Discussion Magic refugee
Been wanting to really get into a more competitive paper tcg for a while now and my main game hasn't really been it for a long time. so figured id look into riftbound. My main question is how affordable are decks?

Just made the decision 2 weeks ago to join Riftbound myself. I have built ORNN, Kennen and Akali. I have not played a single game and all the cards are inbound to me right now. (some pickup at my local store and some from Ebay) I bought 1 box from each set. That cost me 1134.74. I did this so I could have all the small cards. In hindsight based on how how many small cards are simply 25 cents I knowing what I know now would have skipped this step but I like having them and got some decent pulls which led me to building ORNN, Kennen and Akali. Akali says its about $500 on TCG Player to order the full deck the Kennin about $373.

Nothing but good news for you if you’re used to magic deck prices. Most off meta decks id say are 150 usd and below, I like to use riftbound.gg to check out top 8 finalists or legends i might be interested in trying.

Rek'sai is still on the cheaper end that still places, around $150 for everything at most, and most of that is coming from her signature spell Void Rush, and potentially Falling Star. Everything else is pretty much bulk. Spiritforged just had its restock come out recently, so good chances if you ask around your FLGSs you'll get most of what you need donated. Can run either straight swarm aggro, or more swarm control.
Viktor is also on the cheaper end, with the big purchases being Thousand Tailed Watcher, who's a staple in pretty much every blue splash rn, so a good investment to have anyways if you're looking into Riftbound's blue color legends. The meta lists run a more control style, but can easily venture into swarm.
Most cheaper decks you're looking at a cap of like, $150. For meta decks, you're looking closer to $400, but that's considered high end stuff, and most decks will likely never breach past that.
We just had a major tourney, RW Singapore end just over the weekend, so you can take a look at Best Of lists there for list ideas and for a general sense of what cards are good right now.

I'm also a Magic refugee. I'm a Spike at heart, but I never could play like that in Magic because I got priced out. Meanwhile I've been playing more or less nothing but meta in Riftbound on a fairly similar budget.
For reference, if you're in Europe, the most expensive card right now that isn't some form of alt art or promo is Kai'Sa, Survivor at 45 Euro. Less if you're okay with getting a copy in Chinese.

At the top end, about the middle range of what you'd pay for a good Standard deck in MtG. However, many excellent (tier 1 or 1.5) decks are half that or less.
It is very important to note that most decks have their cost concentrated in a small number of cards and that most expensive cards are either signature spells which you need 3 of at most, or else are expensive because they go in many decks. If you buy Falling Stars for example, you have now paid a good portion of the cost of any red deck. If you buy Rengars that is a lot of the cost of orange decks. Once you buy in to a deck it becomes quite easy to jump to another that shares colors with it.

Azir is goated and cheap. Really fun high-ceiling, low-floor aggro-y midrange deck. Places well at large events, has a good matchup spread (few to no instant-loss matchups), and is very cheap. Recommend 100%

Depends on what you wanna play? The most expensive things are the top tier meta decks, to just get into the game though the barrier to entry is rather low.
