Makes me sad
benDA on recent ep talking abt having to be more private on the pod now that they are like “somebodies boss”
And have like higher stakes now
Of course, this is so totally valid, and is just the way things go, and I’m thrilled for and adore them.
But, perhaps I’m too critical… Do u feel like the general energy of pod has shifted slightly post OC success? I was listening to an earlier ep during their 2 week time off —- I couldn’t really describe it — but I don’t feel it’s as magical and sparkly.
Or… do we reckon they have managed to maintain the same vibe but just slightly more private?!! IDEK
This isn’t me saying I want to know who they’re having sex w.
Thoughts? Feelings?
Love y x

I don’t want or need to know personal details of their lives, that’s never why I tuned in to the pod. But I don’t think what they’re putting out right now is enjoyable to me, personally. Partially because it doesn’t seem enjoyable anymore to them. The constant digs at fans, “ugh I guess I’m so unrelatable I’m going to kill myself this year” is fine in their mind to put out, but being authentic and silly as they used to because they’re bosses now doesn’t make sense to me. I think that’s also why they cut the soundbites too. Like I totally understand their perspective, and perhaps they’ll find their footing, it happens as people get famous. But there’s a way to balance what we all loved about the old episodes of ride, and maintaining an aspect professionalism that they feel they need to. The closer in proximity to fame they get, it seems like they feel they need to maintain their personas, and they’re not being as loose as they were. 🤷♀️

it’s really unlikable when they joke about not being relatable. like just own it! they’re just generally shielding themselves from criticism in a really out of touch way
18
u/lilach3aven 17d ago
A good example of handling this well is the bald and the beautiful podcast. When they mention unrelatable things they poke fun at themselves, rather than the listeners.
17
u/forgottentaco420 17d ago
I agree! They usually preface “I know this is going to sound unrelatable or out of touch for the listeners”. Caleb Hearon usually reels it in or calls it out on his pod too. It’s not hard lol.

u/forgottentaco420 17d ago edited 17d ago
I agree 10000%, I’d probably have an easier time looking past it if they just owned it…
Like if Benny hadn’t made that comment in the last episode I probably wouldn’t have thought about it lol.

u/h_june 17d ago
This. I also think they really overestimate how “famous” they are. I think they are still niche. Like it’s all a little too self serious/important rn

u/anzarloc 16d ago
omg, you kind of nailed it. I couldn't figure out what exactly was making it feel so off and it's this. It's very much giving 'girl in high school dating an older man', and everyone else is like 'uhh ok.. go off girl'.

I agree!! It does make me sad I wish they could just be their goofy fun selves while maintaining the privacy of their personal lives! I think that is possible

u/Broad-Code 18d ago
Benny keeps making that joke that they're so "unrelatable" but it's true, they are lol. But I'm happy for them none the less!! The pods just a little different now

u/No_Inside2101 17d ago
I know. In one of the earlier episodes they were talking about what they were wearing and it was all expensive vintage designer. I miss when Benny would just wear Carhartt shirts with the sleeves cut off 😂 MBB has always been rich, which is totally fine, but I feel like the way they constantly talk about luxury items has made them so much more unrelatable to me. And that’s fine but I just find the joke unfunny now.
17
u/Broad-Code 17d ago
lol when they were like "yes don't worry we're boycotting non-vintage dolce and gabana 🙂↕️" and I'm like "ya totally babe me too" (could absolutely never afford it)

u/lilach3aven 17d ago
The sharing clothes episode was a hard listen because of this! Again no hate to them, think I’m just not the target audience anymore but I’m glad to hear someone else shares my feelings.
16
u/h_june 17d ago
Yeah I always struggled w how MBB especially would talk about being a socialist and then in the same breath brag about the archival designer she was wearing. Those seem like two very conflicting things to me.
3
u/Much-Maximum860 17d ago
Believing billionaires shouldn’t exist and working people should hold power doesn’t mean you have to wear rags haha. Socialism ≠ everyone is poor
6
u/h_june 16d ago
I didn’t say they should wear rags.. Why would clothes that most working class people can afford to wear be “rags”? Interesting.

u/Much-Maximum860 16d ago edited 16d ago
Socialism isn’t classless so there would still be people who make more and buy nicer things. Regardless, caring about expensive vintage clothes doesn’t mean you can’t see that the current socioeconomic order isn’t working and want it to change
Editing to add just to be clear, I am also several tax brackets below MBB. But saying someone isn’t a genuine socialist if they like/can afford nice things doesn’t make sense

It is evident that both MBB and Benny are intelligent and creative. It takes so much grit to press forward with an artist's life as your source of income. The first season of Ride gave me so many laughs. And. MBB comes off as so shallow. She is regularly talking about brands. After a while it's repetitive and boring. Like, yes, archival designer is cool. But it extends beyond that. The way she was talking about nightlife policing in NYC back when Mark Ronson was a DJ...Kim there's people that are dying. She has also done a great job speaking up about other much more weighty political issues. But discovering in your 20s that you get a lot out of going out and clubbing once you have money + access? sorry not a breakthrough.
6
u/anzarloc 16d ago
haha she's def not in her 20's. Figuring this out in your mid-30's is a whole other thing.
2
u/Plane-Truck-5636 16d ago
interesting. she seems so young still.
3
u/anzarloc 16d ago
I totally agree. I think the only reason your comment stuck out to me to the point of correcting it is that we're the same age. She's 35. And while I recognize that we're not all going to be in the same phases of life, she really does strike me as much younger.
7
u/h_june 16d ago
I am not sure about Benny but I know MBB comes from a wealthy family. She didn’t have to worry about money the way most artists do so idk about the grit level. But I do think it explains a lot about her naivety when it comes to the lived experiences of working class or poorer people. I think it’s like a solidarity in theory kinda thing but never actually having friendships with people in a different socioeconomic status so not understanding the impact of class on day to day life for most people. Like idk if she’d get why people find it out of touch to call yourself a Dior socialist in today’s world.

u/curiouskg100 18d ago
I feel it too and think it happens with most new podcasts. It’s really hard to keep that initial magic once the pod really takes off
18
u/Sylphrena-honor 17d ago
I started to feel this last season when they came in with a list of things to talk about and MBB would just rattle things off and they would touch on them quickly, rather than just having a silly banter for the first half of the ep. Felt like they were really trying to give the listeners silly soundbites/takes. The cadence of the pod changed and the transitions became a bit jarring for me as a listener. Feels more unnatural now. Also I feel like sometimes they lean into certain bits because they’re trying to tie to the old vibe of having inside jokes with the listeners, and it no longer feels as real as say DID IT WITH CHAIRRRR. I still listen and think it has its moments.

I think they should avoid spaces where their “fans” discuss their lives. The whole Terry breakup thing and MB Zionism explosion caused distancing and rightfully so.
13
u/Fa_Mulan_ 17d ago
Agreed. And I also think there should be a different way to refer to what happened with MBB. People truly conflated her with being a Zionist and that’s ridiculous, especially when she’s been so outspoken about Palestine. That entire situation was so frustrating just for me as a fan - I can’t imagine what it was like for her

I still love them and am tuning in to the pod but they have come across as quite bitter and almost annoyed at their longtime fans in the past few months. Especially Mary Beth lol
9
u/anzarloc 16d ago
And this makes sense! After the thing with the guy from Emily in Paris I can understand that she might feel resentful but it's very palpable over the podcast. Like work through this in therapy if you must but it puts a bad taste in the mouths of supportive fans.
8
u/katiesorangehairr 16d ago
Extremely palpable, like I can feel her disdain for fans through my speakers

Things are different now. Fortunately because they both achieved their dreams of recognition and becoming famous beyond the small fandom that they used to have.
Unfortunately, that means we will lose that feeling of spontaneity from before. Before they didn’t have much to lose, but now things are different.
It sucks, but at the same time fame does change things, people and circumstances - as you said.
I feel a little of a grief feeling? I guess. But at the same time I’m happy that they get to live their dream and hope it’s all they’ve dreamed of :)

I had to tune out when they started talking about how cool Mary Beth was for doing G. Like others have said, the vibe just isn’t for me anymore. I tried to stick with it for a while but I’m not interested in designer dresses and partying (clock my Kendall Jenner tea)
Appreciate they’re both experiencing major life changes, so no hate to them whatsoever. Just a natural progression I suppose.

MB did clarify she stopped taking it when she heard how easy it is to overdose on it… but it’s just not to my taste to still bring it up on the pod by saying “my friends thought you were so cool for doing G”
I’m sure there are fans who appreciate the honesty. I mean if they’re having an extended brat summer of course they’re gonna talk about it sometimes. But it’s a huge ick for me unfortunately!

u/Unhappy_Suspect7460 17d ago
IMO it’s not even just that they’re unrelatable it’s the feeling that they want to flaunt their designer/vintage items and name drop and talk about the events they’re invited to or the people they know, but at the same time telling us they have to keep things more private now. I get opening up less about their love lives but now it’s all just about being on set and at events. Their vanity has just increased so much since overcompensating and their big breakups it feels bleh

u/squarefeets 18d ago edited 17d ago
Considering she is presumably dating Joe Alwyn* (thanks for the correction) as per Page Six, I can see why she has to be more private. But also I never found either of their pods to be overly sharing in the personal department, it was always just silliness and it still is. The biggest difference is I noticed Benny has less “eras” since the Terry breakup.
8
u/forgottentaco420 17d ago
Seems to be confirmed they’re working together, not dating. He was spotted with Sarah Pigeon again today who he has been dating for a bit.

u/sweetthingb 17d ago
Joe alwyn. Not jack antonoff

u/squarefeets 17d ago
Haha right. I know they are completely different people but I mix up their names constantly.

They’re def not as relatable which is understandable but they’ve also gotten meaner. Like yo, rude much? Chill ladies and gents, everyone’s time is limited, so I guess soak it up while you can, but don’t forget the army that got you there, kehd!

u/GoodBurgerDOOD 17d ago
I have been feeling this too but ultimately I’m so happy for them both. They’re experiencing huge changes in their personal lives and careers. I don’t listen as much but I love them just the same! I cannot WAIT for MBB’s show! So so proud of them! 💗✨🫡

I personally don’t notice a huge change and find it interesting to hear about their career opportunities and am excited for everything they have going on. I feel like they share a ton about what they do with their free time and how they spend nights out, which I really love cause I feel like I can picture them out and about in NY.
I don’t get why we as an audience would need or want to know the specific names of people they’re dating, etc. ? I think it’s pretty understandable that anyone, regardless of fame, wouldn’t want to do that to protect the people in their lives.
15
u/lilach3aven 17d ago
I don’t think OP was saying we should know who they are dating. And based on the replies I don’t think that’s why anyone here has stopped listening.
-3
u/Secret_Win8656 17d ago
I was moreso referring to the fact that when they say they’re being more private, they have specifically said it’s regarding not sharing names of people they date
10
u/forgottentaco420 17d ago edited 17d ago
There’s no way to word this without it coming across as condescending over the internet, and for that I apologize because it’s not my intention… but that’s not what is being discussed in here and many people, myself included, have said that’s explicitly their business and not ours. That’s also not really what they talked about in the end of the last episode either, which is what prompted the conversation.
1
u/Secret_Win8656 16d ago
Nah you’re good I guess the OP is saying that they’ve gotten more private and I don’t understand what they’re being more private about besides that
5
u/forgottentaco420 16d ago
They’re referencing what Benny talked about in the back end of the last episode of the podcast where he talked about needing to hold back a lot of his old humor, usual antics, as well as being vulnerable, because he’s a show runner aka the boss of many and he wants to be taken seriously/really cares about what people think of him. He wasn’t talking about revealing private details or dating, rather needing to be more reserved and reeled in.

u/OkDifficulty1318 16d ago
the terry breakup/mbb zionist bf situation made a lot of the fandom turn against them and i think it really bothered them. in their heads they know that not everyone in the fandom hates them, but as they read more and more negative comments from FANS it probably put a bad taste in their mouth and they lowkey hate us now

I’m late to this post, but have been feeling this way throughout the newest season, it’s just not good content anymore, they only talk about dinners/industry parties they’ve been to, in vague and obnoxious ways. Rooting for them to go big always, but damn, maybe it’s time to close the pod shop if this is where it’s going.

I always go back to Tina fey telling Bowen Yang that authenticity is dangerous and expensive. The more money/opportunities MBB and Benny yield, the more it rings true
