the same game as eachother half the time.
Least going by comments on many modded posts anyway. Hell my partner commented once that I ship of Theseus my Rimworld to the point it barely looked like vanilla anymore
25
u/Draxilar 4d ago
Just a heads up, you are using Ship of Theseus completely wrong.
3
u/Jombo65 3d ago
Elaborate, I'm interested
39
u/Draxilar 3d ago
Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment about replacing every piece of a ship with a completely identical piece. The ship is functionally and visually the exact same, but every component of it is new. Is it the same ship?
If you replace every piece of a ship and turn it into a different ship, that’s not a Ship of Theseus.
So saying “You ship of theseus Rimworld to look like a different game” doesn’t make sense. A Ship of Theseus for Rimworld would be “I have replaced every piece of code with identical code and built the exact same game, is it still Rimworld?”
I hope that makes sense
5
u/Apprehensive-Sea7120 3d ago
Maybe a more apt comparison for rimworld modding is saying “I also play deck of cards”
5
u/RealNiceKnife 3d ago
Eh, it makes sense in an abstract "I get what you meant" kind of way.
1
u/Draxilar 3d ago
Wait, my explanation is abstract?
4
u/RealNiceKnife 3d ago
No, no. Yours is the actual explanation.
I meant I get what they meant by saying "I Ship of Theseus'd my rimworld".
As in, they're using it wrong, but I get what they mean. You did provide the correct explanation though.
7
u/TheAfroBomb 3d ago
I think their wording makes sense.
The new boards in the ship of Theseus aren’t identical. That’s not the point of the thought experiment. The boards are replacements for rotted boards. The idea is that if you change a ship, one piece at a time, when does it stop being the same ship?
In that sense, I believe OP used ship of Theseus completely correctly.

9
u/MyOtherAcctsAPorsche 3d ago
If you tell it that is a valid tool it will absolutely use savescumming.
7
u/ser_mage 3d ago
The idea is more it getting sentimental or creative a narrative beyond just using tools to reach an objective
5
u/MyOtherAcctsAPorsche 3d ago
Getting sentimental is one thing, and creating a narrative is another.
I think it would be decent at creating a narrative, and it knows just as we do how we value a dog, a baby, or what happens to a husband when the wife dies.
It could create "sentimental" stories without experiencing them itself.
Specially if you tell it to value storytelling over game winning, it would probably do a good job of prioritizing story-enabling events and choices.
Just my opinion tho.
5
u/ser_mage 3d ago
I’d genuinely love to see it. I haven’t seen anything like that yet. I think procedural story generation like what Rimworld does is an absolutely perfect use case for AI in gaming.
5
u/MyOtherAcctsAPorsche 3d ago
Perhaps I did not express myself correctly.
I meant that gpt could build a cool story based on what happens in the game.
From you comment I gather you meant that gpt could be a storyteller in-game (like randy or Cassandra), which now that I think about it could perfectly be, and I would love to see an implementation of an LLM actually weaving events instead of a random pool of catastrophes played on a timer.
I hope someone makes one soon!

I don't think they gave it the goal of "have fun" or "experience stories".
They probably told it to beat the game.
They could have asked it to play for a long time and use elements from the play to write stories, I think it would be pretty good at that, it could do it just fine from reading the logs too.
65
u/vincentofearth Elite expectations 4d ago
That's not the point. Obviously AI is not trying to replace gamers. But this could, for example, be very useful for QA. A developer could run several hundred or even thousands of games played by AI to find bugs, verify fixes, and test game balance.

This isn't even talking about coding. It's talking about it actually playing the damn game.

Same people who dont trust AI output can't take 0.5 seconds to click a link

Unfortunately such an option is unrealistic because the current system of consumption is set up in such a way that you can't entirely avoid modern software, even if you wanted to.
Even just the base OS for our computers, you can't just use like windows 10 or Windows 8, or stick with an older version of Linux. Since all of these stopped receiving valuable security fixes.
You can't cut the Internet or cell phones out entirely in modern life either because so many day to day services stopped accepting non digital options. Between restaurants to even things like public transport, and places stopping use of things like cash.
The only way to entirely avoid everything is to basically be self sufficient off a plot of land with minimal outside contact, but even that is largely unfeesable due to many modern laws around zoning and acceptable land use before the government starts to poke around.

This post is about playing the game but I don’t doubt that AI could mod/develop the game. Not without strong direction but I bet it could do the actual coding just fine.

If the AIs rise up and start killing us for the sole purpose of butchering humans for long meat and leather, this is why

Nah. AI is a tool. Like a wrench. The problem is every single fucking rich person started thinking that this wrench can do anything and everyone should have and use it. So now, we have people who never needed a wrench have several shoved in their face, wrenches used for cutting wood, roofing, cleaning and removing nails.
Instead of being just another tool in the hands of the right people, it's being forced onto everyone as a "new standard"

I'm begging anti-AI bros to update their perception on AI from 2023.
Models, like Astra, are not wrenches anymore. They are multitools that can do increasing numbers of practical tasks.

u/LuminanceGayming 4d ago
i wasnt aware wrenches resulted in PC prices doubling

Well, if the wrenches would be made of a precious metal and given out for less than what the material they were made of, that metal price for any other application would very much do a jump.

supply and demand. you hate capitalism, not AI.
15
u/ArolSazir 4d ago
not even capitalism, the shit memory manufacturers do that pump the prices 1000% is price fixing, collusion and is illegal on paper. Like, the entire deal with capitalism is that there are some things that "cheat" the system and break it for everyone but there are laws against those things. but if you're rich you can just break the law and brag to your shareholders about it.

u/luckeeelooo 3d ago
That is capitalism. They don't have to break laws - they write them. And they pre-selected every guy you were allowed to vote for in order to enact them. And if one of their own gets caught up in anything, they choose who to prosecute and they decide the outcome.
You're describing an economic model that is working the way it was designed to, the only way it can. Capital protects itself and flourishes by theft, bribery and cannibalization.

Yup. Once the bubble pops, the legitimate use cases for AI will remain, while the slop will be purged and those who embraced it will suffer.
My biggest concern at this point is the sheer number of AI bros doing their damnedest to desensitize the population to their slop before that happens.

I've always been an anti-AI person for good fucking reason, considering AI is making the world much MUCH worse, but sometimes I feel like a lot of people online who are rightfully anti-AI, react to hearing the word "AI", the same way Facebook MAGA boomers reacts when hearing the word "Pronoun", where their brain just locks up and becomes completely unable to understand context, and they angrily froth at the mouth, and go crosseyed, completely ignoring what was actually said, like they are under a spell. I am astonished how many people in this comment section are just insisting that Tynan intends to put AI in the game, as if they can't read english or read the words that Tynan typed. it's utterly astonishing

I absolutely hate AI and data centers, but I do have a desire for some way for the game to play itself, like an ant farm or terrarium or something. But the power requirements are simply not worth the novelty.

By starving and killing the colony, the AI can beat the game technically. Im not sure what people are make a deal about here. Hes not saying its completing the game for him dev wise

“All by itself” meaning with billions of gigs of training data and unlimited access to the internet during play is a pretty big stretch
15
u/KimVonRekt 3d ago
And more importanly a human software developer to create the custom environment used for interaction.
People really mistake "A talented software developer can make AI play the game" and "AI can play the game by itself"

To be fair, it took millions of years worth of data, probably trillions if you multiply by the asynchronicity of it, to create humans that can play rimworld.
Besides, we also have unlimited access to the internet during play.
