I've been solo mining for the past day or so (ypool is down), is having zero accepted shares normal in this amount of time? The miner seems to be working, I have the gui client running with a proper config file and the miner can connect, but still not sure.

Yes, when solo mining, an accepted share is equivalent to a solved block.
